Disney Zika Warning

Just came across this;

http://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...-world-this-summer/ar-BBtIhjp?ocid=spartandhp

Yikes! Not stopping me from going this summer as I'm done having my kids :rolleyes1, but very scary for others.

Yay another Disney click bait article. Zika already has made it to the US. Texas just had their first non-sexual domestic transmission so there is nothing we can do to stop it. Honestly if you live in the south going to Disney or not going to Disney isn't going to be a difference between Zika or not. If the mosquitoes in your home area aren't the type that can carry Zika there is no threat of spreading it back home so really unless you are pregnant or trying it is just another scare tactic.

What on earth? Why would they try to say going to Disney is any worse that walking outside your door? Infuriating media sometimes

To be honest, I have fewer issues with mosquitos at WDW than I do in greater Orlando. Disney has always been very proactive in treating for mosquitos. I still have individually packaged Off wipes in my suitcase, and figured I'd just stick one in my handbag so I would be prepared wherever I go. However, unless you quarantine everyone on the planet, there's no way to stop Zika - it's already here.

I grew up in Florida, and mosquitoes used to drive me nuts. I think the little devils used to be able to sniff me out! But not once, have I ever had a mosquito bite in all of the WDW property (been at least 25 times). And I don't use repellent when I'm there. I think Disney does a great job at combating the pests.

Yes, DH and DGD are have natural mosquito attractants in their blood. And of course poor DGD is allergic to the bites. They never have gotten a single bite at Disney.
Me on the other hand, knock on wood, can walk through a million of them and not get a single bite
It's funny how they react to some but not others.

And I love that there is a sponsored link (ad) at the bottom for Dinsey Vacation Deals. :sad2:

Yep to that, I agree, I thought it was ridiculous for the article to say that you have a higher chance at Disney

Puhleeez. Yeah, WDW will be the epicenter for Zika outbreaks this summer. The fact that half of the entire state is a swamp is irrelevant. Feel free to see the Everglades, but avoid WDW at all cost!.

I'm probably at more risk going out in my own yard in south florida. I'm a mosquito magnet and have to wear bug spray if I go out in the evenings. Not once have I ever had to wear bug spray at WDW.

Disney Springs in the evening the only place on Disney property I have got mosquitos bites. I was sitting in front of Rainforest Cafe watching the volcano for about a 1/2hour and left with lots of bites that evening.

Just for info's sake, for years, I used to think I never got bitten. Until one day, when I was in my late 30s or early 40s, I looked down and saw a mosquito feasting on my arm. I just don't react to them, and I also never feel them biting/stinging/whatever-they-do to me.

I've been following these articles. I could be wrong, but my takeaway is that it's not so much the fear that there is a lot of Zika at WDW -- but instead the fear is that with all the travelers from around the world who go to WDW, that the pandemic will spread by these visitors. Mosquitos bite infected people and then other people, etc etc. My guess is that they are trying to contain Zika. Can't blame them.

I also think Wdw does a great job of insect control. I rarely get bitten. I don't know what they do, but it works.

I'm actually afraid to know just what it is they do. The level of chemical must be off the chart

I second this. Never...and we have been at least that many times as well.

Not necessarily. If they create an environment that the mosquitos don't like, they can contain it that way as well. There are many, many plants that keep mosquitoes away. But I'm sure they have to use some sort of chemical intervention; I would actually love to know how they do it.

With all that water around I just can't imagine how they would make an environment in all of them that mosquitoes don't like. Maybe they use a combination so it cuts down on the chemicals they need
