Hello, I am currently finishing my 2nd year at uni doing Media, Communication and Cultural Studies and have to come up with a dissertation proposal by friday.

I have been wanting to write about Disney representations of women, minorities and/or the idea of love/materialism since first year but now that it's here I am struggling to find a topic that is focused enough to get results but broad enough so that I can find 10,000 words on it.

I have thought about looking at the difference in representations before and after the Disney Renaissance, so the original films such as Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty compared to the more recent films like the Princess and the Frog Tangled, Brave and Frozen.

This might be difficult though so I am looking for any ideas if you can to lead me down the right path.

Thanks so much, any thoughts are welcome!

:rolleyes2

I think your idea is very good. I am currently streaming a video with older characters in it. What about the strength of women depicted, just in general vs the compare/contrast.

Minnie, Daisy--both have their dependency on their partners, but they are very strong in their own and have been known to take matters into their hands. Duchess (Aristocats), Lady and Nala, Miss Bianca (well, she didn't leave him) were each willing to leave the male behind in order to stay true to their values.

Now, trying to show animals as minorities could be out there, so in that case my idea wouldn't work. But there is a different point to be made in which so many were of the high society and then they introduced more humble living. Oliver, Trixie (Lady & the Tramp), Esmeralda (Hunchback)...

:confused3 I have probably made more of a mess than been helpful. All I know for sure, if it's not coming together...Relax and begin again from a different angle.
