We're planning to head back to Disneyland for 2 days, Sept 7-8. I haven't been keeping up on all the latest Disney news so just a couple quick questions:

1) Is there anything major happening around that weekend that will make it extra crowded or just the usual weekend crowds?
2) Is there an advantage to staying on property in a Disney hotel for the sake of Galaxy Edge or was that only when the land first opened?

No advantage on hotel stays, GE is and will be open to all unless Rise of the Resistance comes out and they change things up, but we don’t know.

Halloween time should start around that time and that attracts more crowds.

HalloweenTime is slated to start on Friday, September 6. So the 7th and 8th will be the first weekend of the new "season", so there will likely be crowds as guests go to the parks to see the overlays, seasonal entertainment, etc.
