I have a question about the $1 ponchos you get at the discount store.
How many do you bring on your trip?
They seem rather thin.
Are they for one-time use only?
My trip is in May.
Any thoughts on how many I should purchase?

We're going in August, when it rains a LOT.

So I'm bringing at least 2 sets, maybe more.

But I'm interested in hearing what the pros say.

We brought only one set, and when we went in August last year we used them DAILY...each nite when we got back to the resort we would hang them in the tub to dry. The kids' got really raggedy by the end of the week, lots of holes in them, so i would bring 2-3 for each kid this time, and maybe 2 for DH and I, they tear pretty easily, but at $1 each, they are a great deal!

I get mine at Target for 89 cents. I buy about 3 for each person. We toss them out when we're done and the ones we don't used, I return after our trip.

We've used the cheap dollar stores ones and reused them a few times. Yes, they are totally thin, but as long as your careful, they should last. We threw ours out at the end of the trip-they served their purpose. I actually like the cheap ones better because depending on the time of year yoiu travel to Disney, the more expensive ones can be a little heavy and hotter to wear. I'd probably bring a 2nd set with you just in case you have any mishaps with the initial set. Chances are that it won't rain every day anyway. Have fun!

Couldn't you just buy a slightly more expensive one that would last your whole trip and not throw them away after one use and clog up all the landfills with more and more plastic?

I totally understand what you mean about going green. I want to buy the rain ponchos because they are lighter and easier to tote around. I would not throw it away just because it is disposable. I will use them until they fall apart. For .87 cents it's a good buy, but I would definately use it with great care, because I sure don't want to purchase 21 ponchos for a seven-day trip for my girls and I.

But I do thank you for reminding us to be environmentally friendly. Our logo is a "Green" Mickey head. That should remind us all the time!:thumbsup2

The Disney ponchos sure are hotter than the cheapies. Two sets for my girls and I should be enough.

It sure does rain alot in August. I was there last August and we got a few showers.

Two sets seems like a go. I am not bringing the baby on this next trip, so the ponchos should be OK for the rest of the gang.

I used the disposable rain ponchos on my last trip.
They all tore before the rain stopped.
They're too fragile.
This trip I am bringing real rain ponchos.

We bought 2 sets per person and I thought they held up very good
because we used them several times (it rained almost everyday in Sept.)
We also used them to ride the Kali Rapids ride and we were the only ones
not soaked to the skin--(which is not good in High Heat and Humitity).
Bring a small grocery store bag to put them in after wearing--make sure you shake them out as best that you can then roll them up to store in the bag.
We've learned from previous trips that the heavier ponchos are very hot--there like you own mini
steam room under there so that is why I won't where the heavy ones.

Maybe in our haste to open the ponchos we tore them.....
The rain came out of no where!!!!
We got wet....that's why I vowed to never use them again.

But they are lightweight....and take up very little space in our backpack.
Not sure if I'll go that route again....but every extra ounce adds up when touring.

Yes, the heavier ponchos are like being in a sauna. :faint: We have both and prefer the cheapo ponchos because of this.

Hmm, not sure why our experience seems different than most. We've only ever bought the cheapo ponchos before the trips (each under $1) and we've only brought one per person and used it the entire trip. They've lasted us just fine (including one as a stroller cover). We usually go in Jan/Feb so there might be no rain or all rain.

I usually bring about 3 ponchos per person for a 10 or 11 day trip.

We throw them out after each use...no way are we saving/carrying around wet ponchos with us.

I think that's where I went wrong. I only brought two ponchos for each person for the entire trip. They did not last more than one use. Maybe they're only meant for one use.

I cringe at having to carry around six heavy duty ponchos.

They are. I have 2 different kinds right now packed away in my "Disney bin". Both state on the front "Disposable Emergency Poncho". At least they're not expensive.

We went through 2 complete sets (plus one for the stroller) in our 6 day trip. We hit drizzley rains almost every day as Tropical Storm Faye approached.

I have a rain jkt that folds into its pocket and is very compact. It is Coleman brand and while I paid about $30 for it, I've had it for over 5 yrs and it still shows no signs of wear yet.
Keep my fingers crossed that it lasts for our Aug 09 trip.
