Honestly, I don't get a warm cozy feeling from all the "sand" being brought in. It's quite swampy/mucky/wet in that area, and sand has a tendency to "settle". Don't get me wrong, I know the engineers know what they are doing, but sometimes I wonder...:crazy2:

According to the CM I talked to in January, the sand is mixed with the mucky, swampy soil so that it can stand up to construction. That is what they did on the villas side. We saw them trucking in lots of sand, then they mixed it in with a backhoe. The CM says that they have to wait until it settles to a certain density until they can build there.

From the quantity of the sand they are bringing in on the north side, it looks like they plan to convert quite a bit of the swampy area into land that will be used for the new cabins.

Yep, tons of sand on the Villas side. It appeared ready to just settle for awhile; in the meantime, the new beach building pipes are going up quickly.

We are continuing what looks to be a trend by foregoing WL and staying at Poly this year. We have absolutely loved WL the last two years but have always wanted to try Poly, so thought during construction palooza would be the perfect time. I'm still keeping a very close eye on WL and really appreciate all of the updates people are sending. I am still very optimistic the end product will be really great, but the process of getting there is not.

Gah! We had planned to stay at WL for five nights just before Thanksgiving. We've always been POR folks before, but wanted to try something different and WL seemed like it might be a nice fit nearing the holidays. Now all of the construction talk - and bad bus experiences, and limited elevators, and everything else - has me rethinking. It would be a Standard room.

Am I setting us up to be disappointed? Would Courtyard views be a better choice, or is the impact resort-wide so it really wouldn't matter?

I think the most important part is to have realistic expectations. If you are surprised at the first sign of construction, you will be off to a bad start. If you follow this thread and the construction thread, you will have a good idea of what to expect. I would not switch to Courtyard View based solely on the construction, because you still are likely to see scaffolding around the South wing, especially in the earlier parts of this year. You can however get a bit of a deal by booking Standard View, since it appears that anything that is not courtyard view is classified as Standard for the rest of the year, making it a relatively good deal since you could get a previously more expensive Woods View room. Of course it isn't a good deal for you if you don't want to see construction activity below your room and around the resort.

We love WL and realize that it will not be at its best this year, but still are planning to stay here in September and are looking forward to it.

As far as bus experiences go, that is no different now or before, and there are often bad bus reviews posted for many resorts. Realistically I wouldn't expect better bus service from WL to any park except MK than what you would get from POR. The MK buses are super quick, and the boat option is great too, even if not as fast. The proximity to MK is still a nice advantage that WL has over POR. In our experience the buses to the rest of the parks are similar to POR by the time you figure in an additional stop at GF or FW from WL on the way to the parks.

Agree completely. Buses are as good here as any resort at which we've stayed and, in fact, better than most. The elevators shouldn't be a factor unless a group seeks super quick, always available ones. Sometimes you wait a minute or two; sometimes you get one right away. There are going to be some noticeable construction areas; however, the lobby is still grand; the music is still majestic; the food is still good; the music still plays. If all you plan to do is stay around the Lodge all day, perhaps a move is warranted. If you simply want to have the ambiance, feel, and smell of the Lodge, you will be fine.

Thanks all for both sides of the story! I am very excited for our first WL stay, but want to manage expectations. So for an extremely specific question, was anyone on their balcony mid-afternoon during construction? That is our naptime plan and want to know if we need to plan earphones or something like that.

We are arriving Thursday and just received this email. I remember from previous stays the afternoon pool party being very noisy. It would have drowned out ANY construction noise!

Dear XXX Family,

We are excited you have chosen Disney's Wilderness Lodge as your vacation destination and look forward to sharing the magic of the Pacific Northwest with you.

In preparation of your arrival, we want to inform you of refurbishment work that will be in progress during your stay. To ensure you are best able to plan your visit, please be aware of the following impacts:

bullet.gif
While we work to enhance our Resort, you will notice construction work in various areas. Noise may be heard throughout the Resort while this work is being completed, but rest assured, construction will not begin until after 9:00am daily. Certain pathways, including the nature trail, will be unavailable, and views of the surrounding wilderness may be altered.
bullet.gif
The leisure pool, Hidden Springs Pool, at The Villas at Disney's WildernessLodge, will be closed for enhancement along with the beach, marina and playground. During this time, our recently-renovated Silver Creek Springs Pool will remain open for your use and boat transportation to Magic Kingdom® Park will continue to be provided, weather permitting.

We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience. If you need assistance with your reservation, please contact your original booking agent listed on your confirmation letter.

Thank you for being our Guest. We look forward to seeing you soon!

There would seem to be noise during the day. I can post my experience Friday if you would like. I would guess the noise levels will vary depending on what is going on at the time of your visit though.

