We have stayed mostly at the Contemporary during our Disney visits. We are considering the Grand Floridian this year. One thing we liked about the tower at the CR was the close proximity to elevators, monorail and even the buses weren't bad. How about at the GF? Which rooms are closest to these things. Are there any rooms that are really far? (We stayed at Port Orleans our first trip and were disappointed at the distance from the room to the buses).

I stayed in Sago Cay lodge building at GF. It was right across from Gasparilla Grill, which is the GF's counter service restaurant. It was a two minute walk to the courtyard pool and a three to four minute walk to the Monorail, beach pool, and boat launch.

The Grand Floridian is not a big resort. I was there earlier this month and timed the walk from the Monorail to the boat launch (which is further away than any room would be) and it took me 7 minutes. A note about my timing: I did not have a stroller, cranky kids, etc. but I am just shy of 5' tall and do not walk very fast.

Building 5/ Sago Cay is close to the main building and to the bus tansportation. A little further from the pools and the boat launch.

Have a great time and eat at Narcoossees if you can. I love that restaurant!

We must walk at about the same pace, because this is exactly the same time I noted. I'll add that I wasn't with small children either, but it was a fairly leisurely pace and nothing rushed.

If you don't have a tight budget, the closest rooms to everything are the concierge rooms in the main building. You're an elevator ride away from the monorail and bus stop, but you will pay for that location. Still concierge, but a little less expensive and close to the main building, is Sugar Loaf. In terms of which standard lodge is closest to everything, Big Pine Key is another good option. It's convenient to both pools, the beach and the main building. Personally, I do like Sago Cay simply because it's in a quieter location and I like the little path beside the building that leads right to the bus stop.

A couple of links you might find useful. The first is the resort layout, http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/grandfmap.jpg . The second is a satellite view, which really helps figure out the distance (and shows that none of the buildings is more than a few minutes walk away).
