I've never been to WDW, but I would assume DLR is your best option as your on the West Coast. Flights to east are way more, last year was our first family trip and I went back and forth between the two parks and the deciding factor was 4 return flights from Calgary to LA was $1400 through Westjet and to Orlando it was $2900.....$1500 difference went a long way.
Enjoy the planning....I loved that part, making the plans then getting everyone excited about the upcoming trip.

We have time shifting on our tv so I see a lot of BC television and they have been promoting for Disneyland a deal for adults for the price of children right now. You may want to look into that too.

If you're weighing WDW and DL, and you're thinking budget trip, may I suggest going to DL.

Alaska Air sometimes have deals to Orlando. In March 2005, we went to WDW instead of DL because we found a return non-stop flight from SEATAC to Orlando for only $250 USD -- it was the red eye. (Compare that to return flights from YVR to LAX for $350 USD during those same dates!) But you have to keep monitoring their specials. To sweeten the deal, I got a moderate WDW resort (POR) for a rate of $105/night (definitely better to stay on-site at WDW because of the hugeness of the place).

But it was the passes that got us... WDW passes are more expensive than DL passes. You can choose not to have a hopper or a water park option and save some money. But then, your kids are of the older ages that they would certainly enjoy the water parks. And since you travelled so far, it is better that you have the hopper option so if one park gets too crowded, you have the option to hop over to a less crowded park. (Yes, my family likes to maximize our park time!)

That WDW trip cost our family of 4 easily ~$5500 after flights, accommodations, food, passes, and souvenirs.

Compare that to a DL trip cost of ~$2500 for a family of 4. Of course, we used Priceline.com for our hotel room, as it is not necessary to stay at a Disney resort when you're in DL.

It's also not as busy at DLR in the Spring as WDW. The temperature is spring-like rather than bathing suit season. With the exception of course of the week before and after Easter where locals take it by storm. (most local school boards give those weeks as their spring breaks) Spring is in April this year. We're going the first week of March which is quiet time. The hours are shorter though (10-6 for DCA) and there are quite a few refurbishments. Check out the schedule on the main site:

http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/home/home?name=HomePage

And, yes, the passes were way cheaper! A 5-day hopper is $159US through to the end of April (for Adults or children, same price). :thumbsup2 I ordered from Disneyland online and I think the shipping to Canada was $20 per order, but it was couriered in a couple days!

Another "package" site that is recommended on the DLR board is getaway. They often have hotel stay bonuses. ie. stay 3 night, fourth night is free.

Come on over to the Disneyland board for more info. There are quite a few west-coast Cdns there that can be more specific with deals at your end.:)

Being that you’re from BC the best deals your going to see is fro Disneyland. I personally think Disney world is better because it has a lot more to offer! Some people will say I am wrong but it's a personal opinion.

I drove by a co-op travel here in Calgary and they had some good deals for Family of four. Around 1500-2000 which included everything, Hotel, flight tickets, food ... all you would need is spending money.

You might want to check a Co-op travel near you or CAA if you have a membership!

If it was me i would go to disney would, but i am just nuts and like waisting money

Just make sure everyone has there passports ahead of time as if you need one and haven't applied yet, it might be iffy!!

I also preferred WDW over DL but there is a big difference in price. There is a lot more to do at WDW and your kids would probably love the water parks. I live in Kamloops, BC and we have always found it quite a bit cheaper to fly out of Seattle. Our latest trip was in Oct 2006. I got a good deal on a flight using Expedia.com. At one point the price was $286 Cdn return but I dragged my heels a bit and we had to pay about $380. We flew on the redeye for the first 3 trips as it allowed us to drive in the morning to Seattle and then catch the plane, skipping one night's hotel. Of course, I don't sleep on the plane so it was a bit rough. Because there were 5 of us, we had to stay in a moderate but I would not hesitate to stay in the AllStars to save some money. I packed snacks from home (went to Costco and got granola bars, trail mix, etc. ) We almost always ate counter service. This last trip we hit the jackpot with a low airfare plus free dining for 10 days. Good luck. Make sure to get a quote for flying out of Seattle as opposed to Vancouver. The plus also is that you have already cleared customs.:thumbsup2

I like 'em both.

If this is your first time in either of the parks, then I'd pick Disneyland because of the lower cost and the fact that you're already on the west coast. While WDW is the larger of the parks, you'll still have fun at Disneyland AND you won't have WDW to compare to since you haven't been there before. DL is smaller but as long as you can get yourself to Anaheim, you don't need a car and you don't have to stay onsite ($$$). You can stay at a cheaper hotel nearby and walk to the park or take a cheap shuttle (ART = Anaheim Resort Transit..I think). Tons of restaurants just outside the gates if you don't want to eat inside and want to be a bit more frugal.

