At 7 in the morning, the sun was already out shining as bright as can be. I knew then and there it was going to be a scorcher of a day. However, it was my birthday and I wasn't going to let a little heat stop me from having a good time!
My mom, sister and I got on the freeway at around 10 a.m. We were to meet up with my aunt and uncle at the Blue Bayou for lunch at 11:50. I first wanted to stop at City Hall to pick up a birthday sticker and do the special call from a Disney character on the Birthday Phone. From where we were driving from, it's about an hour and a half to get to Anaheim. We'd make it...barely!
We parked in the Lion King parking lot by taking Harbor Blvd. and as soon as I stepped out of the car, the heat instantly hit me! I wore a purple tank top and shorts and was glad I applied sunscreen! The three of us headed for the tram to begin a very long (and hot!) day at the Happiest Place on Earth!
I told my mom and sister that we needed to go through the underpass on the left side to reach City Hall. After the lady scanned my Premium card at the gate, I heard a strange sparkling sound other than a simple whistle, almost like a Tinker Bell sound! The girl smiled and said, "Oh, Happy Birthday, Sabrina!" I guess with the passports, they know EVERYTHING about you!
As we headed toward the underpass on the left side, we noticed a very familiar-looking couple browsing the nearby souvenir stand. It was my aunt and uncle! They must have just arrived the same time we did! My sister did chat to my uncle on her cell phone while we drove on the freeway and he said they weren't too far ahead of us.
Mom went to use the restroom near City Hall (and the Fire Station) while the rest of us went to wait to be seen by the next available Cast Member of City Hall. When I got up there, I explained to the girl it was my birthday. She pulled out a sticker and wrote my name, age, and drew some little mouse ears with a black Sharpie. She then told me someone left a message on the old-fashioned phone and said I should take it. I smiled and giggled the whole time! Very cute!
After we left City Hall, it was my greatest luck to see Mickey dressed in a beautiful outfit for the 50th celebration. He walked right past me to go stand by the Fire Station to pose for pictures! I wanted to go get my picture, but my family was already half-way down Main Street! I caught up to them and kept saying, "Guys, Mickey's over there!" while my sister went, "No, he took off!" No, he didn't! He stopped to pose for pictures! But, I couldn't get them to go back. It was nearing 11:50 and we had to get over to New Orleans Square for the Blue Bayou. However, on Main Street, my uncle wanted to take a photo of my mom, sister and I, and then he wanted to snap a photo of a Hidden 50th in Frontierland, so I *DID* have time to pose with
Mickey! We never went back in that direction and I was so bummed out!
We got to the Blue Bayou on time but strangely had a bit of a problem: the CM acted like we never had a reservation! I pulled out my reservation ticket, told her we put in for it 2 weeks ago and she still looked at me oddly! I even told her the name of the girl who took our reservation. The girl finally agreed that the ticket was legitamate and proceeded to ask where we wanted to sit. Now, if we wanted a seat by the water, we'd have to wait 45 minutes to an hour. The next available seat was only three rows back, so we decided to take it. I wondered if anyone else had problems like that.
Once inside the restaurant, more problems escalated. Both my mom and aunt are highly alergic to MSG and sulfites which are mostly found in wine and balsamic vinegar. It gave our waiter, Lonnie, a chance to wear out his shoes. He had to keep checking dishes to see about the ingredients in them. Everyone at the restaurant should know ahead of time incase anyone should ask. I gave him a generous tip because he was very nice and very helpful.
For lunch, I ordered Caribbean Crab Cakes, Mom and my sister split the Monte Cristo, and my aunt and uncle also split the Monte Cristo. My uncle ordered the Gumbo to start while I got my Clam Chowder. Everything was wonderful. We didn't order dessert, but I got a cup of chocolate mousse, whipped cream and a candle on top!
After lunch, we went to check out the line for POTC, but discovered it was way too long to wait in. We decided to head to the Haunted Mansion first and got inside right away. The CM at the door looked totally exhausted. Those poor guys wear the heaviest clothing for that attraction. I looked to him sympathetically and said, "They still have you wear that stuff in the heat?" He nodded slowly and as I went to turn away, I heard him wish me a Happy Birthday!
We stood and waited and it was wall-to-wall crowded! They love to cram in as much people as they can! Oh, and I discovered what causes the ride to stop, not because of the crowds. The CM's have to stop the Doom Buggies for the disabled to climb aboard. I watched the people boarding from their wheelchairs and they can't get them on while the Doom Buggies are moving. So, because the Doom Buggies are all connected, the stopping effects every single one of them.
