Sadly I think FL at MK is totally lacking in style and ambiance, and it was like this even before the construction walls. New FL has not impressed me yet, maybe the mine train will help?
Before Disneyland remodeled their Fantasyland (1983), parts of it were similar to MK. Thirty years later, DL's Fantasyland has a charm that is unmatched by MK (even post-expansion). I've been to both parks many times. Disneyland wins hands-down, every time.
Long time Disneyland goer and more recent WDW goer and it's hands down Disneyland for me. While MK has a lot of the same rides and shops, for me it lacks the theming and magical feeling to it. The first time I went to MK's Fantasyland, I was so underwhelmed that I felt like maybe I'd made a mistake going to WDW at all. There was no ambiance! It felt a lot like going to a cheap theme park, especially in the stroller areas because it was huge swaths of pavement with very little greenery or scenery. That said, it's grown on me some, but it comes nowhere close to DL for me and that's not just nostalgia talking, I don't think.
~I heard that you can see the freeway from Splash Mountain at Disneyland. I really love the Disney bubble at WDW. But, I've heard Disneyland is the best of the two. I don't care for the small castle either but Disneyland still has Toon Town. It seems like Disneyland is better than MK but I will always choose WDW overall.
MK's fantasyland really can't hold a candle to Disneyland's. I love so many of the attractions that can only be found in Disneyland. And it definitely has a certain charm that MK lacks.
