We Simply Had a Wonderful Disneyland Christmastime

Hello everyone,

My name is Robert and I took my sister to Disneyland during the holidays for the first time. This trip report will focus on food allergies, but I'll also tell what we did each day.

We live on the east coast of the country, so Walt Disney World is a car trip away while Disneyland is a 5-hour flight away. We last went to Disneyland in June of 2009 - I don't think I need to tell you that a lot has changed over the last 4.5 years.

As I said, we both have food allergies. I'm gluten-intolerant, so it's not a severe allergy but I avoid gluten anyway. My sister can not have dairy, rice milk, or rice flour. Her allergy is more severe than mine. I'll start off by saying that our dining experiences were very, very good. I will detail where we ate and what we had during each meal.

Backing up just a little, we reserved our trip through AAA. You get a small discount on the price of the room, but you get a lot of free-bees as well. We got a free attraction photo package that we used at Radiator Springs Racers (5X7 + 4 wallets), pin/lanyard set, and a lot of discounts at Downtown Disney (we didn't use those). We also reserved our plane tickets through Delta's website. I won't say what we paid, but it was very close to what we paid in 2006 (amazing considering gas prices and the amount of airline mergers that took place).

Our morning began with a 5-hour plane trip on Delta. If you are interested, they offered peanuts, pretzels, and cookies as complimentary snacks. My sister got a lot of peanuts, but I had brought cereal for myself. On of my biggest fears leading up to our departure day was the weather. Would our plane be delayed by snow? Would we wind up sitting in the airport for hours waiting for a plane? Fortunately, none of the above, and we landed at LAX at precisely 10:00. Baggage claim was easy - by the time we got there, only our luggage was on the carousel! The Disneyland Resort Express bus came at 10:47 - we had pre-paid this as part of our AAA package, so we just showed the driver our vouchers. We had very light traffic and arrived at the Disneyland Hotel around 11:35 or so. This was not our first time there, but it was our first time after its recent renovation. Believe it or not, our room was ready and we were in the Frontier tower facing south (we paid for a standard room). We could see the Paradise Pier Hotel from our room, but not much else. We unpacked just a little, turned on our musical headboard, but all we wanted to do was to go to Disneyland! We really like the walk through Downtown Disney on our way to the parks, and all the big fountains. We also liked seeing Olaf's Ice Skating because they were playing the "Frozen" soundtrack. There isn't much for us at Downtown Disney (I've found restaurants not owned by Disney to be hit-or-miss at Walt Disney World, or the real world for that matter, on how they handle special diets). We entered Disneyland at 12:35, amazing timing considering all the weather variables this time of year. Once we were on Main Street, seeing all the decorations for the first time, the Dapper Dans singing, Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle, the Matterhorn, horse-drawn trolleys with jingle bells, the happy tears started flowing! But, we hadn't eaten since breakfast Eastern time, so it's time for our first Disneyland lunch!

Glad getting to Disneyland was smooth sailing. And score on the great prices for Delta tickets! I enjoy walking through DTD as well. Gets you in the mood for the parks. Can't wait to hear about your first official meal!

Thank you for following! I had thought of a summer Disneyland trip, but the airfare was about $200 more than what I actually paid. Weird.

First meal

Backing up just a little, we did a lot of research before our arrival on the Disneyland website. They have a menu for just about every Disneyland restaurant. It's a great resource, especially if you have dietary restrictions. You can see which restaurants you are most likely to be able to eat at, and it helps in planning.

We decided to eat in Tomorrowland. The chicken sandwich at Tomorrowland Terrace has been a hit with my sister in the past, so we started there. We asked a cast member for a chef, who came out to speak with us. They didn't have a bun that was safe for her, but the chicken and French fries were OK (this was a running theme for our 5 days). We took her meal over to Redd Rockett's Pizza Port where I got a gluten-free pizza. I was told it would take 5 - 7 minutes, but I'm pretty sure it was a little quicker. Again, that was a big hit with me in the past and it was again. I saw a really nice snowflake Rice Krispy treat there, but I waited to get one elsewhere (these are not dairy-free and some say they aren't gluten-free either, but I've never reacted to them). Oh - we also got 20% off shopping coupons attached to our receipts (we made good use of these!).