The flight will be cheaper but more importantly, since you'll be travelling with a bunch of kiddies is that it'll be a shorter flight too.

March/April is not offpeak season at WDW. It is at DLR. That being said, if you are planning for this year, hotels are filling fast.

You should be able to get a nice hotel/motel walking distance to the Disneyland resort for WELL under $100/night. I've heard of people getting the entertainment rate of $59/night at the HoJos. Passes are $159, plus $20 shipping. Shuttle from the airport, aprox. $25/person to and from. plus airfaire.

Cost:
Hotel for 5 nights: $500 (usually can get one night free promotion -- $400)
Passes for 5 days: $497
Shuttle: $75
Airfaire: ? not familiar with west coast cheap fares

Total without promotions: $1072 USD (plus airfare)

How long does it take you to drive to seattle? I live in Vernon.I would love to leave from Kelowna when we go to WDW,but its costs so much more.

A few weeks ago, I looked into how much it would cost for my single friend, with her two boys (13, 10) for WDW. I found an excellent flight on Expedia from Calgary, for $424, Thursday Mar 29-Friday APril 6. Looking today for this same dates: Vancouver it's just over $600, from Seattle it's $417 a person.

She had a budget of $3,000.
Although, researching it out it still would cost her $3,000 to get there, stay at a hotel (take a town car to the hotel, and rely on shuttles) and park tickets. This only gave her less than 300 for food. She also had the ability to cash in some airmiles for a free pass to the WDW park for 5 days.

I would say the best deal you will get in WDW is to go in January! Hotels are really cheap, and it's is cheaper in general than California.

From my past experience. CAA, has the cheapest tickets for Disneyland, for Disneyworld, it's better to go through the mousesavers site, and buy from a site in Florida like mapleleaftickets, or the other 2 that are listed there.

I am a family of 6 in total. We flew two years ago to Disneyland, and got 6 free flight through airmiles by having the bank of montreal mastercard through westjet. I did consider driving that year, but it was worth our sanity...we stayed at a hotel, and it cost us $4-5 for a week. When in California, you could stay at Hilton -Homewood Suites (it can sleep up to six) Pull out couch, 2 beds, you get a kitchen, and from Mon-Thurs they have free dinner, and the rest of the week they offer free breakfast.

For our trip to DisneyWorld this year, I got 4 free flights. I also went a few years ago, with 2 of our children, and got 2 free flights. I've only done this well in getting airmiles, since I switched to the westjet mastercard. Of course, you pay for the taxes, and that will add up.

Rent a Car- Be around $200--parking will be get add up! and tolls too Go to the Beach -Free
Kennedy Space Center $122 Canadian Gatorland
Sea World (apply southwest airlines card...printed it...save 20% off admission)

Go to Disneyland. It is much more manageable and much cheaper than Disney World.
You can stay off-site and still walk to the parks, which is not possible at WDW.
Go to a Flight Centre travel agency. They are offering great deals on packages right now. Flights, transfers from the airport and hotel. They can also get you the adults pay kids tickets. February will be less crowded than March/April. If you wait until fall, September and October are great times to go as well, but the deals on those packages probably won't be out until April.

How long does it take you to drive to seattle? I live in Vernon.I would love to leave from Kelowna when we go to WDW,but its costs so much more.

Mapping software says, 6 hours to Seattle or 5.5 to Spokane. There are discount airlines that fly out of both. If money is an issue, I suspect that the drive will be worth it for a family of 6.

OP--I've never been to DL but if it's a first trip the finances would seem to support DL over WDW. If your dates aren't fixed and you end up deciding that WDW is where you want to be you could wait for late August--rumour mill has free dining returning.

From Surrey, I would definitely drive to Seattle for cheaper airfare (compare fares after taxes since this is where the biggest differences are seen).

The "everybody pays the kids rate" is the best deal all year. It goes until April26th. The 5-day hopper is $159US. After April 26th, DL online has discounted prices as follows: $189 for Adult, $159 for Child. These are only the online prices. Regular gate passes are $229 Adult and $199 Child.

I agree with "RoyalCanadian" that if your time online is limited and you can't visit the official sites and hotel sites for quotes, your best bet is to go see a Travel Agent and let them figure out the cheapest time & method for your trip.

Have you considered talking to a travel agent to get the actual pricing? They will be able to give you up-to-date prices.

That is what I was thinking. Trying to plan a vacation for seven people with limited pc use is too difficult. If you have CAA go to a local office and they can help you. If not try the Flight Centre (In a lot of malls). They have very competetive packages.
