Dear Fellow Cast Members:

As you know, during the past several months The Walt Disney Company has
undertaken a wide range of strategic initiatives designed to help us
achieve our goals for reasonable long-term growth and profitability and to
ensure that our businesses retain their industry leadership and creative
strength. And as we've discussed many times over the years, a financially strong
company results in a creatively strong company.

We have been working equally hard to make sure we are operating in the
most efficient way possible by cutting our costs in almost every area. But
despite our progress, the economy has become more challenging in recent
months and we must continue to seek ways to manage our businesses even
more productively.

Our company has grown rapidly over the past two decades. But we cannot
rest on our record. We need to face up to the increasingly pressing
challenges of the softening economic environment. We must also uphold investors'
confidence in our future while maintaining our core commitment to
quality and creativity in all that we do, including our important and unique
relationship with our guests.

Therefore, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to reduce
the company's worldwide workforce by approximately 4,000 fulltime
employees. This reduction will affect business units in all of our operations, as
well as corporate staff.

While we adjust our strategies to reflect economic reality, we believe
that we must continue to provide our guests with the Disney magic they
expect. Therefore, we will manage this program so that guest service and safety
will not be impacted.

We intend to achieve the reduction to the greatest extent possible
through a voluntary separation program that will provide participating employees
with special severance incentives, extended benefits and outplacement
services. We hope that a sufficient number will choose to participate in this
voluntary plan. However, if our goal is not met through the voluntary
plan, mandatory workforce reductions with lower severance benefits will be
required.

The voluntary program will be available on a one-time basis only. In
some cases, we may not be able to accept employees who wish to participate
in the voluntary program, although every effort will be made to do so.

Obviously, a reduction of this kind imposes stress on all cast members
- those who are staying and those who are not. We will make every
reasonable effort to minimize the stress, and to complete the program within the
shortest time possible, with the goal of reaching our reduced workforce
level in July.

Those of you who will be eligible for the voluntary separation program
will receive additional information about the program within the next ten
days. You will then have three weeks to determine whether it is an
appropriate option for you.

This may be the most difficult series of decisions that the company has
to make.

Has anyone heard how many will be cut from WDW? Since the 4000 cut is from all divisions, I hope the impact is small at WDW!!!

Cuts at WDW will be in the 1200-1400 range (out of 56,000 employees). They are looking at a reduction in salaried and technical positions- not housekeeping, bus drivers or popcorn vendors!

They hope for voluntary retirement to meet the needs and have offered a severance package to those eligible. Stay Tuned!

Does anyone know if the guides could be affected?

Like everyone else, I hope Disney does not neglect quality sevice. However, if my upcoming trip is full of "bad service incidents", I won't be as upset as the poor folks who are unemployed and looking ways to provide for their families.

just a thought....

It seems to me that guides should be very affected by this. They are, after all, in sales. VWL seems to be selling quickly, and BCV won't be available for some time, even under the most optimistic scenario. So there's going to be a period where they've got guides with hardly anything to sell (just VB and HHI). That's sounds like a shaky job situation to me.

Excellent suggestion.

the info that I got is that 4000 salaried employees only and non-guest related area. About 10% per area or something like that. I hope this is not an incorrect info.

It's been mentioned on our CM board that the greeter position is one that is being eliminated and hours are being cut. Sad that these cuts will affect the guest for sure. :(

Sad to think the very small dollar amount that 4000 jobs could amount to compared to the HUGH fat cat salary and bonus of Eisner and his upper management team while the jobs they appear to want to cut are the ones that directly affect customer service. With a hugh celebration planned for the end of this year with the potential of record numbers of guests it seems a little premature to take such action. Besides, Disney's p/e is back in line where it should be, and sales have been quite positive. Perhaps it is just a smoking screen to boost investor confidence.

Well, you will have to blame the Disney board of directors and the Disney shareholders for Eisner's "HUGE fat cat salary", not Eisner himself. He's not the one that says.."you know, I think I should make $1 million a year and get a $11.5 million dollar bonus", it's the board that does that. (he and all Disney execs got zero bonus in '99 because of Disney's poor financial performance).

Most CEOs in the corporate world are in cahoots with the Board of Directors. I'm pretty sure Eisner knew what he will be getting each year. The only reason he got no bonus in 1999 is to appease investors.

NO, we the average guy, stock holder are not in charge when it comes to Eisner and his cronies bonuses. As a matter of fact, we vote down every proposal that gives those guys bonuses and unchecked power. The Disney investors are notorious for being a bunch of noisy, uncooperative investors. The problem is that Eisner, other senior leadership and fatcats, and the board have a controlling interest. It's really sickening when you read the stock report.

my s 2 cents

This is particulary sad considering the amount management lost trying to be internet mavens. How many E ticket ride could have been built drawing income to the resorts?

Instead we get journey into your imagination and less CMs to make magic.

duh! I think that was my point :). Upset investors walk, along with their money. If you, as a Disney investor, are happy with the way the company is being run, you will keep your money in the company. If, as some seem to imply, the Disney board of Directors is a paper tiger and Eisner will do what he wants, no matter what the boards says, well, Disney shareholders should take their money elsewhere. That will certainly affect Disney's financial bottom line

I guess posting the letter to the DVC board has a point but I'm not sure what it is--unless the poster has some axe to grind. Nobody knows if there will be any impact on DVC operations--all the discussion is pure guess work; which I've been lead to believe is neurotic. Why don't we wait and see?? Maybe a good subject for the community or rumor or debate boards. :)

I AM a DIS shareholder! And I bought it because it is a product I spend a LOT of money on; through a LOT of their products and services. But if the quailty of their services suffers because of cuts not only will I make the decision as a customer but also as a shareholder as to whether I continue with Disney and at what level. Take a trip to Universal, Sea world ,or Busch Gardens. They are ALL wonderful parks but they do not carry the level of service that Disney does. If these cuts contribute to Disney's bottom line then I am a winner as a shareholder; but if these cuts affect the level of customer service then I am a loser as a customer. And sooner or later it will also affect me as a shareholder because sales and revenue WILL drop off.