We spent the rest of the afternoon on Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters (I beat my sister), Autopia (a big favorite of ours), Mickey's Toontown, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, and Pirates of the Caribbean. We wanted to go on "it's a small world holiday", but the line was too long. We left Pirates around 5:30, and was amazed that it was already dark! And a lot colder. So, we went back to Tomorrowland and patiently waited for the next available Monorail front to be open. So, we took Monorail Orange to Downtown Disney, and got our jackets at our hotel. We got to see Olaf's Ice Skating Rink open - we may have done this if they had lessons or something for those of us who have not yet reached beginner's level. Anyway, we took a quick break in our room and went back to Disneyland for dinner and the rest of the evening.

Dinner and First Night

It hadn't been very crowded in the afternoon, so I was surprised at how crowded it was now. In fact, both the Plaza Inn and Jolly Holiday Cafe had a long line out the door (maybe it was because of the parade and fireworks). So, our next attempt at dinner was at the River Belle Terrace, another hit from the past. But, here we hit a bump in the road. It seemed like I'd be able to eat there, but my sister would not (she wanted their barbecue pork but it had some dairy in the sauce). That was a little disappointing, so we decided to just head to Main Street and wait for the fireworks. Tonight they were at 7:40, and it was a really nice show (and my favorite Mickey-shaped firework!). We loved the snowfall after it, and it was nice that it was actually cold that night! But, now we really had to have dinner. The line for the Jolly Holiday Cafe was much shorter now, so we tried to eat there. Here, the chef spoke to us over the counter where you order, but he was very nice and helpful. We both got turkey sandwiches, mine on a gluten-free bun and my sister's on sourdough. We also both got very good homemade (I presume) chips as a side. The order took about 10 minutes at most. This was a really good meal.

We had about an hour and a half before the park would close at 10:00 that night, and we went on the Indiana Jones Adventure (another huge favorite of ours), and our first time on Haunted Mansion Holiday. We are one of the few people who have not seen "The Nightmare Before Christmas", so we really didn't know what was going on. I knew going in that it would be a little weird, but it was really weird. (Leshaface - I'm sure this is a favorite of yours.) We got off after 10:00, and looked at some of the Main Street shops. We saw fresh peppermint bark at the Candy Palace and should have gotten it since we didn't see it again. We also looked in the World of Disney and didn't see a whole lot that interested us. We were back at our room around 11:30.

Up next - California Adventure and Cars Land!

I'm glad Redd Rocket's worked out for you! I actually really enjoy their pizza there. A lot of times it's hit and miss for people, but I think it's delicious! Ugh, the rice crispy treats at DLR are so good! DH is pretty obsessed with them too.

You two got quite a bit of rides accomplished for half a day (including the monorail ride!) Usually that takes sooooo long.

I've only gotten sweets and the Jolly Holiday but heard great things about their sandwiches.

Ah! I was just going to say I love The Nightmare Before Christmas! Yes, the movie is a little weird (just like Tim Burton!) but it's great

Yay hope you got on Radiator Springs Racers!

All of our breakfasts were just some cereal and juice in our room, so you won't be hearing much about breakfast. I knew that certain restaurants could do gluten-free pancakes, but I could not find out if they could do them dairy-free as well. Anyway, today was our first time at the (new) California Adventure. When we were last there in 2009, it was still Disney's California Adventure, there were walls all over Paradise Pier, and the lagoon had no water in it.

California Adventure opened at 8:00 for Disneyland hotel guests, and were there about 10 minutes before opening. We sort of walked fast through Buena Vista Street, but we'd spend more time there later (I have no idea how they made a street out of the old entrance!). Our first stop was Cars Land. I like "Cars", but it is not a favorite movie of mine. But, I really liked Cars Land. Without sounding like a commercial, you really feel like you are walking in Radiator Springs. I had no idea what to expect from Radiator Springs Racers, but we really liked it (I think we were in the losing car). We got a 5X7 and 4 wallet size pictures for free (part of our AAA package), and went to Luigi's Flying Tires. Once we got the hang of it, it was fun. By now, the park would open to everyone else so it was time to get our World of Color Fastpasses for the 9:00 show. Next was Paradise Pier. It looked great, but I think it could have changed a bit more than it did. We loved seeing Cars Land from Mickey's Fun Wheel (non-swinging) and all four Disneyland mountains from the top of the wheel. My sister went on California Screamin' (not for me), Goofy's Sky School (again, could have been more different but the signs in the waiting area were funny), and The Little Mermaid. We got Fastpasses for Soarin' over California, went on the Monsters Inc. ride, then spent more time in Buena Vista Street. Just like Cars Land, I really liked how Buena Vista Street felt. It was a really great atmosphere, it's hard to put into words. We used one of our 20% discounts at Elias and Company, used our Soarin' Fastpasses, and it was time for lunch.

