Disneyland v. Disney World Early March

Just got an email about the hotel discounts at Disneyland and thinking about switching our short 4 days trip in March from Disney World to Disneyland. Anything I should know about Disneyland that counsels against the change? We've been to both multiple times and Disneyland seems easier for a short trip. Thanks in advance.

Where would you be staying at WDW versus DL? What specific dates in March?
March 5-8. Paradise Pier in Disneyland or Port Orleans in Disney World. Everyone is interested in Star Wars land, but Epcot and Animal Kingdom aren't necessarily deciding factors.

I will wholeheartedly recommend Disneyland over WDW. But there is NO WAY I could in good conscience recommend Paradise Pier hotel.
This is why I posted! What's wrong with Paradise Pier? As I said we've been to DL a number of times but have never stayed at a DL resort. Most of our visits were when we lived in California. I did see that they don't currently have any open restaurants.

Almost the same time as us. We will be there 3/6-3/9 at the DLH. We feel the same way in that Epcot and Animal Kingdom aren’t big draws for us either. We chose that week as our school district has spring break much earlier than just about everyone else in the country, thus the crowd level shouldn’t be too bad.
Another big advantage for DL based on my research is that if you plan on using Genie plus and ILL, you will experience much shorter lines than at WDW. The reason being is that DL caters to so many locals who are season pass holders but don’t feel the need to pay extra for those perks. Again this is just based on what I am reading and hearing on this and other boards and can’t substantiate as of yet. Lol

It should also be noted the Monorail is scheduled to return to service on 3/7 (fingers crossed) which will make for a much shorter walk when taking breaks in the afternoon. So that’s another plus since your staying at the Paradise Pier.
Since it’s a shorter four day visit, I think DL over WDW is a no-brainer.

It's just not worth even half of what they charge for a room there. It's in need of a DRASTIC refurbishment/reimagining. The lack of food is a serious issue and really should not be discounted. There is literally NO food options right now. If you are absolutely hell bent on staying on property, at least pick the Disneyland Hotel, even though the food situation there isn't a whole lot better at the moment. If you are willing to do the walk from Paradise Pier, look into the brand new Westin at the corner of Katella and Disneyland drive. Literally one block away. You will get a far nicer room for less and a full service hotel with plenty of dining and amenities.

Also you may want to take a look at the last few posts on the “return of the villain after dark” thread for some very helpfully info on how to save money at the DLH and GCH during your week of stay. 😉

Thanks! Disneyland Hotel isn't available with the current discount, so it's $600+ for the Grand Californian or Paradise Pier for $400, or offsite, and we've done offsite many times and this time prefer a Disney hotel. Might just stick with Port Orleans at Disney World for the $370 or so a night we are paying. Port Orleans really is an awesome resort. Maybe the question is whether we pay $600 a night for Grand Californian, $600 a night for Animal Kingdom Lodge, or $370 a night for Port Orleans.

How is the transportation system at Port Orleans? My biggest complaint with WDW resorts outside of the highest end ones is that the transportation is such a pain.

The GCH is by far the most convenient hotel of either resort. If Disneyland would start treating the Monorail like a transportation system and not an attraction, I would pay to stay at the GCH every single time. The proximity to DCA is unparalleled and if they could just maintain those trains running all day long, it would keep the DCA and DLH at 100% capacity year round.

If you want the full Disney bubble stick with WDW for now. I agree with PP that there is literally zero reason to stay PPH right now. Disneyland doesn’t even have Extra Hours for hotel guests at this time, WDW might only do 30 mins but at least it’s something.

Transportation from Port Orleans is so-so. Not great, not terrible. But that's why I'm inclined to visit Disneyland for a short trip. I don't have to spend 5-10 minutes walking to a bus stop, then 5-20 minutes waiting for a bus, then another 5-20 minutes riding to a park. I can just spend 5 minutes walking to a park.

Yep, that’s my biggest complaint about WDW and why I would personally take the Pleasure Pier. It’s really not that much more than the JW Marriott and Westin. The views from the high facing floors looking out at DCA are actually the best views of the three parks. I personally would complain about the lack of on site restaurants when you check in and the fact that there still not doing early mornings and see if you can get an upgrade to the club level. My wife hates it when I complain but it usually works. Back when they gave Pleasure Pier guests a private entrance into DCA, it was actually a damn good bargain.

Are they even doing club level at the PPH right now? Where is the food coming from since none of the restaurants have staff?

SMH. You couldn't pay ME $400 to stay at PPH.

I'd do GCH for $600 over AKL for $600. I wouldn't ever pay almost $400 for Port Orleans. That's insane.

I don’t know if they are. I know that DLH and GCA are. The more I think about it, I think you’re right. I wouldn’t stay at PPH with no on site dining especially since it’s still a pretty good walk to DD. If their cutting that much out, who knows what else they are skimping on. It’s been many, many years since I last stayed there. The private entrance into DCA was pretty sweet. You would think they could at least bring that back.

March 4th weekend is Mini-Gay Days, their website has a link for booking at DLH and GCH. That might be why there are not discounts offered for the Disneyland hotel.

Here is also what is happening in March.

Even if Paradise Pier was only $100 a night, I'd rather stay off-site. It's absolutely not worth the price that Disney charges for it, especially when they don't have the character breakfast. The Disneyland Hotel and Grand Californian are much better hotels and even then, I'd rather pay more to stay at the Westin or JW Marriott over any of the Disney properties. Given that the Westin and JW Marriott are actually priced lower than the Disney hotels, I'm not picking any Disney hotel any time soon.

Go wherever you’d rather go. If crowds/lines are important to you from what I’ve observed based on last week at Disneyland and watching WDW vlogs is that genie+ (idk if you were planning on buying that) is way better if you buy it at Disneyland because they give a lot more lightning lanes out but if you’re not buying it WDW might be better since the standby lines probably move quicker. The standby lines at Disneyland weren’t that bad but they moved really slow sometimes when lightning lane got super backed up. Especially for Space and Guardians
