Disney's Fascination with Raven

Somewhere in her over inflated head of hers she thinks she is cute, charming and talented (strikes 1,2 and 3). She comes across as snooty with a pinch of pompous just for kicks. She was annoying as a kid and is even more annoying as an adult. Disney needs to rethink their choice of Raven as the face for Disney.

Since there's an elephant in the room that nobody wants to acknowledge, I'll throw it out there. Disney uses her because she is black. And not just black, but she looks and sounds like middle class black. A demographic Disney wants. Not saying it's right or wrong, but that's why they're using her more as the "face of Disney."

I'm sorry I don't buy it. When I see her she doesn't represent a typical middle class female black teen.

P.S
I hit the 500 post mark :cheer2:

Well, Kids like her and if the Kids like her, parents buy it! Business is business!

My DD's Love Raven and I have no problem bcs is a kids show, I don't have to like the kids shows, if they are appropriate for them like all Disney shows, I'm fine.
I do expect them to like me shows!

I like Raven and I think she is very good at getting the message through to younger kids. I like the fact that she is a little more pooh sized than other actresses her age but, she isn't changing her body for the opinions of others like many do these days. :duck: ::yes::

BINGO!!!

I agree!!!

She's not the perfect barbie, and it is a perfect message for the girls.

I like her too, their jokes are silly sometimes but for the kids are fine.

She's one of the few Disney actresses I love. She cracks me up all the time and DD loves her too. I really like that she's not a skinny little lollipop actress.

Ya nasties!

I totally agree! I really like Raven. :)

OK guys. Sorry, I'm out of touch. Who did Raven play in the Cosby Show?

I like her. I think she's funny and pretty and I like her singing voice. I especially like that she isn't rail-thin like many teen girls and young women on TV. I think she is a good role model for girls.

She was the little one that came late in the show. She was the child of the military guy that Denise married. My DS calls her a poor substitute for younger Rudy. ;)

I also agree that she is a good role model for kids
she is not rail freak thin like duff and her show is good clean fun for kids

I read this last night, and wasn't going to respond. I like raven. She is one of the very FEW teen actors who make me LOL. I laugh as often watching Raven, as I do watching King of Queens, or Yes, Dear.

It is not often that you have a teen that can carry a sitcom, and she does a GREAT job. Her sidekick Chelsea is excellent also.

I laughed at the posts that mention they couldn't stand her on the Cosby Show either! :rotfl2: SHE WAS 3 YEARS OLD!

The irony is--she isn't pooh sized at all...she is "healthy" sized.

Read--she's not fat--she just looks that way compared to other sticks on tv right now.

We watched the show on Food Network last night. We really enjoyed it! I like Raven and also agree that she is a good role model for our kids. My DD-10 wathches her show all the time. It's refreshing to see a role model for our kids that does not feel she has to be so thin. I think she looks great!

I thought she was fine on the Food channel last night (although I wished she would stop over emphaizing words, and hand gestures). She looked great, but I thought the stylist that put her in a horizontalstripes skirt was nuts.

I think Raven is ok. I like the fact that she doesn't give in to the pressure to be a stick figure. I think that she is a talented actress but I also think that she doesn't know when to turn it off. I watched the Food Tv special last night and she was definately over-doing it at times. Her facial expressions and body movements were a little too animated and she looked like she was posing at the end of each segment.

I do think that Disney keeps her prominent not only for her talent but also to reach out to an rapidly expanding demographic of middle and upper class black Americans as well black Americans in general. I have no problem with that as they are also members of our society and deserve as much as anyone to have their children be able to model themselves after someone on television who looks like them. In a perfect world (which will never be achieved), it wouldn't matter what color of skin an actor/actress had. I do think that it is important for persons of color (and society in general) to have role models of color rather than sterotypes to watch on television.

I couldn't agree more! What were they thinking with those stripes

I don't get it either. Couldn't stand her on The Cosby Show, can't stand her now.

I thought I was the only one that didn't think she was that cute on Cosby. Something about her attitude got to me then - my grandma would have said she was too smart for her britches - anyway, I still don't get the attraction.

At least I now know I am not alone.

ETA - I agree with the size thing though. She is healthy looking as opposed to skinny as a rail. As a role model for kids this is a fine choice from that stand point.

Maybe it is as previously mentioned she is rather cocky and seems too stuck on herself and has been that way even during her Cosby days.

I like Raven. DD likes Raven. As for over-doing it on the Food Network special, a lot of what comes across on a show like that depends on the director. They often want the actors to over-do. The want very high energy.