My uncle has been determined to find as many Hidden Mickeys and Hidden 50th's all around the park. I told him there was probably one inside the Haunted Mansion during the ballroom scene. We already knew flash photography was not allowed inside the ride, so I think he tried to get a picture without flash. I also asked him if he could try to get video of the floating candelabra, one of my favorite scenes in the ride. It didn't come out, but he did try!
After HM, we decided to skip POTC again and head over to Critter Country to ride Winnie the Pooh. The line for Splash Mountain was forget about it and we never tried to get on the whole time we were there. With the weather being so hot, it would have been refreshing, but the waiting alone is agonizing. I pointed out the Hidden 50th near the Splash Mountain drop and he got a picture of it.
There was a slightly long line for Winnie the Pooh, but we got on fairly quickly. We got a honey comb all to ourselves and enjoyed the small bit of air conditioning inside the ride.
Next, it was time to jump in that looping line of POTC and just deal with it! Again, my uncle spotted a Hidden Mickey but I don't think he got a clear shot of it. Now, with POTC, what causes the boats to turn into bumper boats is the CM's loading too many guests at a time. It bottles up inside the attraction and causes the boats to bang into one another. Not to mention the lift at the end of the ride causes a minor traffic jam. Oh, and again, no crabs on the beach next to the first skeleton after the second drop! For some reason, they took them out and haven't brought them back since.
After POTC, it was back into the oven as we tried to make our way to the Enchanted Tiki Room. We stopped in a gift shop to browse and I found a beautiful anklet of blue stones. My sister found a lovely pink one and decided to purchase both. My b-day gift from her as she called it.
We got to the entrance of the Tiki Room by almost 3 p.m. and that was when my aunt and uncle had to leave for good. My aunt's boss gave her free tickets to a Thelma Huston concert for 7:30 and they had to get home to get ready for it. I had a sneaking suspicion my uncle wanted to stay and play at Disneyland instead. He HATES Disco music!
We bid adieu and then went to wait for the next show of the Tiki Room. I wanted to purchase my usual Dole Whip Float, but the ice cream machine was broken. That would have been a cool, refreshing treat! My sister wanted to sit in the very back of the Tiki Room, something I've never done before but actually liked better. I was so tired, hot and plainly out of it, I did no participation in the show whatsoever. At one point, poor José's beak became stuck and wouldn't move for the remainder of the show. I noticed this and normally would have laughed. But with the way I was feeling, I just sat there like a lump.
By then, Mom was feeling very light-headed and tired. We left Adventureland to go up through Sleeping Beauty Castle to do some cooler rides in Fantasyland. We first stopped in the Once Upon a Time store to ask about our 50th CD dilemma, or the CD that has mixed up tracks. The CM told us to check out 20th Century Music on Main Street. They would definitely know about the CD and what we should do. We got on Snow White, which was a little cool, and then stopped to watch the Sword in the Stone show with
Merlin. I pitied the actor in the costume. He was in direct sunlight and it was hot as blazes. Mom went to stand in the shade near the buildings as we watched the show. She informed us she felt very nauseous and ready to pass out. We took her over to the food/drink stand near the Village Haus and purchased three bottled waters. They bought regular while I tried the Raspberry flavored. The flavored one is good to drink and the regular is good to pour on your head!
We sat at a table in the Village Haus for a bit before making our way to Toontown. I told them I wanted to look in the Gag Factory for Roger Rabbit merchandise. A co-worker was interested in knowing what they had and I told her I'd take a look. Just after entering Toontown, Mom started to swoon and collapsed on a bench. She could go no further. My sister and I went off to the Gag Factory to have a look around and then tried to see if could visit Mickey at his house. I still wanted my picture with him! The line to get inside his house was too long, so we went back to see how Mom was doing. I gave her the rest of my Raspberry water. She drank that and then dunked the rest of the plain water on her head!
We left Toontown and looped around up the hill to board the Disneyland Railroad to get to Main Street. Oh, this part was so awful. After the Tomorrowland stop, the tunnel for the Grand Canyon was very hot inside and there was no air, or the air smelt of the train fuel. My sister bowed her head into my shoulder and claimed she was having trouble breathing. She felt as though she were suffocating. Mom pulled out one of Disneyland pamphlets and I turned it into a fan, waving it rapidly into her face.
