My son broke his arm today and we are going to Disneyland in a couple of weeks. Is there any policy about riding with a cast or is it just for us to make the best judgement?
Thanks in advance,
Deanna

Hi CAGirl and welcome to the DIS, I'm very glad you found us.

I don't really know of any policy about casts. You might want to ask this question on our DisABILITIES board, too. I'll bet you get some great advice there.

My daughter broke her leg 2 days before our trip a couple of years ago. We went to the parks and she rode just about everything. We had to be careful that she didn't bang her leg on anything but Disney employees did not stop her from riding.

I want to mention that there is a product that creates a vacuum over casts and allows people in casts to swim! We bought one for my daughters leg (I think around $40) and it was well worth it. Although we didn't go to a water park, it did allow her to ride those rides where you get a "little" wet without worry.

My dd broke her wrist before our trip and she wasn't stopped from riding anything. Another vote here for the cast cover (I think it's called an aero cast or something, I do know it was blue). That really saved the trip, she was able to go swimming with the other kids as much as she wanted. Believe me, we all would have been miserable if she couldn't have done that!!

The rides that are more rough are marked on the park maps with a red triangle icon to warn that there are some health warnings associated with that ride/attraction. There are also signs before you get into line and before boarding. But, it's up to you to decide whether the ride is appropriate or not. They used to have something on their official website about riding with a leg cast, but it was mostly info about rides where a leg cast would fit, rather than things they were recommending you not go on. They didn't have anything about arm casts and even the leg cast info is gone from their website now.
For some rides, like Dinosaur, Body Wars and Star Tours, the arm in the cast will be dead weight and might fly around. For others, you might find that you want 2 arms to hang on. So, find out what you can about the rides before you go; if in doubt, have some members of your party ride to decide whether the person with the cast should go; ask CMs about their ride.
And.....have fun.

My DS 13 broke his wrist 2 weeks before we went to WDW last year and was in a cast for our trip. He was able to ride everything he wanted to, including all the mountains, T of T and Rock'n'Roller Coaster. When we went on Splash, he wore a cover over his cast to protect it but didn't really need it.

The only slight problem we had was at Universal Islands of Adventure and that was easily sorted - he was getting on the ride when a CM told him he had to sit in the outside seat so he did not hurt anyone with his cast. Funnily enough he had already ridden it twice sitting in the middle and no one said anything.

I can recommend a waterproof cover for swimming. My son even went snorkelling when we were on DCL after our trip to WDW.

I was really freaked when he first broke his arm but in the end the only thing he missed out on was the banana boat at Castaway Cay when we were cruising because he wouldn't have been able to hold on. In the end it was no hassle at all so please don't worry.

Thank you all for your help. My son was happy to hear about all the people who rode rides with a cast on. I have a friend who told me all about the arm covers so he can swim and we found a pharmacy with them in stock.
Thanks again
Deanna

My ds had a broken arm last year also. Rode everything we wanted. The only thing we did not do was go to the water parks. I thought it would be too dangerous to be in the wave pool with the cast. He did have the blue covering and swam in the hotel pool. The only time we had a problem with a ride was at IOA dueling dragons. They told him he had to sit on the outside with the cast not around anyone or so that the cast would be next to me. This was also after we rode a few times. After we were told this he just made sure he sat on the outside. Also during the whole trip, water would get in the blue thing and his cast but towards the end we did not care. We figured we would just go to the doctors when we got back and have them put on a new cast. I did think our vacation would be ruined but it was not. We had a terrific time.
