Disneyland Half Marathon 2024

If you are doing the 5k, then I would definitely add intervals. The race is still about 3 months away, and so to me- it would be very boring to just run/jog a couple miles at the same pace every day. Not to mention you won't really see much benefit of doing that after a while. If you do intervals and you just got a 38 minute 5k, those intervals will easily get you down and you'll beat your 37:53 PR probably by a lot. Intervals should really only be done about once a week so you have time to recover. So I would pick an interval day- like say Tuesdays- and the first time just do something basic like sprint 20 seconds, jog two minutes. Do that maybe 6 times. Then next week try going 30 seconds with maybe 1:45 rest. See what works for you. But definitely do them if you want a faster time-- as they say if you want to run fast- then you have to train fast. If your goal is just to finish then you don't really need to do them. A couple weeks before the race stop doing them so again youre well rested/ tapered for the race.

Now if you are running the 10 k or half marathon, I wouldn't throw intervals into the mix since you are having a hard time just completing 2.5 miles, your training goal should be to first be able to complete a lot more miles before doing intervals, but again if you're doing the 5k, I would start right away and gradually bump it up based on how you feel. But with intervals, definitely warm up and cool down before and after, so maybe jog a mile, do a mile of intervals/rest/ and then cool down a mile -- for example, or you will risk injury. Probably a good idea to stretch as well before and / or afterwards.
It sounds like you're advising @AZMermaid to add some high intensity interval training (HIIT) to their training. I could be wrong, but my interpretation of the original post was that it was suggesting that they were considering moving to Galloway-style run/walk intervals. Very different propositions.

Blah on no transportation and I doubt the traffic hassle is worth driving from GCH. Still hoping the Grand entrance to DTD is open vs only the ends. Funny to be worried about a few extra steps while running a half marathon though haha!

I did a local 5K Saturday. 38 flat. My 40s PR is 37:53 so I was soooo close! It was hot coming back the last mile or so. Not sure what the temp was at that time but I’d guess about 80. We bumped back up to 100-105 this week.

Which leads me to my decision I need to make soon. Intervals or not. I’ve never run intervals before but I’m thinking of trying them. I’m still having such a hard time running consistently over 2.5 miles. But I also think it’s a lot mental.

Today we got the date for my 13 year old sons 3rd ever field trip- first one since third grade when Covid hit. They are going to iFly…. Indoor skydiving. I know hes reallllllly excited for this. It’s January 12. I’m so sad for him. DH is like eh, he’s going to Disneyland, he’s fine. But I’m also like he’s been to Disneyland many more times than field trips- 5 days since Covid, probably 20 in his life- so it’s a big deal to him. I havent told him yet. He’s running the 10K so staying home doesn’t really work. I looked at flights. We could do frontier for $34 each! But it’s really really tight with the timeline. Basically he'd be back at school at 1:50, so let’s say checked out by 2. The airport is 30 min away and the flight leaves at 3:35. We could send all our stuff with DH and DD So frontier would work… but if it’s gets cancelled or something…. Eek. I alsomthought We could drive afterwards. With the time change we’d get there around 7. Expo closes at 8. But again one bad traffic jam and we are toast. I think I know hes gotta skip the field trip, but I’m so sad for him. This is his only planned day to miss and he has perfect attendance so far! Total first world problem i know!
I apologize if you meant run/walk intervals. I just saw intervals and assumed you meant running intervals- run/walk I don't know too much about. I know Galloway likes them and I know for some people they can actually achieve a faster race time with run/walk than just running the whole time.

Me too! But different start/end dates and we will decide based on when we actually decide to get flights.
I have two booked also! And one is through rented points so 100% that's the one we are staying at, but I always get nervous about canceling my back up.

I have two off-site hotels booked for 1/11 that I need to cancel. I had originally decided to go cheap for that one extra night after I got the 5K through my charity (I've had PP booked 1/12-1/15 since February), but then my TA alerted me to a room at the new Villas at DLH on 1/11 that was available and I just couldn't help myself. It's so expensive but decided to splurge for the one night at the new hotel. Ugh, Disney......

One time, I had 4 hotels down Harbor all booked, and was looking to see if prices were going to go down. Nope. They only went up and up. I cancelled 3 of them before rD said that the 2 longer races will be on Disney Way. So I made out like a bandit! :D

The prices for the hotels on Disney Way also skyrocketed when that announcement came.

I did mean run/ walk but I appreciate your advice nonetheless! after this race, I will work some on speed!

They released opening date for Pixar place... Jan 30th so a little after our run for everyone else who is staying there with us. I am hoping it will mostly be done. It look like all the food will be done by then at least since the Great maple is coming in by Nov.

I would hope that all of the rooms are refurbished by race weekend, but I had my TA request one just in case. I hope at least the lobby is done. I really want to see the Pixar ball/lamp with the hanging characters.

Same! I requested a refurbished room too. Maybe we get the unofficially soft opening things where basically everything is open they just wait a bit to get all the kinks out.

For those traveling with young kids don’t forget the discounted kids prices are on sale today. You can buy 1-3 day tickets and have the option to add on hopper and G+.

To everyone who has multiple reservations, please consider posting them here before you cancel. You might be able to coordinate transferring it to someone who would be thrilled to use it.

Thanks!
This is a good idea. I have one for 2 Queen Beds at Hotel Lulu (BW Premier) and one for a Deluxe 2 Queen Beds at Desert Palms that I will be dropping here soon. I am not sure if either are sold out but I'm happy to try to coordinate a cancellation if it helps someone get a room.

ETA: do hotels allow you to transfer reservations (i.e. change the main person on it)? I would imagine the rates have gone up since I booked this in August.

I know Hyatt will let you transfer the reservation to another guest. I've had to do it before with them and it wasn't a problem. Not sure about other chains.

Are you willing to share dates and prices?

I don't know if they will allow transfers (some do, some don't), but it can't hurt to ask.

Thanks!

*Facepalm* I just remembered that I only booked those hotels for one night on 1/11 after I added the 5K and needed to come in a day earlier. So, they probably aren't much use to anyone.

I know previously there were posts regarding the Disneyland child ticket offer that will take place over Race weekend in January. I had previously was purchased my tickets from getaway today and was definitely bummed to miss out on the deal. Well, I called them and they were able to issue me a refund and transfer my tickets to the new discounted tickets! I had to make new park reservations (luckily that Jan 14 DCA opened back up) but totally worth the $$$
