Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum or not, so mods please move if need be...

My family found out a couple of weeks ago that my grandfather (Dad's dad) has terminal lung cancer. He's been diagnosed as stage IV and I've heard he's been given anywhere from a month to two months without treatment, but who really knows at this point. He's 87 years old and his body just couldn't handle the necessary amount of radiation and chemo to appropriately slow the cancer down.

My wife and I are scheduled to leave for WDW in 11 days. Thankfully, we decided to keep Disney's trip insurance when we booked through them. Hopefully we will not need to use it, but in the event that we would need to use the trip interruption insurance and come home, what do we do? I have read the insurance pamphlet and am fairly confident that this situation would be covered.

Has anyone had to cut a trip short due to a death in the family? What were the steps you took?

Thanks for any guidance on this.

I have had this happen twice and both times Disney refunded all my money.

First time was my mom. I was 2 days into my trip and I had to leave early and they even refuned my Hoop de Doo tickets for that night. Along with the balance of my hotel and my park tickets were credited to no expiration.(Luckily I made it home before she passed)

The second time my uncle passed two days before our trip and they refunded the total amount no questions asked and I didnt have to send a death certificate.

I didnt have trip insurance on either trip and they did this. So I think you are OK since you do have the trip insurance.

Sadly, my mother-in-law passed away the day before our trip to WDW. I called that day and informed Disney. They cancelled our vacation and refunded our deposit. No questions asked. It was very much appreciated. And, we had no trip insurance.

My niece passed away the day before my trip in February of this year. It was EXTREMELY SUDDEN. I did not purchase the insurance and I told them exacltly what happened and I was not given the option of a refund. I was, however, able to postpone it. They gave me until the end of February to make a decision as to when I wanted to go. The good part of this is Disney announced the new 3 days free promo and I was able to double the length of my trip for free! They waved any and all fees that would normally occur for changing, postponing. They said if I had not called I would have lost everything I paid, even with a death certificate. I still don't know how I had the presence of mind to call them amongst all the chaos. I guess the point to this long and rambling story is to communicate with Disney. Give them a call and tell them your concern and I'm sure they will guide you.
