And, I would assume that unlike before, the new VWL pool will not permit WL guests, although there will be fewer of those.

I would not assume that - there is only one DVC location that restricted pool use and that is BLT - it's a small pool right in the center of the building and was probably done more so to restrict people coming over from the MK. I expect the use of the quiet pool will remain the same - for all WL/VWL guests. Now it could happen but I think it's very unlikely to.

2 - Although we understand that the rooms will be of a new and different decor from the existing North Wing Rooms, do we yet know if the rooms will all be studio? or a combination of 1Bdrm and Studio???
I talked to a CM who sid that he worked on the remodeling project for four months and he said that they would be studios, one bedrooms, two bedrooms and regular rooms. If I see him tonight I'll try to get more information about it.

So surprised about the decorations still being up, what a nice treat. Was this only at the parks? Low crowds and walk-ons sound dreamy! And, you have another trip to WDW next month to look forward to
Mk was still decorated today. I've only been to Epcot and MK and both of them were still decorated. The only other resort I have been to has been the BC and neither this one or the BC are still decorated.

2. The SW ground floor demo. "spy" photos we have on the WL Expansion thread HERE, seem to show 3 std rooms being converted into one room/villa. Speculation on what villa configuration these would be is also in that post. (The "spy" post was originally posted here in this thread, but I cross-posted it.)
I was told that those three rooms were test rooms that they configured in five different ways and the final design was a result of what they learned during the test period.

A new development happened today. Yesterday they were blocking off the big windows on the Bay Lake side of the resort as part of the prep work. They had finished blocking off the seven and sixth floor windows when we returned at 4pm yesterday. Today they removed the panels from in front of the sixth floor windows and have left the fifth floor windows open. I had complained about the windows being covered to management and I'm glad they finally realized that maybe they should leave them open for a while. Eventually they will block it off when they replace the carpeting but they will wait to do it at the last minute and then for only as long as it takes to remodel the immediate area. But the seventh floor windows are still blocked and I think they will remain that way. :(

It's me the indecisive one again. :) I am curious to hear your thoughts on this. For my April trip I could either book a courtyard view at the lodge or utilize a 'magical' offer and stay in the Garden Wing of the Contemporary for $250 more. Any opinions?

That's $250 more for the entire trip - which is how long? I find the Garden Wing ok. Large rooms but you can be quite a walk from the amenities at CR. WL rooms are smaller but have much more charm.

Super-terrific information!! So no Grand Villas and I wonder what category the non-DVC rooms will be? I wonder if they'll be associated with the Deluxe rooms on that side?

Were you able to take any photos of any of these SW rooms through the sliding glass doors or through the 6th floor CYV window they've uncovered?:magnify::tiptoe:. When I went snooping in August, I tried to get some shots, but the sliding glass doors were shuttered and my MB wouldn't unlock the door LOL. I thought of Seinfeld and wished the doors had reverse peepholes:laughing:

In your case, I'd probably recommend WL because you've stayed there before, it will be a lot less crowded with the entire SW closed, it costs less and you can book a CYV room, which would be my #1 choice at that time. However, will you miss the closed amenities?

We're sticking with courtyard view at WL for the first part of our split stay next month. Unanimous family vote! Part of my vote is based on the fact that there isn't much else available with a discount anymore (even though we have APs.) For our kids, it's because WL runs an extremely close second to Poly for favorite resort and they are usually undeterred by construction. We'd take WL with construction over CR GV for certain. And the low crowds are sounding good. But we may be differently situated - we're doing most of our park time during our WL stay and then moving over to Poly Villas for a little park time / a lot of resort time / runDisney races.

I don't think we would. As long as we have the main pool, the restaurants, and the boat access to MK, we would be good to go. We did go to the beach area one night last trip to watch the water parade which was nice, but it is not a deal breaker. Would we still be able to view the water parade if we asked for a view of Bay Lake? Some of the room photos I have seen would seem to give you that vantage point, but I didn't know if the construction would be in the way of that or not as well.