Lunch

Again, we ate at two different restaurants. I went to the Fidler Fifer and Practical Cafe for mine. When I got there, I saw a lot of coffee on the menu, but no lunches. So, I asked for help and it seems the lunch items are all prepackaged. I wasn't thrilled by that, but I got on line anyway and asked for a chef. Long story short, I was able to have their turkey salad with the croutons left off. I carried that over to the Taste Pilot's Grill where my sister got a chicken sandwich. This time, the chef told her she could have the bun, so that was nice. My salad was very good, I think I was just a little surprised by seeing a menu full of coffee and the lunch items were all pre-made. We ate outside and watched monorails go past Soarin'. Taste Pilot's had the snowflake Rice Krispy treat that I had seen the day before, and I got one of those too.

Up next - the anticipation builds for our first time seeing World of Color!

You got a lot of rides done before lunch. Excellent!:thumbsup2

Yeah, that Cafe should just change the name to Starbucks since that's pretty much all it is. All coffee, pastries and very minimal pre-packaged lunch options. Glad your DS was able to find something at Taste Pilot's. Love that place!

Your TR title caught my eye and I'm surprised as it seems you were able to talk to chefs every time. My DD4 has peanut and fish allergies and when we took her in 2013, the chefs only came out once (at Goofy's Kitchen) and just told me to stay away from the PBJ pizza. They didn't do anything special, even though I had been told on the phone they should prepare fresh food for my DD because of cross-contamination concerns. Oh well, she didn't have any reactions and I just didn't let her have any pizza in case someone used the same serving ware on the PBJ and regular pizzas.

At Ariel's Grotto and Minnie's, no one came out from the kitchen as the server just told us there weren't any PB or fish issues. But your sister's allergies sound more difficult to "see" compared to my DD's so I'm glad they actually came out to talk to her.

Looking forward to reading more!

Thank you for reading, smiles33.

It may just depend on the severity of the allergy. In some cases, more so at Walt Disney World than Disneyland, I probably could just order "normally", but I always ask for a chef in case an ingredient has changed. We've been surprised before with things that had dairy in it that we would otherwise have thought were safe, so we make it a point to always ask first.

Thanks, I have to agree with your post. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I really don't care about the current Starbucks "craze". Don't get me wrong, though - my meal was good.

We did get a lot done before lunch. I always say that Disney trips with me aren't very relaxing!

Thanks again for following!

Dec 13, 2013 Afternoon

We left California Adventure after lunch and spent the afternoon exploring the Disneyland Hotel. There's a lot of nice displays off the lobby, like celebrity visits through the years and historical pictures of the Disneyland Hotel. There was also a huge gingerbread castle. Then, Goofy came up to us just outside Goofy's Kitchen! We took a picture with him.

We had a pretty big night planned. It started back at California Adventure, before sunset, so we could see the neon lights get turned at Cars Land. That was really, really nice and I think I like the Cars Land atmosphere more at night that during the day. Next we saw a more traditional lighting, the Buena Vista Street Christmas tree. Here's where we got a little spoiled by how easy park hopping was. We went to Disneyland just before the Christmas Fantasy Parade started, at 5:30. We loved this parade, especially the marching toy soldiers and skating snowflakes. Right after the parade, we returned to California Adventure to see "Aladdin". We absolutely love this show! We love the songs, the magic carpet, and of course, the Genie. Now, I can only take so many reality TV jokes, but he said that he was trapped in his lamp for 10,000 years, about how long it takes to log onto the healthcare website. He also said that he can not bring people back from the dead, but he brought Robin Williams back to TV! I wish I remembered more of what he said. But, now it's time for dinner at Cars Land.

