dl space mtn vs wdw space mtn

DL Space Mountain is just pure fun! Smooth as ice. It has a big jerk when it stops at the end, but that's it. Matterhorn is pure torture. There's really no excuse for the poor design of the sleds. Imagine you lay down on a railroad track and then someone grabs you by your feet and drags you for 4 minutes.

We're WDW vets who recently returned from our first DLR trip. I had read it here and asked a CM who supported this theory re matterhorn: the left side, near Tomorrowland, is jerker and slower; the right side, near fantasyland, is smoother and faster. We tried both and I agree. I was surprised how much I liked the ride on the fantasyland side. I'll admit that I hate WDW's Space Mt so much (scary and feels insecure) that I didn't ride it at DLR, but DBF did and he said he didn't think it was that much different :confused3

WDW SM and the Matterhorn ate very similar.

Yes the Matterhorn was way better when you could fit two people in the same seat.

One plus for the Matterhorn is that you can see where you are going and brace yourself while on SM WDW it is very dark and your on your own.

Wow, I just find it crazy that the WDW version doesn't have music! I agree that music adds SO MUCH to the ride, I find that really strange.
Also, random trivia, Michael Giacchino composed the music for DL SM! (he did most Pixar movies, like Up, and The Incredibles, and basically all the good music, as well as the TV show Lost!) He's one of my favorite composers!
I didn't know that. Interesting. I always thought Surfin with the Alien by Joe Satriani would be a good fit for Space Mountain. I think WDW should jump on that since they are in need of some sort of music.

I guess I didn't even notice the drop in SM in WDW since I was so busy thinking about how jarring it was.

DL's SM is extraordinarily smooth, darker, faster, and with significantly more and better star effects than MK's SM. (Though I still really like MK's SM, too.) I used to peg MK's SM as more painful than DL's Matterhorn. But ever since the new bobsleds and new wheel material, I think Matterhorn is much more painful than MK's SM. The new bobsleds hurt your lower back, and the new wheels make the ride bumpy all the way through. At least MK's SM gives you a break--it isn't painful from beginning to end like Matterhorn is now.

Also, please can we just kill the myth now? Matterhorn and MK's SM are not identical. Their layouts are totally different. They just share a similar, jerky ride system. Matterhorn is far more intertwined than MK's SM is.

Just ride the two attractions thus far mentioned and was pleasantly surprised by Space Mountain. Apparently the WDW SM completely traumatized me and I refused to go. But it was smooth and a lot of fun, particularly set up as Ghost Galaxy.

Matterhorn on the other hand......my last time for sure. I could feel my brain rattling in my skull!

DW Space Mtn is jerkier, but I guess I am one of the few who like it so much better than DLs version. DLs just goes in circles with one tiny drop. I like how DW has more little drops that give you that 0 gravity feel (my favorite, hence my love of ToT. I get tired of just going in circles in DL, even if it is smoother.

That said, I have always found the Matterhorn to be extremly jerky. Far more so than DW SM. If it is worse now with the new vehicles, I'm not looking forward to it. I will try the Fantasyland side, and hope its better. But I'm sure I will try the other side too. It's a classic and I have to ride both sides to have the full experience. :thumbsup2

We just rode WDW's Space Mountain on Sunday. It is pretty jerky. DL's version is much smoother. The Matterhorn is much jerkier than WDW's Space Mountain though. WDW's Space Mountain is a bit too jerky for my taste, but it doesn't hurt. Matterhorn hurts! We rode WDW's SM more than once during our WDW trip last week. Last summer, we all rode the Matterhorn once and all said never again (and 3 years from now- we will probably feel nostalgic and do it again- and then we will say never again once again. ;))!

I also find the right side on WDW's mountain a lot smoother than the left. The left was very rough and not at all fun! DLR was fantastic, I loved it and would have loved to ride it more than once, but it was down for almost two days when we were there. We had a fastpass for Friday and didn't get to ride it until Sunday!! At least they honored it.

I also wish WDW would do the Ghost Galaxy theme like DLR does! that was very cool! :thumbsup2
