Disneyland Resort Workers Are...

It's the latest tactic of Unite Here, the union that has had trouble for years with DL and has taken (in my opinion) the low road many a time to try to get Disney to accede to the union's demands.

These aren't the "normal" employees.

I believe that in order to sue it has to be on the behalf of someone who can prove they were harmed by this if its ruled it doesn't violate state law. Sounds like nobody has come forward as such.

It just doesn't seem like something ANY company would do, have their worker ID cards scan as their SSN?? Most companies use an employee number not your SSN

Heck, the military prints your SSN right there on the card next to your picture. Also, my military ID has my husband's SSN on the front as well. That's why it's such a big deal if someone loses a military ID. With a name, SSN, and date of birth, finding a lost military ID would be an identity thief's jackpot.

When I was at a University here in California in the late 90's, my ssn was right on my student ID right out there for anyone to see. And it was my student number, so I was giving it out a lot.

you use your ss number..

Wow, I didn't realize that. I found a military ID on the floor of the locker room at the Y a few months ago, and stood around for about 20 minutes trying to match up face to picture. Finally I left a note near where I found it, and I turned it into the front desk. Felt it was too important to just leave there, and now I'm extra-glad I did!

Yes. They have since changed their policy and are phasing out those types of ID's, but it isn't scheduled to be finished until 2012. People that get their ID's now have a version that blocks out numbers, but I have an older ID that doesn't expire until 2012 and they are only giving the new cards out after an old one expires.

Saints with Ears. . .IMHO. Thanks, CMs!!!!

They're sue-happy because they want to protect their identity? There are recent laws that have been put in place that prohibit, for example, health insurance companies, from using your SSN as your id number due to privacy protection. This is a case of identity protection. Identity fraud is a HUGE issue.

I think saying Disney Cast Members are "some of the MOST sue-happy people" is a bit extreme.

How would you like your SSN available for others to steal?

Yeah, I would be inclined to sue if an issue as serious as identity theft was a risk and the company I worked for wasn't taking steps to solve the problem. I hope that Disney will step it up and protect the CMs who make Disneyland such an awesome place! :)

I don't fault them for wanting to protect their identities... In this day and age ya just cant be too careful... I wonder though, if they tried to work it out with management before filing a lawsuit... Sometimes that is a little more effective! Not only that, but now everyone knows that there is valuable data embedded in the barcodes on these employees id's! So who is more at fault? Disney for putting the data on the card, or the Union for telling everyone where the data is?

Exactly!! Now everyone freakin' knows. Why make it public unless you wanted some major attention?? Plus why did it take them so long to say something to Disney before? I mean, is this a new change or are they the same ID's they've had the last few years.

Are they phasing them out for MMs too? I did get a new ID recently, and my SSN is X'd out, but DH's is still on full display.

ETA: Pretty much the whole time i was in college, my Student ID # was my SSN. They changed it eventually, but employers using it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Hey you! I was thinking about you just a few days ago! I'm not sure what new people are getting right now. DH hasn't gotten a new ID in a few years (even though he's been promoted...oops lol), so he still has the old one. The first step started in late 2008 phasing it out for dependents, then late 2009/early 2010 they were supposed to start with the MM's, and then by 2012 they were supposed to make it so that when you scan the ID their SSN doesn't show up. Can't remember where I read it, might have been military.com. I remember they were saying it was a big deal because when kids would lose their cards it was hard to catch identity theft in a timely manner because, well, not many parents check their 10 year old's credit reports.

Sorry for the threadjack ;)

After 9/11 (and for a few years after) pretty much everyone had their ids on a lanyard (at WDW at least) we had to show them everywhere. Once we were onstage we put them away but managers kept them out - not sure if this has changed - we all knew our info was in that barcode but did not think there would be technology out there that could read it so easily :confused3

Hey you! I was thinking about you just a few days ago!

It's always nice to run into you here :D I have such Disney fever right now...I'd really love to head to DLR in the near future! Sadly, we really should save the money...but I can't tell you how tempted I am to say "just this once" for a spontaneous trip!!

The ID thing is just so weird...hopefully someday all employers will stop using SSN's as employee IDs!

I never really thought it would be such a huge problem... i mean, i think my driver's license is more exposed to identify theft than my Disney ID... but thats just me...

That a good point about your DL. The thing that is a person's best identifier and the hardest to steal is one's signature. I think almost every state has added this to their DLs now.
