A While back I heard rumours that Disney was going to start a Cruise off of the West coast. Not sure if it was off California or further north to compete for an Alaskan/Disney Cruise. I would certainly LOVE that if that ever happened, does anyone have any information about this? :D

It's just a rumour at this point. Disney has started making plans for a third ship... but they haven't started construction yet or even selected a builder... so a third ship is at least a few years away yet. There's been lots of speculation what kind of routes they might offer with a third ship? California? Alaska? Maybe. New York to Bermuda? Maybe. The Mediterranean? Maybe. They've got lots of time to do a lot more marketing study before any of this happens.

Well here's one person who will be praying for the west coast! It would definately be wonderful not to have the airfare. Maybe just maybe I could cruise like Barb :D

My waiter last August on the Wonder said he was already on a transfer list to the West Coast, so some plans somewhere are being made. Would Disney ever buy a ship from another cruise line and refurbish it?? Us West Coasters would love a Disney ship out here. I'm bringing a group of 10 from San Diego for the Magic in June and you should see my airfare! Would much rather spend that on the ship!!

Knowing how particular Disney is, I would imagine that they would not refurb a ship, but would rather have another new one built to their exacting specifications. I remember reading that part of the delay in the building of the Magic was that they were so specific in their requirements. Hubby was part of a focus group discussing ideas for the new ship. That was prior to 9/11, so I imagine their plans might have slowed down now. But hopefully the new ship will become reality of one these days in the not so distant future. I would love a West Coast itinerary, as we have only been to Disneyland/California Adventure once and would love to do it again in combination with a Disney cruise. We did Viking Serenade to Ensenada and it was fun, but it couldn't measure up to Disney.

When we were on the Magic 2 weeks ago our waiter Roger from Brazil stated that the construction of the new ship was to begin in 2 yrs. in Italy, I believe it is the same builder for the Magic and the Wonder, no name has been selected yet, but he did say maybe for ports of call would be (Bermuda), or even a possibility of the west coast thing, so keep your fingers crossed..

Hope this helps...

Neither Disney nor Fincantieri have announced any such contract.

Most likely, Roger from Brazil heard this from another crew member who heard it from another crew member who heard it from another crew member who heard it from... and so on. I don't doubt that Roger from Brazil is sincere, but I doubt that he really has inside scoop on what's being planned in the corner offices at 210 Celebration Place, Celebration, and 500 South Buena Vista Street, Burbank.

Last year, Disney Cruise Line announced that they had a task force looking into the possibility of expanding the fleet and that they were having discussions with shipyards. (I don't remember the exact words of the announcement.)

Unfortunately, I have a hard time believing that Disney will make the huge capital investment that even a single new ship would require -- especially given the economy, the aftermath of 9/11, and the current oversupply of cruise ship capacity. I hope I'm wrong.
