Are these two resorts close to each other? I know they both reside on Shelter Cove. There is a sale on ebay for Marriott's Harbour Point, but I was seriously considering buying Disney's HHI. Any comparison's about the two would be greatly appreciated!:goodvibes

I am not Dean, but....

IMHO neither of them are dramatically better then the other in terms of location.

I have not stayed at Marriott's Shelter Cove, but have some of thier other resorts on HH and if you were going with one of the beach resorts I think Marriott's a much better deal.

In terms of quality, in some areas my Marriott units exceeded Disney. On HH the unit was bigger.

Now Marriott does not have the "size" flexiblity Disney does. So I would have to pretty much take a two bedroom no matter what. No one bedrooms and studios at most of thier resorts. If like me you are single that's a consideration. I like the size.

Marriott also is not as flexible on "weekend" and short stays like DVC.

For trading based on my reserach on TUG2 I am probably going to buy a Marriott on HH in the next year or so. I am looking for a beach location however.

Thanks Carol, I was hoping you would chime in. There is an ebay auction for Marriotts Harbour Point, no reserve, right now is at $440.00. It is platinum week 21, MF's low $900, 2 bedroom, 2 bath. Was seriously consididering bidding for it, and Platinum will give me great trades. If all things being equal between Disney's HHI and this Marriott, I just might try for this Marriott.

That's a great deal.. If it goes for low enough then you are in great shape.

One thing to check. Marriott actually does have a "ROFR" type thing, but not on ALL thier resorts. (And I think that the one you are looking at is one that's not included in ROFR. The only "beach" resort without it is Monarch.)

Most of the serious bidders on Ebay don't jump in until the last few hours or minutes of an auction. My guess is it will go for more than what it is now.

Have in mind the most you will pay for it if you decide to bid and don't bid too early.

I've bought 2 TS's off of Ebay and if you are serious about it, make sure you can be at your computer near the end of the auction. Last one I won, it was just by $100 dollars, I upped my bid in the last minute.

Good luck if you do decide to go for it.

By the way, you asked if they were close to each other. VERY close. Easy walk. They both overlook the harbor. Marriott's is in the "shop" area and Disney's is directly across

Thanks Starr W. and Carol! I really I want to bid on this....have never done it before, but I have been looking at Disney and this Harbour Point for quite a while. I can't afford the direct ocean Marriott's. :worship:

I think the Disney HHI marsh view is VERY nice. The Marriott shops view is nothing "vacation-y" IMHO. But if the price is right.....enjoy!

Well I just got a response from a TUGGer that used to own this resort. Basically the ebay listing is WRONG!! Its not a platinum week, wasn't really an orignal Marriott's ownership (think they bought it out), not good trading with II (lower on Marriotts trade todum pole). I'm leaning towards Disney's HHI for what I can afford. Thanks to these bbs like DIS and TUG, we are all the smarter!!:goodvibes

HP is fixed weeks so no Platinum. Platinum at GO is week 24-34 and at BB & SW is 22-34. It can be a good deal depending on the final price and unit type. HP has 4 types of units (A, B, C & D). A & B are the tops and D are the pits though given the way II works, they all trade the same.

HP was developed by the Burns Corp and bought by Marriott in the 80's around the same time they bought Monarch. There are still quite a few of the old owners around and they are not that thrilled with Marriott as a group. Not that they're upset, just that they are indifferent, much like many of the owners in Vail were.

For a HH stay, there are better choices IMO. GO gold might be a great choice to use as it goes through later in June. SW and BB gardenview are great resorts to use and trade both. HP compared to DVC HH is in a better location from a view standpoint but a little worse from a standpoint of walking to activities/dining. If you can go during early to mid June you might also consider a better choice from a trading standpoint and try to trade in from time to time.

IMO, HP used to be the best trading value for a Marriott ownership but I no longer feel that is true for several reasons including the fees have gone up, it's not a lockoff and I suspect it won't be a Marriott too many more years. I have owned at HP and have stayed there twice as well as having stayed at DVC. There are a number of inaccuracies in the add. HP sleeps 6, not 8, there are no 980 sq ft units, there is no unit 3 and the picture is of Sunset Pointe not HP. OTOH, I have bought from this lister and while we are not finished with closing, the communication and follow up has been good on his part. I am not nearly as happy with the closing company though. If you find out more specifics or have questions email me and I can likely help you figure out if this is a unit you might truly want vs a lessor unit you may not.

Thank you Dean!:worship: I am looking for a quality Marriott in HHI that will trade well. I don't have the $$ for an OF Platinum, but wanted more trading power that a Silver. I'll keep looking, take your suggestion and look for Gardenview BB if it trades well. Another TUGGer also posted on this and said the add was inaccurate. So now I'm leary. Between TUG and DIS, I'm gonna get the low down. I'll continue my search, Dean you rock!

Assuming about 50% usage and 50% trading and that you want to use it for shoulder times (Easter to mid June, late Aug to mid Sept), I think a BB or SW GV unit will likely be your best bet but ultimately it comes down to price. The resort quality is a little lacking for Monarch, HP, SP, Heritage and HC. As I noted, a Gold GO week can give you 2 extra summer weeks for about the same price and a fair amount less than a Platinum week. If you need to travel in the summer, buy Platinum though. Ultimately it comes down to your expectations, willingness to compromise, when you can travel and your budget. If your budget is a major limitation, a good trading resort such as Williamsburg Platinum, Horizon Branson Platinum or a Desert Gold or Platinum might be a better choice and allow you to trade in at times.

Regarding the location, both DVC and Harbour Pointe are on the marsh and both have a similar view (although HP does have all marsh view villas), HP is a long ways from the Disney resort and is not located on the harbour.

If you swam acoss the marsh, it's about 300 yards between the resorts - but walking is over a mile - the shops and restaurants are located about halfway. Harbour Pointe and Sunset Point are next to each other and are at the far end of the Shelter Cove area.

Here is an aerial view - HP/SP are at the far left and the DVC resort is on the island at the upper right. Shelter Cove Harbour is in the middle.

Excellent view Doc! This really puts the two resorts into perspective. I am really drawn to HHI......thanks for your help.
