DL to Hollywood--locals, what's the best route?

Going from DL to Hollywood--could someone who is a local post the best way to go? I've tried by taking the Hollywood freeway (I think) which on the map looks like the best way but it was beyond a nightmare! After almost 2 hours (!) I bailed out and found my way on surface streets.

Specifically, I want to go up to Hollywood Blvd. to the El Capitan theater. I'm pretty familiar with driving in the area including the main surface streets.

I think you'll find surface streets even more of a nightmare than the freeway. However, there are two routes:

Northern route:
Harbor Blvd. North to Whittier Blvd.
Turn Left.
Whittier Blvd. becomes 6th St in downtown Los Angeles
6th Street through downtown - becomes Wilshire Blvd at the 110 freeway.
Wilshire Blvd. to Highland Ave. Turn left (north) and the El Cap is on the corner of Highland and Hollywood.

Southern route:
Harbor Blvd north to Lincoln Ave.
Turn left.
At the 605 freeway Lincoln Ave turns into Carson St.
Carson St takes a right bend (to the north) and becomes Long Beach Blvd.
Long Beach Blvd. then turns left (west) and becomes Vernon Ave.
Vernon Ave to Western Ave.
Turn right (north)
Western Ave. to Hollywood Blvd.
Turn left.
The El Cap is on the corner of Highland and Hollywood.

- Metrolink train from Anaheim Station (next to Angel Stadium, i.e. east on Katella from the DL area).
- Exit the train at the end of the line - LA's Union Station
- Follow the signs to the MTA Red Line subway, which also stops at Union Station.
- Exit the Red Line at the Hollywood/Highland station.

The Metrolink fare includes the Red Line fare. I took Metrolink to a downtown meeting a few weeks ago and the cost was $13 for the round trip. Might be less than gas & parking depending on how many people you have.

I went to the 7th Street station - Hollywood/Highland is beyond that on the same line. Hard to remember how long it took (maybe an hour or so), but I know it was worth the money for me to take the train vs driving solo in rush hour. Your mileage may vary.
