Dixie Landing name change

I know I am probably way late on this finding but why wasd Dixie Landings change to Port Orleans French Quarter. Not that it means much but just a thought.

Dixie Landings in now Port Orleans Riverside. Sister resort to Port Orleans French Quarter.

We stayed at French Quarter in Sept. 2000. When we went again in May 2001 we were told that they had changed Dixie Landing to Riverside in March 2001

We didn't like the name change. It will always still be Dixie Landings to us.

I had heard 2 reasons, one was that "Dixie Landings" was not politically correct. The other reason was that they wanted to operate both resorts as one, so they changed the names to make them more like 2 branches of the same resort.

Port Orleans Riverside just doesn't have the same "ring" to it!
Especially if you stayed there when it WAS Dixie Landings!

My guess is that they were trying to be "PC". They had no reason to change the name to operate the 2 resorts as one entity. They coul have combined all the services etc and kept the names PO and DL.

"Dixie" never meant anything to me but I grew up in New Jersey. If the word had negative connotations for some, I guess they felt they should change it. I also, however, continue to think of it as "Dixie Landings" as it is one of my faves and that is what it was always called.

I found a soap recently that said "Polynesian Village Resort." They have long since dropped the word "Village." Hubby remembers saying at "The Golf Resort," now Shades of Green. And imagine that when WDW opened, "The Contemporary" actually DID look contemporary! Times change!

I didn't mean to say they had to change the name to operate the 2 resorts as one entity. But, some of the stuff that came out in Disney newsletters implied that they wanted to "connect" the names more in people's minds, so that it was one resort with 2 locations.
We stayed at both before they changed the names and they will always be what they were originally called to us. A bit before the names were changed, there was some stuff in the news about some Southern States still wanting to fly the Conferate flag. It was around that time that they changed, so (Disney, being Disney), they probably wanted to avoid any controvercy. (For people not in the US, "Dixie" is the name of a song that was a Conferate marching song during the American Civil War.)

We stayed @ Dixie Landings in 1999, I still refer to it as that.

actually i remember reading about it but it was years ago - that name change was for PC reasons - i think they recieved communication from some activist type organizations that they were not happy with the name because of it's connection to the civil war and slavery and rather than fight a messy PC battle in the press they simply changed the name..

That was rumor discussed on Internet Forums, nothing official from Disney.

I was staying at DL during the name change. I got lots of liquidated DL merchandise that week! I liked the old name too but I never knew about the negative connotations it had.

We will be staying at my Dixie Landings soon. I still have a planning video that shows Dixie Landings & we watch it every now & then.

I guess I should change my screen name before an activist group against Santa Clause has a PC coniption fit.
