Disney Wonder - Alaskan Cruise

My family (10 people-3 families) are wanting to go to Alaska this summer. Tell me about the ship. Yes, I am reading all I can. Just wanted to know if am missing anything. My biggest question, what part of the ship do you like for the stateroom? what deck?

We've been on 2 DCL cruises to Alaska onboard the Wonder and have a 3rd planned for next year. The Wonder is a beautiful ship! We prefer aft ourselves - just a quick elevator ride up to the drink station and the aft elevators are less busy than at midship. On our first 2 cruises we were in Cat 7 A on deck 7 stateroom #7126. These rooms have enclosed verandahs with a big open oval porthole that give nice protection against the wind and chill in Alaska and we loved the privacy.

We sailed on the Aug 2014 sailing and loved our first experience on one of the classic ships. My only advice would be to avoid the rooms on deck 8 under the open deck areas. We enjoy afternoon naps and found there was noticeable noise from people sliding chairs around during the day. It wasn't so bad that I couldn't nap mind you but it was distracting. Also on days when we were watching the gorgeous scenery slip past it was a bit distracting to hear the sliding and banging of chairs being moved around. Otherwise it was such an amazing cruise and it has gone back on our to do list for a future cruise (maybe not on DCL but Alaska for sure).

I tend to prefer the aft portion of midship myself. If given the choice of forward or aft, I choose aft. The Wonder is gorgeous. I just got off the 10 nite Hawaii cruise last month and after all these years she is still so beautiful! I love the classics and have been on both the Magic and the Wonder several times each. Personally I prefer Deck 7 or lower for the exact reasons that RebelHawk mentions. Please do keep in mind that these are all very personal choices we are giving you.

If you tend to get seasick, you want to be in the lowest deck possible (deck 1) and midship.

We just got off the Wonder Oct 1st and had a great cruise, we booked Alaska onboard for the last sailing August 2016. What a beautiful ship! So looking forward to Alaska and being onboard the Wonder again! I felt just a small bit of seasickness on our cruise (we were deck 6, midship), this time we will be deck 2 midship (almost aft).

Bcwife, were you on our sailing from Hawaii to Vancouver? DD got some pretty bad seasickness on the Pacific crossing but she is very prone to motion sickness. And I certainly agree, isn't the Wonder still amazing? I could kick myself for not taking lots of pix of her while on our 10 nite cruise since I will most likely not be back on her until after her big dry dock makeover next year…..

Think carefully about which month....

• May to July is dry... August starts to get wet and September is for storm chasers
• May and September will have the lowest prices, but the weather is cooler
• I like to go in July for dry weather in both Alaska and Vancouver.
• Vancouver offers fireworks in July on select days and early August has Pride festivities

Get a Balcony room for private space for Tracy Arm. As a budget traveller.... I demand a climate controlled deck 2 oceanview room.... skip the deck 1 "twins".

Think about which dining.... I like second dining for a more relaxed breakfast on debarkation day. Others may prefer the first dining to match their home time zone.

Think about extra days in Vancouver... your bonus port. Cruise terminal hotels will offer convenience, but there is significant savings staying a few blocks away for multi-night stays.

No (I wish!!), we were on the 4 night Vancouver to San Diego cruise right after Hawaii. One of our servers was telling us how rough some of the nights had been crossing over to Vancouver!

and @pillow and i had a drizzly journey on our way out of Tracy Arm as well as at Juneau two days after in early July 2015, but we had a great time regardless! the weather is unpredictable up in Alaska, so just pack your layers and enjoy your cruise.

to answer your original question we were on deck 7 midship, and it was lovely. easy access to the food and beverage stations on deck 9, quick flights down the stairs to the kids' clubs, restaurants, and shows. no complaints.

now if i can get my act together and finish my trip report (ran out of steam after day 4, haha)... you will have to read Jodie's first--she has lots of awesome photos!
