So we're going to DL at the end of August and I've seen a couple of threads on the DL forums that mention new terms that I am unfamiliar with from the Genie+ system at WDW. Terms like "fishing" and "accelerating". Doesn't the Genie+ system work the same as in FL or is it a completely new animal that I need to research and study up on in order to use it successfully?! If it functions differently where's the best place to get schooled on it?! I want to know what's different. TIA!

The systems work very similarly, but there's a few key distinctions.

1. You can not start making reservations until you scan into a park.
2. There are far more rides in the two parks at DLR compared to each park at WDW (except Magic Kingdom), meaning there is far better availability for LL.
3. The demographics of DLR are very different than WDW, being more local centric so fewer people per day pay extra for Genie+.
4. If you have parkhoppers, you can book rides in either park after 11:00 each day.

Overall, the system works far better at DLR because of these reasons, making it so you can accomplish a lot per day with Genie+.

You mentioned some other things that can further enhance your experience if you take the time to learn them.

Instead of starting a new thread, I encourage you to read the sticky Genie+ thread for DLR and the other main thread. All the info you need is there, plus maybe a couple of YouTube videos.

I am by no means an expert, but this is what I've gathered from reading about it previously:

People fish for MultiExperience Passes (MEP's) by booking genie+ for rides that are down (and they hope stay down during their return period) or for rides that commonly are down at park opening (Indian Jones for Instance) or that break down often.
MEP's are more valuable at Disneyland because of how many attractions there are in each park and also how many non genie+ rides there are (which you can then use them on).
Accelerating is taking one of those MEP's and using it for a ride you already have a return time booked for further out (maybe an hour or 2 out). You use the MEP, accelerating your ability to ride that ride, and then you can modify that booking to something else, without restarting your 2 hour clock to make your next booking.

Thank you so much for a clear explanation of what accelerating is! I’m just not completely clear in something…

“You use the MEP, accelerating your ability to ride that ride, and then you can modify that booking to something else, without restarting your 2 hour clock to make your next booking.”

When you say you can modify “that booking”…are you referring to the MEP or the later LL booking?

To make sure I’m completely understanding this: is it that there’s just a glitch in the system that if you have both an MEP & regular LL reservation for a ride, the system uses the LL when you tap in for some reason and you retain the MEP? Is that correct? If so, how do you retain the MEP if you are using it for a non-Genie+ ride (which you said above they can be used for)?

I think what they mean is that if you have a MEP you’re able to accelerate the return time of a LL reservation you also carry. If it’s 11am and you have a LL for Space Mountain at 3pm, you can ride it early simply by hold both the MEP and the LL for Space (ie. you don’t have to wait for your return time). So you’d head over to Space anytime you want, 11:30am for example, and when you scan your ticket at Space, it uses the LL reservation and not your MEP, this is called “accelerating”. This also allows you to book another LL reservation at another ride much earlier than you would otherwise. You can do this over and over at both parks, as long as you hold a Gold MEP.

You cannot modify the booking. Modifying has a specific meaning when it comes to Genie+. An MEP cannot be modified and you will use up the LL when you tap in to the LL line. You cannot modify a LL after it has been used. However, if it was your most-recently-booked LL, you can immediately book another. You just tapped in to that LL. The 2-hour rule does not apply when you have tapped in to your most-recently-booked LL. The PP had the general idea right (you're not subject to the 2-hour rule), but used the wrong terminology.

If you use your MEP on a non-Genie+ ride, or use it on a Genie+ ride for which you do not have a LL reservation, that will use up your MEP and end your ability to accelerate. To maximize your use of the acceleration feature, use it for only rides that you have LLs for. When you run out of rides that you have LLs for and want to ride, you can then use your MEP for an eligible non-Genie+ ride or a re-ride of the eligible Genie+ ride of your choice. That will be your last benefit from the MEP.

Be sure to understand the differences between Gold Tier and Silver Tier MEPs. That can mess you up if you’re not careful.

Another thing I learned recently is that if you get an MEP late in the day, it’s good through the following day so keep fishing all the way up until closing time.

Back in MaxPass days it needed to be in the last hour of park operations for a MEP to carry over to the near day. Do you know if that’s still the case?

We were last there in July and got one due to Matterhorn going down (I want to say our return time was between 630-730), but it expired at the end of the night. Maybe things have changed since then...we will be back in a week to find out.