As soon as we stopped on Main Street, we headed over to the 20th Century Music store. The girl there named Heather was fully aware of the CD's problems. She pointed out that the first one we bought had a gold, square sticker on the cover. That was the one where the tracks are horribly mixed up. The other CD with no gold, square sticker only has two tracks mixed up, or the LeAnn Rimes and Fireworks tracks are mixed. Everything else is fine. But she said no CD was ever put out with the proper order of all the tracks. We were better off keeping the second copy with the two mixed tracks. So, if you want a CD not too badly mixed, buy the one WITHOUT the gold, square
sticker on the plastic. As we stood there, I asked Heather if Mickey would be making anymore appearances on Main Street. She checked her schedule and said she wasn't 100% sure, meaning he could show up at any time!
We left the store and I noticed Goofy in 50th clothes by the Fire Station. I love Goofy just as much as Mickey and went to go pose with him! I was happy, but I still wanted to see Mickey if at all possible. Before leaving for Disney's California Adventure, we went to watch the 50th Celebration show at the Opera House, or the show hosted by Steve Martin (and Donald Duck). Before entering the theater, you're treated to looking around the Lobby of many nostalgic pieces of Disney history, including old ticket stubs and lettered ticket stubs for the attractions. The show itself is only 17 minutes long, but it's really great and worth watching. Yes, there were parts where
we got emotional, but I do recommend this show. It won't be there forever; Abe Lincoln plans to return in the Fall!
Next! It was a restroom stop near the Bank of Disney. I browsed around the souvenir stand as I waited and then it was off to DCA. As soon as we entered, one of the camera people took our picture. We kept the ticket and debated on going later to see how it came out. For one thing, we kept our sunglasses on, so we weren't sure about buying a copy or not. Never hurts to look. You can Preview it first and if you don't like, you don't have to get it.
The first order of business was to see if D.U.H. had another performance starting. I had never seen them before and heard from my family that it was a really great show. The last performance was at 5 p.m. and it was close to 6 by the time we got over there. Oh, well! I have until July 9, 2006, so I'm sure I'll see it eventually!
Taking a walk to Paradise Pier, we thought we'd get dinner over at Ariel's Grotto. Come to find out, you can't get in unless a party cancels and they were already booked for the rest of the evening. The gentleman there suggested other places, even gave us a guide on Dining around Disney. He suggested Napa Rose, but those prices are $40 and up! No, my sister and I knew of a place to go to that didn't cost too much and it was a VERY nice atmosphere.
We entered Grand Californian and went to what is known as the Hearthstone Lounge. The menu only offers samples of the other restaurants, but we weren't too hungry. I ordered the Tuna Tataki while Mom and my sister split the Chicken Quesadilla. For dessert, we got the NY Cheesecake and split it three ways. It's cheaper to split, btw.
Later, we went back into DCA and headed to Soarin' Over California. There was no line outside, but a small wait inside. We were on and off and back on the streets to go find a spot to watch the Electrical Parade. We stood across the way from the Condor Fly sign, a very good view. I stood up on the seat and got some great pictures, leaving just one left in my camera. I didn't know what to get a picture of, but I held onto it.
We then went to the store to check out this photo taken of us earlier. Mom and I stood in line while my sister went to find a cool hoodie she saw. It was navy blue and had the classic Disneyland sign on it. She had a hard time finding it and I suggested we could go look back on Main Street. The photo of us came out real nice, so we decided to buy it. Yeah, we've all got our sunglasses on, but that makes us look like typical Californians!
By then, DCA was closed after 10 p.m. and we went back over to Main Street to look for this hoodie. Standing near the Opera House I saw someone I had only been wanting to see all day. It was Mickey dressed in the 50th clothes and posing for pictures! I squealed and demanded we stop so that I can get what I've been wanting to get since 11:30 that morning! Lucky I had one picture left. Mom took me standing with Mickey and I PRAY it came out good. See, I asked for a digi camera for my birthday, but it was too expensive. We'll see when I get my film back. Still, I was happy to just hug and kiss Mickey! That really made my day!
We went to one store to look for this hoodie. We found it for $42. It is very nice, but she didn't want to get it right away. We'll be returning later on and she may buy it then. We left the park and headed to the tram for the Lion King parking lot. Our first stop out of the park was to get some food at the nearby McDonalds. Now, get this. One chicken burrito, one McFlurry and one large fries all came to $5.26. Before we left Main Street, we stopped
at a stand to buy a bottle of water and a Coke. Both came to $5.50! Can you believe that?! It cost more for the two beverages at Disneyland than for three items at McDonalds! I said even though we were buying non-Disney items, we were buying them IN Disneyland! They have the right to charge as much as they want!
So, that was our day. As hot as it was, we still managed to have a very good time. I noticed we didn't get on any rough rides, but then again, it was far too hot to wait in line for them. They'll be other times. So, now, I'll politely shut up.