Awesome! Thank you! Little man isn't a light sleeper, it is more about making sure whichever grownup is tagged with staying with him for the afternoon (the other one will have DD4 and get to go have more low-key fun!) can just hang out on their tablet/phone whatever and, if the weather is decent, sit out on the balcony. Some noise is fine, but I am thinking we may bring earphones to drown out heavier duty noise...

38 days to go!!! :) Now to start on my lists (packing, groceries, etc...) Can't wait!!

Mid-afternoon on the balcony likely will involve a bit of noise, particularly if they're using heavy machinery. However, earphones will ameloriate that noise to some degree. When we were out on the balcony, you could still carry on a conversation or read easily enough, but you certainly could hear the construction. Once inside, however, we found the noise to be far less intrusive. Early morning coffee or tea and evenings with libations on the balcony should be peaceful. Hope you have a great stay! :thumbsup2

We got a text at 6:30 this am our room was ready. We rolled up to the Lodge at 10:50 am and are now sitting in our room (with our luggage delivered) overlooking the boat docks! We've been pixie dusted. pixiedust:Beautiful location! I will pop up some pictures later this evening.

There is also a construction pin set in the room! So far I've only heard the boat whistle for noise.

More later on I promise. We are off to indulge in our Ooey Gooey!

My boyfriend and I are headed to WL villas for a week on 04/09/16... I've never stayed at WL before and I'm really excited. Haven't been to WDW in 11 years and he has only been once almost 20 years ago. Any advice is much appreciated!

Welcome to the thread and congratulations on returning to WDW! Don't forget to take the free architectural tour. POST 23 has photos and info. on the Wonders of the Lodge Tour.

We just came back from a 1 week stay - we actually loved the resort about 1/2 empty - no crowds/lines at the bus stops, Pool or Roaring forks.

Even though there were only 2 working elevators, we never experienced any waits even with 2 strollers. They were mostly empty and seemed to be waiting on the 1st floor for guests to come in.

We traveled with family who had never stayed or even seen the resort before and they loved it!

So happy that we stayed here again and cannot wait to go back.

Thanks for your little TR and your great photos. Having fewer people at a resort makes a huge difference.

Hi Kook! :wave2:
I have a DIS question. Even though this is one of my watched threads, I haven't gotten any alerts for a couple of pages now. Do you have to post to get alerts?
Thanks. Hope all is well.

Sorry I'm so late with this. You'll get one alert, if you don't go back to the thread, you won't get another. As soon as you do go back to thread, you'll get another alert the next time someone posts:)

I had club lvl scheduled for May and decided to call the hotel directly. I ended speaking to the folks on the club lvl. They said you can here the construction in lobby. Combined with a courtyard view on massive scaffolding on the south wing I said that was enough for me to switch. I go on vacation to relax not to feel Im at work with beep beep and kaboom noises. I switched to Poly for an extra 600. I hope itll be worth it. I always stay at Wilderness lodge on every vacation for the last 20 years. It was hard to switch but I think need some time before I return home.

Even though it isn't WL, which is what you're used to, Poly has some very nice features:

You can walk to the TTC to go to Epcot.
You can also walk to the GF and have a bite to eat or enjoy the lobby and band in the evening.
The rooms are much larger at Poly.
The beach is open.
They offer a great view of Wishes.
Major construction has been completed.
Trader Sam's and Dole Whips!

0630 is amazing and this allows you to get 24 hours out of the room;). Hope you're enjoying your first day.

Well they kept (or added I can't remember) the fire pit.

The fire pit was there, so it's interesting that it hasn't been uprooted. Thanks much for all your photos. Are you still there?

Welcome-no back on the tundra.

Thanks for posting those pictures, Jade1. It is great to have the villas perspective. It looks like you hung the camera over the fence to get the last photo. ;)

Could you tell whether or not they had guests staying in the ground floor villas that faced the construction area?

I know the 2nd floor did, but dang if I noticed ground floor-would doubt that but nothing stopped me from walking out there so never no.

Other than the trees being gone the only signs of construction is a path being built directly below our balcony. I'm taking the camera tomorrow (visiting the horses after breakfast) so I will take some from the boat as we go by.

So some non construction views!

We have been pixie dusted on our cruise stateroom as well: upgraded to a midship full veranda! I am so excited to get aboard tomorrow.

That is really great! I think a pixie dust midship full veranda is totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the pictures. I can't wait to see how the construction of the new path turns out.

We were there just three weeks ago, and at that time, there were no guests staying in the ground floor units facing the south wing. In fact, I don't think there were any a floor or two above, either, as they were reproofing and repainting the balconies on that end. Once you moved back toward the Villas building, the rooms did appear to have guests, however. Given the potentially rolling nature of the reroof and repaint jobs, it might be that there will be whole areas not open to guests at any given time.
