Disney's FORT WILDERNESS CABINS & CAMPGROUNDS Thread

Hi all, we are considering staying in a cabin next month largely due to the separate bedroom and boat to MK. If we do this we will likely rent a car as that is much cheaper than a gold cart. Question is can you drive the car to the marina and main bus transportation areas and leave it there for the day to take advantage of the disney buses? Don't really want to drive to the parks, just want a cheaper option to get around the fort. Thanks I'm advance

I believe the only place you could park your car is at the front of the campground. Otherwise you'd have to take the internal bus to the marina or main bus stop, etc.

Am I correct, all Fort experts and gurus? :-)

Not the news I was looking for but thanks. Don't want to do the double bus thing so will likely look elsewhere.

No, you can't drive to the Trading Post (which is also where other things are located, like the main pool, and the s'mores cookout), or to the boat dock (which is also the location for Trail's End, Hoop De Doo, Backyard BBQ, and a large play area.) They won't allow cars to park there. (Just golf carts.)

Yes, you can drive to the main bus stop, because that's also the entrance to the campground, and there's a large parking area there. Although my opinion would be that, if you're going to do that, then why not just drive to whichever park you're on your way to? Since you're staying in a Disney resort, you have free parking at the parks.

Me, I'm not at all sure that renting a car is cheaper than the golf cart, but I'll take your word for that.

As others have said cars are only allowed to park at your cabin and in the main parking lot. As someone else mentioned, you can park in the main parking lot to use the buses to Epcot, DHS and AK. For MK, you would need to bus or walk to the marina to take the boat to MK. So, MK would rally be the only park you would need to use the internal buses. We normally drive to all the parks, except MK since it is so much easier, but I know my way around and normally had a DD if I drank in the parks.

WDW Golf Cart - $60/day

The most I have paid per day for a rental was $50/day and that was a minivan. Most of my rentals are under $30/day.

Thanks. I thought there was a bus to MK too. Is that not the case?

Agree on cars. I usually do name your own price through Priceline and have never paid over $20/day.

There is not a bus to MK unless you take the bus from the Settlement area to WL and then take the bus from there to MK. Sometimes it might be the same bus and you might not have to switch, but I do not think that is always the case.

Thanks. We stayed at WL last time and since it had the boat and bus I'd presumed the same of FW since it's further out.

How many pools at the campground? From what I see it looks like only 2?

I'm checking, because I last went there like 10 years ago, and it looks like things have changed.

Disney's web site says that the Meadow swimming pool (located in the center of the campground, near the trading post and several other things) has a pool with water slide, a kiddie pool, and a whirlpool. And what sounds like a splash area, too.

And then makes reference to a different area, the "Wilderness Swimmin' Pool" (which I assume is near the boat dock, but I'm unable to confirm that), which is an "all ages quiet pool", which also has a whirlpool.

So I suppose "two pools" kinda depends on what you count as a pool.

(I don't remember it having all those things, when I stayed there.)

The Meadows pool is the main pool area located near the center of Ft Wilderness. It has the big pool with slide and kids' splash area.

The Wilderness pool is a "quiet pool" located near the cabins in the 2500 loop.

I believe both pools have hot tubs. :)

So my parents are traveling with their dog and staying in a pet loop there at the fort. We usually do brunch somewhere on our last day and my parents were going to join us. Ideas for how to do that with the dog? They have a travel trailer, but it will be June, so the dog can't stay in the camper without a/c. Would it be best for them to drop the dog off at the kennel maybe for a few hours while they pack up, check out, and meet us for brunch? Also, can they park the camper in the lot at the campground after checking out and still use the car to meet us and/or visit a park before they actually leave?

Dropping their pet off at the kennel would probably be the best option for them. I'm fairly certain you can park the camper in the parking lot after checkout. When we were there last June, I remember making the comment that there seemed to be lots of campers and RVs in the parking lot.

It's been 10 plus years since my last stay at Ft. Wilderness -- I can't remember if there is a grill or not with the cabin, and if there is much luggage storage, or should I plan on using the car trunk? Final question -- we are renting a golf cart -- is there a parking "lot" down by the marina --- we'd like to take the boat to MK and I thought there was an area to leave the carts.

Thanks,

Tom

We were just there in mid dec.
No, there's not really a lot of luggage space when the cabin is full but there's so much to to outside it wasn't really a problem,
And yes lots of room to park your cart down by the marina and some of us thought that the boat ride to the MK was one of the highlights of the day.
Have a great trip

Yes, there's a grill. At least when I was there, it didn't come with any supplies, but the Trading Post sells them.

Really couldn't tell you, from memory, about luggage storage. Yes, there's a closet in the bedroom. (And they do gave lots of square footage.)

Unless it's changed, then there is certainly golf cart parking at the marina, Trading Post, and at the entrance (where the main bus stop is.) (I assume that's the primary reason people get them.)

Oh and yes there's a charcoal grill by the deck and they sell charcoal at the meadows store.

Hi there, Tom :wave2:

This has already been answered but thought I would add my two cents ;) The cabin doesn't have an excess of storage space, however...we became very creative and used every nook and cranny that we could find  There are 3 or 4 drawers in the bedroom plus the closet. We also used the drawer in the night stand. Underneath the sink in the bathroom is storage that you can utilize. Also, in the den area there are two cabinets under the windows that can be used for storage. I think we put our cameras, phones, etc. in these. The kitchen cabinets have "kitchen stuff" in them, but they aren't completely packed at all....could be used, too :thumbsup2

No worries...when there's a will there's a way :goodvibes

Happy Planning!
Heather

Hey all!

We're big Cabin fans as ya might be able to tell and DH and I are going to be heading there Feb 9-11 for our 1 day extravaganza. Problem is... were arriving late on the 9th. like... really late... like 9 or 10pm or later and we REALLY want to rent a 2 person surrey bike while we were there so that we could head out to the MK early the next morning and catch the welcome show. We've missed the welcome show the last 3 times there and it's really pulling at my heartstrings and since this is a really big trip for celebrations we don't want anything to go wrong. (like not being able to bike out to the outpost in the am). We were wondering if anyone has had any luck with managing to somehow snag one of these either later in the night or any other such arrangement.
