has anyone recently attempted to get a ride up front on the tender on one of the two engines that can accommodate riders?

I have done this many times with my wife and also with my kids over the years. Just wondering if it is still available for the asking.

I believe you can ask to ride with the engineer or something like that.

My 2 year old son would LOVE that. He is obsessed with Thomas & anything to do with trains!

yes, you always need to ask one of the conductors (usually the head conductor) he checks with the engineers on the appropriate train. It is only offered on IIRC 2 trains....
You must get on at the Main Street Station, and you must get off after one trip around the park at the Main Street Station.
If the train is stopping at New Orleans Square station and taking on water, you can not ride that trip...may have to wait until next time around.

have been doing this for years...

Just wondering if it is still being done, since things change from one trip to the next.

you sure get lots of looks and questions after you get off, after riding up front.;)
Even my daughters have always enjoyed this. It is something special that most folks just don't know about...even die hard Disney fanatics:rolleyes1

IIRC the two engines that you can ride up front on are the E.P. Ripley and the C.K. Holliday, which were the first two Disneyland Engines and were constructed at the Park...the other 3 engines were former work horses at various railroads around the country in the early 1900's.
they were purchased by Disney and rebuilt, converted for use at the Park...now they all burn left over "french fry" oil... :)

I don't know how recently you mean, but my 6 year old and I did this mid January. It was a huge treat for us both.

DanT-

What a cool experience! By chance, do you know how many people it can accommodate? Something similar in size to the wheelhouse on the Mark Twain?

Thanks for sharing your special secret! :thumbsup2

two adult size folks or one adult and two children...
One of seats is larger than the other but I don't recall which is the larger of the two...

one year we were there we rode up front at least 3 or 4 times during the 3 days we were there.
we rode to New Orleans Square and then had a change of crew.
Got two young ladies that were part of the training crew, and they were also the relief crew...
we got stuck near Toon Town due to the 50 year aniversary parade during the day...sat on the tracks for about 10+ minutes..
Was very interesting talking to the ladies during that time...they were very nice and very informative about their jobs and the operation of the locomotives.
Both of them had started in other positions in the park...one at Indy and one started as a conductor...
as openings occur they were able to move to the train...

so has anyone done this in the last month or so...
:confused3
