Disowning DS

I am in the same spot! We go once a year and the kids are starting to rebel. We also travel alot within the states and they would rather see other things. My kids are onlyl 4 and 7! It really hurts when I ask my 7 year old what her favorite vacation spot is and she says Tan-Tar-A!!! If anyone's been there, then you know there is no comparision..
The kids don't pick where we go so they get over it. We will probably not be back to Disney for a few years after our trip next month. Good luck.

I laughed when I read that! I grew up in St. Louis. Tan-Tar-A! Versus DISNEY! OMG!

My kids are also like, again????? Well, when I have spring break and my DH has to work, I am NOT staying home for a week. He even asked me this week (it's been cold here and so now I need to plan spring break) why we don't just stay home? Ummmmmmm, lemme see...... because I don't want to? From here (Maryland) I can still get $150 round trip to Orlando, stay on hotel points, so it's a cheap trip. Plus, it's an easy place for me to take my kids without my DH. No driving, or little, and it's relatively safe (of course we are careful, but I'm not driving around sightseeing with them).

Now that my kids are older, we do try to brainstorm for vacations. I'm trying to come up with fun places, and keep costs down a bit, but our snag is if something comes up at work, DH may not be able to come. So I don't want somewhere that I wouldn't go without DH.

I think it is partly the age - my usually Disney-loving 8yo was/is lukewarm about our last trip and the next, and I think it is tied into the pressure they get at school at this age to leave behind "babyish" things. Disney World, in kid-culture, is Mickey and Princesses, and those things just aren't "cool" at 7-8 years old. She still has a blast while we're there and doesn't want to go home, but at home she feels that peer influence more and it shows in her attitudes about Disney.

What we've done, to accommodate one kid who has just never been that into Disney and one who is kind of "eh" about it right now, is take the kids' opinions into account in choosing destinations. Maybe letting your son choose a destination and help plan a trip (within reason, of course) for in between the Disney trips you have planned would give him a little break? We do zoo/museum/city trips for my oldest in between Disney vacations and make a point of at least one weekend a year at the indoor waterpark he enjoys, so that he's not feeling like all/most of our travels are just dragging him along to Disney World. We don't let him dictate the big trips, which are usually but not always Disney for practicality's sake (the age difference between my kids and the fact that DH can only travel during the winter kind of limits our options), but getting him involved in planning those little trips shows him that we will take his opinions into account and try to balance everyone's interests.

My kids got to a point where they got "disneyed out" (their term, not mine). From that point on we compromised. We went to Orlando and did other things besides WDW. Guess what? We all had a great time! We usually do one or two days at WDW and the rest doing Univeral Studios, Islands of Adventure, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center, the beach for the day, airboat rides, mini-golf, Ripley's, Wonderworks, Titanic Exhibit (not sure if that's still there), hang out at the pool for the date, etc.. There is so much to see and do in the area we were able to accomodate everyone.
