Disney's $1 billion dollar bet on magical wristband - Wired

Except that before you could repeat that as many times as you liked.

Now you can only schedule 3, and the experience at WDW to date has mostly been that the only inventory left for 4th and subsequent FPs is for secondary rides that didn't require a FP previously. And your 3 scheduled rides cannot include repeats. Then there's the whole issue of tiering.
I'm not so sure. Disney has been welcoming millions more into their theme parks. Those people would be hungry for FPs too. They'd snatch them up faster. The supply and demand issue would've grown more pronounced then ever.

Disney has redirected them to other attractions keeping the marquee attractions open.

You make it sound like they had no alternatives.

They had no alternatives! My goodness, do you think new and exciting attractions would be a better investment than MDE? That's an absurd notion! Look at how much more popular Universal would be if they had invested in MDE rather than new attractions!

They did. It just would've cost billions to do. This cheaper and maximizes existing assets. It also serves a guest purpose as well.

I actually find it perplexing that they were so successful with the "build more great themed attractions" approach at DLR yet chose the "force guests into attractions that are a waste of space" (to quote you) approach at WDW.

I like them. SpaceShip Earth would qualify (sadly) I just have Niche tastes.

A total replacement and upgrade of many these rides would be billions. Like Carsland several times over. This way they accomplished many goals, brought in a new streamlined reservation system, brought prebooked FPs, etc.

Spaceship Earth in my opinion doesn't belong in the "waste of space" category, it's not even a niche attraction for folks who like diff'rent strokes. It's still a very pleasant ride, has a nice soundtrack and it's been renewed regularly over the years to keep pace somewhat. Unlike quite a few other attractions like Carousel of Lameness, Great Nearly Forgotten Movie Ride, Ellen's Energy Nap, Captain Moonwalk, etc.

It wouldn't cost billions to renew most of those tired old attractions with a new script, new sets and AAs, new music, new lighting effects, new queues, new projectors, new film footage. And I don't think it's serving anyone's interests, not even Disney buffs with niche tastes, to hoodwink people into riding them.

The short term success of the FP+ strategy is hard to argue with. But there's an intangible, invisible line in American culture that once crossed, is really hard to re-cross. It's something to do with hipness, whether people roll their eyes and make jokes about you or whether they still respect and admire you. If the list of really sad, lame, old and un-renewed rides gets too long then it doesn't matter how many of them the algorithm makes you ride before you can pull a second FP for Test Track ... people won't be there to find out.

Carousel of progress is a well liked attraction and is one that Walt worked on. Now it could use a refurb but it's one of those last things that Walt had a chance to do even tho the Florida version is a replica of the one he did. Also the movie ride is getting updates with its new sponsor which should help it out.

Actually, the Carousel of Progress is the only attraction that was physically packed up and moved across the country from Anaheim to Orlando. The scenes were rearranged because the theater rotates in the opposite direction but are the original sets (except the final scene, which has been updated on multiple occasions).

When exactly is the Movie Ride supposed to be renovated? 2020?

They are updating the pre show and ending video this spring. Other updates aren't officially announced get but are expected to come within the next year or so.

Am I the only one thinking this update will be just to add "Brought to you by Turner Classic Movies"? ;)

Seriously though..... if they don't change up some of the scenes that are part of the ride, I have a hard time thinking it will feel like much of an update.

They are supposed to be adding new movies to both the pre and end show films. No word on what will happen with ride scenes just yet.

Maybe I just expect too much, but that ride is still going to feel very dated to me if the scenes in the ride itself remain unchanged.

By golly, y'all have convinced me. I'm never going to Disney World again! I never knew how boring it was! :duck:

I've never claimed it was boring - but I sure don't like paying more and getting less! In the past 15 years the gate price has doubled, and there are fewer total attractions in the parks now than there were then. I'll pause for a moment and see if that manages to sink in.
