Disney's research that 10% of old hoppers went unused

Does anyone know where I can find out more on Disney's study that 10% of old hoppers went unused? How do they know the passes were thrown away, lost, forgotten about.... considering these never expire and could be used 40 years from now. I'm a research person and I've seen a few people (including Testa) make this comment, but I wonder what it's based on.

I'm curious too as I will be using 4.5 yr old hoppers next week. I've been guarding them like the family jewels!

I've got one day left on a hopper from my honeymoon in '94, and when I go back next year, you bet I'll be using it, too. Suppose they counted me as unused?

ccgegg, the way we heard it from Disney was that almost 9 in 10 passes with unused days are never re-presented at a Disney park. It's possible that all of these passes are being held in desk drawers for trips many years in the future, but my guess is there's a fairly regular curve that re-presented passes follow that leave these unaccounted for. Does that help?

Every hopper pass with a magnetic stripe has to be kept track of in the data banks until turnstiles have recorded usage of all of the days and plusses.

It is easy to use that data to figure out how many park days actually remain unused at any given point in time.

Additional subjective formulas are perhaps applied to draw the arguable debatable conclusion that on average 10% of park days are never used.

According to a Paul Harvey News and Comments report of a few years ago, half of all gift certificates are never redeemed.