Dinner

My sister wanted to see if she could have one of the cone things at the Cozy Cone. But, she was told that the breadcone has some dairy in it. She was a bit disappointed by that. I had already planned on eating at Flo's V8 Cafe, so that was our next stop. We did better here. In fact, the chef who spoke to my sister at the Cozy Cone helped us at Flo's as well. We both got the turkey platter, mine with peas, carrots and mashed potatoes (very good), and my sister's with pineapple (very good). I wanted to eat outside, but it was a bit cold. But, they were playing a lot of great 1960's Motown music which was fun hearing. After dinner, I went back to the Cozy Cone and got chocolate/vanilla ice cream covered in hard chocolate - it was as good as it sounds. I had it in a cup since I could not have the cone.

Evening

I brought my ice cream to the World of Color - Winter Dreams blue viewing area, and we saw the 9:00 show. I have to admit that I thought the virtual choir was a bit weird at first, but I really started liking it by the third time we saw the show! We loved the "Let it Go" part, the little green men doing the mushroom dance from "Fantasia", and we were really surprised by all the lights on Mickey's Fun Wheel. At the end of the show, giant snowflakes started appearing in the sky - we were fascinated by that! Next we went to Toy Story Midway Mania and expected to walk right on. Actually, we waited about 30 minutes and my sister beat me. We left California Adventure for the night, but we decided to end the day at Disneyland and saw "Captain EO". We grew up seeing it at Epcot, but it was almost like seeing it for the first time. We ended the day with a monorail trip to Downtown Disney, and a short walk to our hotel.

Up next - Disneyland at 7:00am!

I love seeing Aladdin! We don't see it all the time, but every time, the genie has some new current jokes. Love the jokes he said at your showing! :rotfl:

Flo's Cafe is very good! I've had Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner there now and everything is great and so is the atmosphere both inside and out. If the weather's nice, sitting outside is fun.

I should watch the Winter show of WoC on Youtube. I bet it was great! WoC is my absolute favorite show out of all 6 parks. Aside from the standing that is. The music is phenomenal!

Saturday, December 14, 2013

We were up bright and early to be at Disneyland for their Extra Magic Hours opening time of 7:00. According to the clock on the Main Street train station we arrived just after 6:45. Our morning would be spent entirely at Disneyland. It was our third day, and we still hadn't been on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride or Space Mountain. But, that would change soon. Our first stop was the Matterhorn (left side). We liked the new (for us) seating in the bobsleds. Before the park opened to everyone else, we went to "it's a small world holiday". We knew this would be wonderful, but we had no idea how wonderful it would be! I thought I was going crazy when I started smelling gingerbread! And, we were able to practically walk on since it was so early. We went to more Fantasyland and Tomorrowland rides, including the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage (we rode on Scout), and the Storybook Land Canal Boats. I build scale models as a hobby, so I really appreciate all the details here. Once the park opened, it got crowded fast. We waited at least a half-hour for the Jingle Cruise. I thought it was a little weird. It was funny though when the skipper said that Indiana Jones doesn't like New Year's Eve because after the ball drops, it chases him! We saw a "Tangled" stage show at the new Fantasy Faire area. It was sort of a Renaissance re-telling of the story. It was really good. We also went to the Enchanted Tiki Room. We had a lunch reservation at the Grand Californian's Storyteller's Cafe, so we left around noon. First, we went to the World of Disney to use another of our 20% shopping discounts. I got two fantastic ornaments - Mickey dressed as Santa standing in front of Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle, and another of Mickey holding a gold Disneyland "D" - this one went on my Mickey shelf because it's too nice to see just once a year!

Lunch

We had a good experience at the Storyteller's Cafe in the past, and we did again during this trip. The chef came to our table, and was really helpful. We both got chicken sandwiches, my sister's plain and on sourdough and mine marinated in tomato, and with caramelized onions and jack cheese. The chef advised against me having French fries, though. I don't know if there is a cross contamination issue or an ingredient, but I've never reacted to Disney French fries anywhere. I got the fries substituted for fruit (honeydew, grapes, and cantaloupe), and I had a few of my sister's fries anyway. For dessert, my sister was offered sorbet which would have been safe for her, but she didn't like the flavors. I got a gluten-free brownie (very warm) with vanilla ice cream.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the Disneyland Hotel's monorail pool. I am not a good swimmer, so waterslides that I can go on are few and far between. The Disneyland Hotel now has Monorail Red and Blue slides. The red one ends in a traditional pool, but the blue one ends in just a flooded lane. So, I went on it three times!

Up next - Disneyland evening (some very good, some not as good).