Thanks for all the feedback!

It has been a little frustrating to find out more about what is going on with the south wing. Most of the windows on the inner courtyard side of the south wing are dark and the curtains are drawn, but they do have some lights on in some of the rooms just to make it look less spooky. I've seem some beds with the linens removed and a bunkbed with the sheets hanging down the side.

The side of the south wing that faces the villa is completely covered in scaffolding from the section that begins above the Cubs Den and goes along the entire south side. This scaffolding is more heavy duty than the scaffolding they used when they were doing the refurbishing work last year. We saw workmen climbing all over it, going up and down. And there were a lot of workman working on it. I couldn't tell what they were doing, though.

They have that whole area blocked off so you can't walk between the south wing building and the former Hidden Springs pool anymore.

We walked to Trails End at Fort Wilderness this morning and saw a lot of construction vehicles in the staging area near the end of the villas building. We took the boat from Fort Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom and we could see the construction work from the boat. Almost all of the trees that used to be around the Hidden Springs pool are completely gone. And for those of you who remember the pool, that was a lot of trees! We could see the backhoe working in that area.

We also did a little exploring after dinner tonight. I was surprised to find that they had blocked off the lovely sitting area that is located on the fifth floor above the main lobby entrance doors. That sitting area has a fireplace that had a fire going in it and two big armchairs. But no one can get to it because they have put up walls to block it. The only balcony sitting area that is still open is the fourth floor seating area above the lobby entrance. All of the other ones are closed off. I think this is the biggest surprise of all. I never expected them to alter the building as much as they are doing.

To summarize as best I can without pictures:

WL unchanged as of right now
:
main lobby area of WL
main pool, splash pad and Trout Bar - still having pool parties, too
restaurants - still serving same food, etc
North wing
seating area on the fourth floor above the main lobby entrance
buses and their frequency - it seems like they are running on the normal schedule although there are less people on them
boats - still running on the same schedule although there are less people on them
wonderful, friendly cast members :)
the whole inner courtyard with the waterfall, etc, is still the same

things that are unavailable or modified:

south wing closed
lobby elevators closed
balcony viewing areas that face Bay Lake closed on fourth floor and fifth floors
sitting area above front doors on fifth floor closed off
beach closed
marina closed
movies on the beach moved to villas building
bike rentals are available I think. I saw all the bikes stacked at the Cubs Den play area
Cubs Den closed
Old Faithful Club under major renovation with temporary situation

They haven't started the heavy construction yet so there really isn't very much disruption at this time. But once they really get going on building the new pool and the cabins, it is going to be one heck of a major project. I would hesitate to advise anyone to stay here during that time, unless you plan to be at the parks during the work hours and you get a good discount. And the courtyard rooms that face the main pool won't really be too affected.

As far as club level - there are some major changes in the works, including building a whole new lounge. But during the construction period the temporary lounge experience will be different than what it has been. We were rather unfortunate to end up arriving in this weird transition period. :(

We are going home tomorrow and I promise to get pictures posted. It was hard to get any pictures of the construction areas because they are blocked off or otherwise hard to access.

We have 11 nights booked at the Lodge in May. I sure hope we don't regret it. We've stayed club level the past 4 years and now with all these changes who knows what to expect.
I had French Quarter booked originally but my husband and son insisted I change it to WL so I guess we'll soon find out. :rolleyes1

WL is our favorite resort and we always stay there. Except for our upcoming trip, starting in 12 days, we booked AKL, because we didn't want to be around all the construction and noise, etc. Then today I get an email from Disney saying that there's a refurb going on at AKL! I realize it's not the same big thing that's going on at WL, but I started wondering if maybe we should just move to WL. I mean, if there's going to be construction and noise, maybe I'd rather be at my first choice.

Could anyone who's been there in the last week or so comment on the noise there? Thanks so much if you can.

ETA: I'd book a courtyard-view room. Don't know if that would make a difference.

Are all of these trees gone? We were in the south wing Nov. 19-25 and this was our balcony view...the FORMER pool area....

