Vicki, I'm glad to hear that they figured out what the problem was!

Tae Ja--I thought I was in the middle of the country, too, but apparently it makes a difference! The crocs were made to be water shoes, and a lot of people like them for all kinds of things. They're supposed to be bacteria-resistant, so they aren't supposed to get foot odor. They're very squishy, so they tend to be comfortable. You can wear them with or without socks, and they have a strap to hold them on that can be removed. I have a pair that I wore to the beach last year, and I loved that they protected my feet from the sand--for me, going to the beach is like walking on broken glass, very painful. I've been to the beach in my trusty Birkenstocks, and the crocs were much better because the sand came into the shoe but it went right back out again. I was able to wear the crocs into the water, and walking back to the shower, the shoes dried fairly quickly. I've seen people wear these things to water parks, and I just think they're terribly convenient water shoes. I've also owned water socks over the years, but I've found crocs more comfortable. The worst part of the crocs is that they don't have enough arch support for me, but they're apparently coming out with some that have more arch support in August. :thumbsup2

My sewing buddies are stich-wich and an iron! :thumbsup2

And don't hesitate to use these! I've found Stich-wich to be very sturdy and a great way to avoid sewing, as long as you're not going to put your costume through rigorous use.

Tae Ja-- :rotfl: OMG, that is so funny! I'm sorry, I assumed you knew what crocs were because they're the current fad. They're those ugly foam shoes with the holes in the top that everyone's wearing right now. You can see them in any mall or sporting goods store. Payless even has a line of look-alikes. Also, my hair's not going to be longer than shoulder-length, and I refuse to grow it any longer! :teeth:

Captain Logan--honestly, I do a good portion of my costume shopping at Goodwill. For a good, authentic, long-lasting frock coat, you're probably going to have to have one made. However, if you're just looking for a costume piece that doesn't have to stand up to being worn often, you can likely find something that looks similar and convert it. Admittedly, it's a lot harder to find the right shirts for guys, but for my daughter and myself I've picked up shirts and skirts at Goodwill and Walmart. Accessorize right, and you'll look just fine. I've even used vests I found at Goodwill for bodices, and I'll bet it's a lot less expensive to buy scarves there than in the store. We bought a nifty looking belt for my DD at ARC. For my tricorne, we went to a couple of costume shops and looked at the hats they had there--mine cost me $16.

My recommendation is to look around, get an idea in your head of want you want, and then head to a thrift store to find something that looks close. It's amazingly simple to add trim and buttons, maybe a bit of extra cloth in a contrasting color, and make it into what you want. Don't be afraid to look at the women's section--at your age, you can fit a lot of that stuff, and women's clothing tends to be more like the look you want. Keep in mind that you can be as fantastical as you want--no one's going to be measuring you for historical accuracy.

Here are some of the sites I've looked at for ideas:

http://www.agelessfashions.com/html/em-garb/empirate.htm
http://carlislesonline.com/pirateform.html
http://www.kristismart.com/index.php/cPath/25
http://www.verymerryseamstress.com/pirates.htm

Hope that helps!

Thanks for everything! I will definitly check goodwill and thrift stores. I have a shirt and pants, but thats about it. All i realy need is a coat, and boots.
Thankx again! pirate:

I work in a resturant as a waiter and one of the chefs there wears black crocks all of the time. He likes them because if he spills anything on his feet the mess isnt as bad.

You have to remember, I'm in the middle of the country where we don't get trends for about 3-6mos. Thanks to the internet and satalite t.v. we're getting better. O.k., I have seen those type of shoes for gardening or nurses wear them, but didn't know they went main stream.

Thanks for the other tips and websites. I look forward to compiling my costume. My DH is going to think I'm crazy.

Bill-I was thinking you are awfully brave to be on a cruise thread dominated by ladies. Maybe if we can get more dh's/bf/and son's to post it would help balance things out.

My dh says I just do all the posting for him and that he doesn't need to be on here. :rotfl:

Logan, the site I posted is the most reasonably priced site I've seen so far. When time gets closer, I'll start looking at Ebay.

I hope every one has a snow free day! :sunny: It's snowing here. :sad2:

So I guess that means me and Bill are the only guys on this thread. :rockband: :teeth:

The Coat on the third website listed is the closest to what i am looking for. it is the third one down. The only difference that i am looking for is for it to be slightly less formal looking. I am going to use Jack Sparrow as an example. Like a not as formal, more scruffier than the picture there. Just a basic dark, quality material, and with little or no embroidery. Also like Jack, i want to have that belt thing that he has, whereas the buttons are just for show.
I will look at goodwill for more ideas.

Glad your problem was diagnosed as well. Some problems well they aren't treatable like DISing or not being able to log off the DIS......

I have hypothyroid and I am being put on Synthroid!

My mom (who is in our cruising party) is hypothyroid and has been on Synthroid for years. That and her morning coffee and she's up and running like the best of them. :rotfl:

Logan is a waiter at a retirement home near our house. They hired him at 14, not many places do that. He's getting great experience in a controlled environment. It's better than the mall where all the kids seem to hang out and end up in trouble. He has managed to save for a car :car: , now all he needs is his license. He got his permit in January. :crazy2: 9 mos to go...:scared1: :scared1::scared1:

:cool1: SO GLAD IT'S FRIDAY! :cool1: Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Does anyone from our group ever participate in Friday night cruise chat here on the DIS? I have logged in a few times, but not recently. I thought it would be fun to get a chat going, as it gets closer to our sail date, Then again, I can never seem to remember so who knows if I'd be there. :lmao: Something to think about....

I can hear all the grandma's now telling Logan, "boy, go get a haircut!" :lmao: No, working with elders is great! I commend him since he probably hears them say, "WHAT'D YOU SAY AGAIN???". That's great training Logan, WTG! Controlled environ. that's great. I can't see any of the old folk pressuring him into any thing...except maybe a hair cut.. Sorry, I'll get off that topic now. Hair style compared to what ever else could be bad (drugs, sex, bad grades) is probably the least of your worries.

I went on the Friday night chat a while back (it might have been last Fri). I got in the middle of it time wise and got lost pretty fast. They were posting about airfare and what not. I just felt out of the loop jumping in like I did. I logged out pretty quick. So, maybe I wouldn't have felt so out of it if I jumped in at the beginning. But that would be fun if we 9/3ers could log on and take over a chat room.

I think in the past, they have mistaken him for a girl. I guess they all look the same with a pony tail?!? :teeth: :confused3

My grandmother's eyesight was terrible. It was kind of nice when she got older that she didn't see what I was wearing. Not that I was over the top, but it was different. My grandmother had one good eye (if you stood close enough to her), but her hearing was phenominal (w/ help w/ hearing aides). Man, you could wisper and she'd comment back. That was freaky to the end of her days.
