Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend ** September 2-4, 2011 ** Check-In

I'm doing my first 1/2 marathon (or distance of any kind) for the Disneyland 1/2 this weekend. I figure I'll either finish it in time or fail spectacularly. My training has gone okay, so I suppose I'll see what happens during the race.

Well, I decided I'm going through with this trip. I broke my toe on Sunday. I kind of went back and forth, but I'm going. I'll probably end up just walking it. But let's be honest, my "run" is pretty much a walk, just with more sweat.:lmao: So I'll be on the first flight out on Friday morning!!! First trip to Disneyland!!!

Yuck about your toe! I have had a cold this past week, so haven't run at all. Thankfully I am able to breathe again...hoping to get out for 3 miles today after getting DD to school. I have been doing my long runs about a 14.5 min mile pace, which is better than my WDW half pace, but I'm wondering what the cooler temps will do...hopefully allow me to beat my WDW 1/2 time. My goal is to just enjoy and get my C2C. This might be the only time I get to DL for the 1/2!

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

I had a fractured foot last year and the run went well... a 16 min/mile pace is easy. U all will be fine....just have fun and dont think about it

Thanks. My runs have really been walks. As I was starting to gear up for more running during my training, my muscles were insanely tight so I went back to walks in order to train and not have to quit because of the pain and tightness. I'm about 15 minutes per mile right now.

Good enough. And in case you were wondering, you will not be alone. Big race, lots of people at all paces.

I did 6 miles last night at a 13:31 pace. My legs feel fine this morning so I think I'll be okay for the race. Plus the cooler weather will help. It's been over 100 here!

I finally feel ready!

I'm still freaking out about this half. I'm just happy that in 4 days I will be done with it and wont be stressing out anymore and will hopefully be able to enjoy the parks!

Good luck to everyone running/walking the 5k/half! :goodvibes

Wendy, is this your first Half? You'll be fine!

Does anyone know the date for this race in 2012? Is it the same weekend (Labor Day weekend)?

They haven't released it yet, but excluding the first year, it has always been the day before Labor Day.

I'm pretty much worthless at work now. I should just take vacation time. I was injured last year and couldn't race and now I have two years of race anxiety built up. :yay:

Quick question for the more experienced runners. I know that you should eat pasta for dinner the night before the race, but I'm not sure about what time I should eat.

Also, what sorts of foods should I eat the day before the race and what kinds of foods should I avoid?

What should I have as my first meal after the race? What, if anything, should I avoid?

And keep in mind that I'm basically limited to quick service meals in the DLR, including DTD. Thanks in advance and for the encouragement.

Hi, don't worry about eating pasta the night before the race. It's pretty much proven to not help you. It doesn't really hurt you either. Pasta Dinners before races have pretty much become excuses for people to get together and talk running. As far as what you should eat the night before the race, pick something you know sits on your stomach well. That being said, for my first two half marathons, I had pasta the night before. Before the third, I had Mexican. I'm still trying to decide what to have Saturday evening in DTD or somewhere else outside the park.

After the race, the general rule is to try to get something with some protein within the first 30 min. after finishing. I don't know what's at the finish line area, but chocolate milk, or something similar, is very good for this.

Have the pasta tonight and on Friday night, then eat what you would normally eat the night before the race.

I usually go to Mimi's Cafe (across the street from DL) the night before. They have a great turkey meal that comes with mashed potato and some veggies. This is very close to what I eat on a daily basis.

Edit to add: Make sure that you take in plenty of water the days before. Carry a watter bottle and fill it up every chance that you get.

Does anyone know if I can get chocolate SOY milk anywhere at Disney? When I did the WDW half I had some brought to my room by wegoshop. Thought about bringing some shelf stable (lunch box size) from home, but afraid it might explode in my luggage and because it's 4 oz. I can't take it in my carry-on.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with Johde. Carbo loading is quite proven and still used by all elite runners I know.

On timing, it is best to finish you last meal relatively early. I'm eating at 5:00 on Saturday and then probably won't eat much after that, except maybe grazing a bit.

It is also better to graze all day Saturday, than to have one big pasta meal. If I were at the parks, I would probably have a standard pasta plate at some point and maybe a cheese or veggie (low-ish fat) pizza another time. Both these are decent sources, and don't laugh at the pizza, I got the tip from a report from some Kenyans that they like non-sausage pizza before races. I set a PR once on pizza for dinner. Pretzels (big soft) wouldn't be bad either. Pizza places in both parks have both pasta and pizza I believe.

I would avoid anything with a lot of fat (cheesburgers, hot dogs, french fries, fried anything). I also keep the protein low because I don't really need it for the race, and I'll get plenty after the race.

At least as important is carrying water with you on Saturday. Keep hydrated all day.

Post race is easy. Here is my formula: 1) I snack on the food after the race, but don't eat big until 11-noon; 2) Monte Cristo Sandwich; 3) Karl Strauss Red Trolley; 4) Dole Pineapple Whip. This is definitely a winning formula.

I did one last month and everything went wrong, wrong, wrong. I survived, but it was just a horrible experience.

That stinks. Maybe you'll be in the same corral as me and my aunt. I'm just going to take it easy on this one. If I end up walking most of it, oh well. I just want to finish and get that medal! And be able to walk around the parks after. :)

It's been Labor Day weekend for the last several years.

I usually eat pasta the night before. I'll have a banana the morning before the race and then anything after wards.

I think the main thing is to eat familar foods so you don't upset you stomach with something new.

Agreed. Nothing new.

Race morning I also get up early (2-3 hours before start) and eat a bagel with PB or jam and 1-2 bananas, then nothing else until the run starts. Then six shot bloks (1 pack) during the run.