Basically 1/2 the hotel is shut down, the whole south side. This includes the lobby elevators, which may be the biggest impact on a standard view room. Most of the concern about CL has been because the construction seems to be disproportionally effecting that area, with the lounge being moved. September is far away! I am sure once things are flowing more you will have more information on how every category is going to be effected. We have one night standard booked at the end of our stay in two weeks, I will be sure to report back here how both parts of our trip go (both the CL part and the standard view part). I am anxious about our choice too, but looking forward to our first WL stay even if the conditions are less than ideal!

Can you explain why the lobby elevators being closed affects standard rooms most. Having trouble picturing this. Thanks!

Does closing the South Wing mean all the club level rooms on that side of the resort are also closed? Our favorite room is 7127 is it closed? Trying to decide what to request if so...

Is the club level desk by the elevators also closed or it still there? Didn't know if it had been "relocated" like the lounge.

I apologize for all the questions I'm just trying to get a grasp on all this construction!!:thumbsup2

Thank you!!
Carla

No I didnt mean that standard rooms were affected most by lobby elevators compared to other room categories, I meant that the other changes (CL construction) isnt affecting those standard rooms. I'll be in both CL and a standard room in a week and a half, I will be sure to report back!

Carla, I'm answering your question right off since you also PM'd:

@Wood Nymph posted that the CL check-in desk has been relocated, but she was greeted downstairs and escorted upstairs.

The mid-Lodge bank of elevators (near The Mercantile) has been closed. I posted the elevator closure announcement here maybe a couple of weeks ago?

The entire South Wing is closed - top to bottom. The mirror of 7127 in the North Wing is 7035 (although everything is backwards LOL) so you might want to request that. However, it's right next door to the VP Suite to where the "lounge" will be relocated very soon, which may be a negative or a positive to some. The "lounge" is currently set up along the wall next to the manager's office. There are a couple of photos posted several pages back.

Essentially, WL has been "halved." Walls are up which block the beautiful lounge view of Bay Lake and the CY. Check-out Wood Nymph's posts here over the last 4 days for more complete information. She's returning home today, but has provided a lot of valuable new information.

I totally agree with Wood Nymph on this matter..If you intend to spend a lot of time during the day at WL, I would opt to move, we on the other hand will be up at dawn, I'm talking 06.30 am, breakfast, and off to the parks, that's where the magic is, and get back to the lodge around 5.00pm..We fell in love with WL in 2014, even during the Main pool refurb, it didn't spoil our time, this year we are returning for 14 nights in October and I'm confident our vacation will be just as magic, oh and the $1600 free spending money will come in handy...Whoo Hoo!

This is a fantastic summary and saves me all the trouble of doing it myself - THANK YOU, Sue! I will post it to the first page and cross-post to the Expansion thread later today. We all look forward to your photos and thank you again for posting such thorough information LIVE!

I would really miss that cozy seating area near the fireplace and desks. That's a favorite spot of ours and many other guests. Bear Face rooms seem to be closed which is another popular request and the Presidential Suite. The North Wing seems to be the only current WL room option.

I know there were many disappointments with your first-ever CL stay, but I'm glad that you encountered some helpful and understanding CL CMs who tried to make it up to you. Just curious, if they had been honest with you prior to arrival and reached out to explain the major changes to CL, would you have accepted an offer to move to another CL or would a credit have been more appealing? IMHO, they should be offering OFC guests this option prior to arrival. I think this would also help mitigate some of the guest complaints encountered by the CMs.

Just returned from 6 nights ar CR garden wing. Def. stay at WL. I found the CR rooms large, but utterly lacking in charm of any sort. The hallways feel like a basement. Low ceilings made of tiles. CR main concourse felt like we were trapped in an airport. We will not be back to CR.

Are the "bear face" rooms off the lobby available or is that part of the rooms being closed?

Quick update: We can see them moving furniture out of the rooms on the sixth and seventh floors of the south wing.
