Disturbing sight on Castaway Cay

Just wait until you take the braids out! My daughter lost a BUNCH of hair!

I did some reading on this, and what I found out, is that you really aren't losing any "extra" hair. It is just the normal amount you would shed everyday while brushing, etc. When it is in the tight braids for so long, it doesn't have a chance to shed normally, so when it does, it looks like an awful lot!

Ok........ I just had my DD13 read these posts and it changed her mind (thank goodness).

We will NOT be doing the corn rows.

Great feedback everyone.

Hair braiding = child abuse

I bet mom was thinking..."I paid for this and you're getting them"

Why would anyone want corn rows anyway? They certainly aren't very flattering.

Poor kid, her lasting memory of CC will be clouded by that incident :(

Hair braiding doesn't equal child abuse.

I just wanted to make a few suggestions: I always took my daughter to the local Beauty School to get her hair braided. The last time I took her it cost $15 vs. $75 at the hair salon. Plus if after a few days she doesn't like them it's okay.

Also when removing them snip the rubberband and then start from the sides up removing the braids.

For those who don't like the look, I really do and they are so pratical for a disney trip or cruise for a child with a lot of hair. Or you can always do like we did last year this time my daughters hair was almost to her elbows now it is so short she gets mistaken for a boy.

My daughter and I had the hair brading done on CC in March..let's just say..we will never do it again. My daughter is 21..she said, it isn't suppose to be this way. It was so tight...we couldn't even get them out. Hubby had to do it..about an hour after we returned to the ship.

I do not recommend hair brading for a young child!

I believe this is called child abuse in any normal person's mind.

I don't agree that hair braiding automatically equals child abuse. It does not hurt every child that has it done. My DD had it done last month and it did not hurt at all. While some of you are of the opinion that it looks ugly, I am of the opinion that the half head corn rows look adorable. JMO.

Well I might be in the minority but my DS6 is not getting any corn rows. and neither am I. LOL - Interesting thread though. I always wondered how you cleaned your hair with these things in them? - Mike

We men are soooooo glad that we are naturally good looking and don't have to go through this!

My daughter cried too. But she was doing good until my mom said something (that she looked sad) then I said something and she started crying. I asked her if she wanted to stop and she said no. Our braider was sympathetic and she did say she was sorry it was hurting and not much longer.

I really didn't think about it at first about how much it would hurt. :(

Wow! I have had my hair braided in Turks and Caicos and Mexico but not my whole head. It took all of 10 minutes and did not hurt at all. I have really sensitive skin too so if it hurt I would have told them to stop:) Sounds like they are doing it way to tight. I think after a few days it looks awful. My hair gets frizzy from the salt water and it does not look neat at all. The braids are also so hard to take out.

Yes, there are hair braiders on the ship. I saw them on Deck 9. I am not sure how to go about getting an appointment, and I think the prices are higher than what you would pay on the islands.

We had a woman walk by us in St. Maarten and offer to do our kids' hair. I refused. DD has a very sensitive scalp and I know she would have hated it.

I just said "no thanks" to the hair braiders on the island. If they pressed I told them that DD's (4) hair and mine was prone to breakage. I don't really know that our hair would break, it is just a fear of mine :p . Plus, I didn't want to worry about sunburned scalps.

Im not sure that the girls who do the hair braiding on CC are all Disney CM's? Certainly they dont have "FULL TIME" crew just on board for this purpose. Maybe they are brought in from the local islands, as is the Post Office staff.

We saw a WHOLE family of 10 on our cruise who had all their hair braided (man included) Goodness knows how much they paid, but as a whole group, they looked awful: - like aliens! Many children have their hair braided at CC, then find that they have to have them taken out 3 days later, as some schools will not allow braids. Of course, some girls look very cute - but just a few braids is all it takes to get that "Caribbean" look. Nat:Pinkbounc

Reading this thread makes me thankful that God blessed us with a DS and not a DD so that I don't have to deal with hair braiding. Agree with all who comment on how bad a look it is--'cept for Bo Derek 25 years ago in "10". Disagree that it is a bad look? Find a photo online of actress Juliet Lewis the year she showed up for the Oscars with her hair braided. Eeeekk!!

As a parent, I imagine that the mother indeed was thinking "you wanted this, you begged for it, I paid for it, now you're getting this".

Actually one of the subtle niceties about CC is the ability to sit on a beach and relax without persistent solicitations for hair braiding, as happens on St. Maarten (but I love St. Maarten and can put up with the annoyance).

Perhaps the crying child will remember the event when she gets a bit older and starts thinking about a tottoo or some non-traditional body piercing...

One time I was that Bad mother- it wasn't about hair braiding, though.
DD (just turned 5 at the time) and I were in line for the Buzz Lightyear ride and 2 boys infront of us were talking about another ride (Dinosaur, I think) DD overheard them saying the Dinosaurs jump out and try to eat you, they have slimy drool, hanging from their teeth... etc.. Well DD was convinced they were talking about the Buzz ride. She did not want to go on it and get eaten by Dinosaurs, I told her that is a different ride- this ride isn't scary... she didn't believe me. Just as we were about to board the ride ride she freaked out , screaming "NO, NO I don't want to go, It's scary..." I knew she would love it and I made a snap decision to make her get on the ride. People probably thought I was insane. (I normally would have just said fine, if it scares you we won't do it but the idea of squishing our way backwards through the masses of waiting people was not something I wanted to do and I just picked her up and put her on the ride.)
Anyway about 30 seconds into the ride she decided it was great and went on it 3 more times consecutively.
She is 8 now and loves that ride and the story about how I made her get on.

Cheapmom-I'm also a mean mommy that forced my crying child onto the Pooh ride, the buzz ride and Goofy's Barnstormer once. Now he loves them all but he was afraid of these rides for some reason that trip even though he had ridden them before.

I don't care for corn rows and would never let anyone do that to my hair.
