Thursday, 10/4/01 MGM or Disneycub Finds His Brains and Figures Out Whats Wrong
Throughout the vacation, I had been plagued with not feeling well, with some pretty intense abdominal pain. I knew for sure that I wasnt pregnant, and two trips to the emergency room prior to the trip produced no results, but as I was lying in bed on Thursday morning, an amazing thing happened. This little light bulb (or as I call them, light blub) appeared over my head, turned on, and suddenly it all came clear. About a year ago, my doctor told me he thought I had a mild hernia .nothing to worry about. It was pretty apparent to me that the condition had worsened. Duuuuhhhh. So I got on my little cell phone, got a hold of my doctor, and made an appointment for the following Tuesday. I went to see her yesterday, and she said, Youve got a hernia.
Oh really? Thank you ever so much doctor! And how much am I being charged for this brilliant diagnosis? Me, sarcastic? Maybe the b word after sarcastic would be more accurate. Anyhow, itll be taken care of soon, as soon as I see a surgeon next week.
And now ..back to our story ..
Nothing was going to keep me away from MGM (I spent a whole ton of money on this vacation, and you WILL have a good time, dammit!), so off we went.
For all of my ambitious plans, we didnt do much at MGM. Saw the Sorcerers hat. Im on the fence about it. Alternately, its pretty neat and pretty yucky and commercial at the same time.
Inside the hat is a pin store and trivia kiosks for the 100 Year Celebration. Disney is selling 5 interactive light-up pins in conjunction with the celebration. 1 pin for each of the theme parks and 1 pin with the 100 Years of Magic logo. On certain rides, the pins go crazy. The lights flash in some pretty distinctive patterns. They make pretty cool toys. Price: around $16 apiece. Malcolm had bought me the MGM pin earlier, and I bought the logo pin at the hat. Also since I had the certificate for collecting the virtual pins on Disney.com, I received a special 100 year pin, with Sorcerer Mickey at a computer terminal. One with every light-up pin purchase, limit of 4 with the certificate.
We rode the Rock n Roller Coaster with no wait, and the Tower of Terror twice. Again, with no wait. I love the Tower of Terror. The drops are really secondary to the theming and special effects in my view, anyway. At the point where you see the field of stars, the light-up pins go absolutely bonkers. Danger, danger Will Robinson!!
Next, with no wait, we saw Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Play It! I know Ive seen the host somewhere before on television, but his name didnt ring any bells. Needless to say, I failed miserably at the questions, and was upstaged by two teenagers who did rather well. Who knows who the leader of the Scooby-Doo gang is? I thought it was Shaggy. Malcolm got the first Fastest Finger question right and was #4 at one point. The question? Put these four songs from Pinnochio in the order in which they are sung in the movie. They might as well have asked me the true meaning of the universe. Does this mean I have to give up my Disney Freak pin? WAAAAAH!
We also toured the Walt One Mans Dream exhibit. Wow. I was really impressed. The first part is a walk through from the early 1900s through the present. On display was Walts office, the camera Disney used for Steamboat Willie, and some actual mock-ups of certain attractions at Disneyland and Disney World. One part of the exhibit dealt with Walts death, and they had a huge blow-up of an editorial cartoon that showed the world with Mickeys face and ears, and tears falling from his eyes. That really got to me. Brought back memories of exactly where I was (in grade school) when I heard Walt had died. Some events, whether you know it or not, affect you the rest of your life. Walts death was one of them for me. Major sniffles from disneycub, even as Im writing this.
The second section was a film of Walts life and accomplishments narrated by Michael Eisner. Editorial comment regarding Mr. Eisner: BOO! HISS! SNARK! (snark?) End of editorial comment.
The film was very well done and pretty much followed the movie Walt The Man Behind The Myth.
I will definitely be back to see this exhibit again.
We had lunch at the 50s Prime Time Café. I had a huge ham sammich which I couldnt finish, and Malcolm had fried chicken. He finished all his vegetables. I also had a strawberry ice cream soda. We didnt get much grief from our cousin, which was probably a good thing, considering. Bill with tip: $38.61
We watched the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, which was enjoyable. Id never seen it before.
I was fading really fast at this point. We watched part of the Stars and Motor Cars parade and headed back to the resort. I have to admit that Malcolm was a real trooper through all of this. He was very concerned about my well-being and let me call the shots as to what I could and couldnt do. I really wanted to see Fantasmic! but I knew I couldnt handle sitting on a concrete seat for 2 hours.
We had dinner at Tony Romas and I got to bed early.
Next: Animal Kingdom Backstage Safari and Halloween Horror Nights XI at Universal or Do I Hear Chicken Noises coming from the Direction of Disneycub? Bwawk!
