Disney's FORT WILDERNESS CABINS & CAMPGROUNDS Thread

Thank you both! Can I ask how far out we should book the golf cart?
I would book asap. My daughter and her family are staying Oct 5-10th. She wanted a 6 seater since they have a double size stroller/ car seats etc with a baby and a toddler. They were out of them----she got a standard 4 seater. She called a month ago and they were out of 6 seaters so those must go very fast.

You can book the golf cart for up to a year out. They don't charge it until you arrive, but they do have to reserve it on a major credit card. I would do it ASAP. Our vacation is going to be in June and they had already told me that they were running low on golf carts. I was able to book one and then we moved our vacation to March at the cabins and I was still able to get one. But with that campground being so massive, I wouldn't go without one.

We're trying to book a stay using our DVC but since we don't own at the fort, we can't book until 7 months in advance.
Is there a way to book a golf cart before having a stay reserved? Now I'm worried, we will book but not be able to secure a golf cart.

You have to have a reservation before you can reserve a golf cart.

You do have to have a reservation confirmation number, but remember that you could always book a golf cart and have it delivered by an outside company.

Was successful in securing a DVC reservation & golf cart!
As long as we are staying on DVC points, we are still eligible for extended evening hours correct? And the does MK run the boats after evening hours back to the Fort?

Yes you qualify for Extended Evening Hours (EEH), the boats, buses run during EEH, and after. Note the boats may be paused or stopped due to lightning in the area.

3rd party golf cart companies are no longer allowed to deliver golf carts to FW.

Well, Disney's position is a bit nuanced.

3rd party golf cart companies have not been able to deliver carts to FW for MANY years now (over a decade?).

HOWEVER, 3rd party carts are permitted if they meet the more recent insurance requirement (I know of at least one 3rd party who offers that) and brought into the Fort by the FW guest. 3rd party companies arrange with you to meet off Disney property. Going off property to pick up and return the cart both at the start of the rental and the conclusion of the rental is inconvenient for the FW guest (which is Disney's intent) but the savings can be substantial (generally, the longer the rental period, the more it's worth it to use a 3rd party).

Generally speaking, with the exception of major holidays like Halloween and Christmas, Disney cart rentals are available to FW guests since the FW-only restriction was implemented. And even those two holidays mentioned may have had carts available. So don't worry too much even at the 7 month point (again, generally speaking).

Are they a lot cheaper to get from a third-party? I'm not gonna have a car so picking one up would definitely not be an option for me. I reserved one from the Bike Barn. Yeah it's really expensive, but I learned from my last two times at Fort wilderness that it was definitely worth it. Especially when it comes to a long walk or bus ride in the rain. Plus, they're so super fun. Honestly, I've never enjoyed driving quite so much as when I'm driving a golf cart and I don't know why. 🏎️

Well, here is where opinions diverge.

As a guy going to the Fort for over 20 years, I see golf carts as an expensive convenience but not a necessity. IMO I can walk or bus for park transport in either Fort direction from October to May. During the warm summer months, I see the benefit.
Especially when it comes to a long walk or bus ride in the rain.

So you want the alternative of a WET golf cart ride in the rain (with no rain tarps on a Disney cart) over a dry bus ride? And if it's raining at FW, it's likely raining in the parks that you just left.

Oh and if it's raining, stay under the bus depot shelter and wait for an internal bus - don't walk without ponchos, umbrellas, etc.

Well that's definitely a factor - the other alternative is to only rent ahead (as best you can schedule) for days when you think you might NEED a cart. If there are some days the cart might sit at your site, why pay for it? :confused3 Also no car means you are forced into Disney transport and can't drive to/from parks like EP, DHS, AK or Disney Springs.

The carts are "fun" for sure. And we've rented carts maybe 3-4 times in all our stays when we had some more elderly family members there who could not walk the distances all at one time that we can. And once we only got a cart for only a few days of our entire stay.

So without a car and forced into Disney transport in all options otherwise, @Kite16510, the cart helps you on the Fort legs of travel at a price. But everyone's case is different but this solutions fits yours as you say.

PS - in our situation, since we drive to WDW, we stay at the Fort and walk/bus to the Fort dock for MK days but drive to the other parks (EP, DHS, AK, DS) so no cart needed.

The main reason I'm a big fan of the golf carts is because in 2005 and 2015 when we took our kids to the mouse, we rented a golf cart both times at Fort wilderness where we were staying. My son who is 25 now, has autism and he loved riding in the golf cart. So it made all of the transitions easier because the golf cart acted as a reinforcing agent. So when we had to leave the Parks, we were able to tell him hey we're gonna ride the boat and then the golf cart and then we're gonna go to the cabin and eat pizza. So in that case which is very narrow, it's worth $450. Money is money, but not having a meltdown at having to leave the Parks is priceless.
