Disney Visa questions

My deposit is due in a couple of days for our WBPC cruise. I've been thinking about applying for the Disney Visa. I already have a rewards card that we charge everything to and then pay off every month. It used to be a flat cash back 1% on everything, 2% on groceries, and 5% on gas. They have recently changed it to a "point" system and the rewards have gone down.

I'm looking at the Disney Visa mostly for the park and Disney Store discounts. If I understand correctly though, would I also get 2% back on my cruise? If I apply for the card, I won't have it by the time my deposit is due. If I make my deposit payment with another card, but then pay off the remaining balance with the Disney Visa, will I still get 2% on the remaining balance or will I "lose" that because the initial deposit was on another card?

Also, if I were to want to take advantage of the 6 months 0% interest, would I still be able to do that if the initial deposit wasn't made on the Disney Visa?

The only thing you will lose if a $50 OBC offered by DCL if you pay your entire cruise with a Disney Visa.

You would still get your 2% on all purchases and you can use the 0% 60 month interest.

We really love our Disney rewards visa. We have two accounts, one is the flat 1% non annual fee non premier free card, and one is the premier $49 annual fee that has 2% on Disney, Gas, Groceries and Restaurants and 1% everything else. We got a $50 bonus gift card when we signed up for the free card and put our cruise on it and got 6 months same as cash (the only way we would have been able to go on our cruise at all!) and then we got $200 bonus gift card when I opened up the Premier card in my own name. That was $250 right there, we did get $50 OBC on our first cruise, this time we got a 10% off coupon so we couldn't combine them (but its better than the $50 anyway). Since last March when we opened it, we have gotten at least $800 in rewards or incentives, probably more. Our cruise was half paid for in rewards/bonus cards, and then when we posted ours and Twinkie's cruises along with all the groceries and gas etc., than we had $175 to use towards our Disney tickets (almost a free ticket for one of us!) and we are looking to finish the rewards here soon, redeem them and take them for our EPCOT anniversary dinner.

The card isn't perfect, but no other card ensures that I get to have this kind of fun. We have had good success with our American Express Delta card (flights, miles, and companion vouchers), but not everyone can take AmEx. We still have that card. However, we kicked the Captial One Venture card to the curb. We never got ONE flight, not even one piddly mile with that thing. I'm SO much happier with my Disney rewards card than that thing. I have had mostly good customer service with Chase. One time I accidentally selected the wrong account to pay out of and bounced everything and they took pity on me and reversed an interest payment to help offset some of those fees. That was nice, and not something they had to do. On the other hand, don't ever use them for a Money Gram or money transfer as they charge a minimum of $10 every time for that or a percentage. Blah. Pass on that.

Additionally, we do get some perks for having it. I'm looking forward to getting our exclusive Character photo at Epcot with our group. We should have a lot less of a line and we get free photos (I get 2 because I have 2 accounts). Specials get sent to our email (like rooms at 30% off before released to the public) or spa specials at Aulani or even broadway tickets to Alladdin at a discount or something. Some of the lunches at various restuarants are discounted, some of the Disney online merchandise has a discount and the parks gets like $10 off for a $50 purchase or something to that effect.

I think the biggest perk is that you HAVE to use it for Disney (which is fun!) vs just cash back or something (I know, heaven forbid) "practical", and I like that it means my honey and I are going on a Disney cruise for $600 and that INCLUDES gratuity, taxes and fees.

Also, we are seeing if our On board credit that we posted on them ahead of time is going to show up as 6 months interest free. I think it will, even if my Disney rep isn't sure and thinks it won't. I'll find out for sure next week, but that means that all my excursions and Palo would be same as cash for 6 months too, which will be great. We booked the sea lions again! I think they stand a good chance of being free finance because it processed as DCL Reservation and anything that has posted that way has been deferred, so I'm hopeful! That means we can enjoy some of the 'better' excursions because we have six months to cover it if necessary. However, when I went to buy the tickets, they were not deferred financing. But I did get $175 off with my rewards!

Good stuff to me!

We've done this. I always put the deposit on my AMEX card because I only use the Disney card for Disney (the AMEX perks are better). We use a TA to book the cruise. When the final payment is due, I have her refund the deposit to the AMEX card and charge the entire cruise to the Disney card. This way you can get the $50 OBC. But you will get the 2% regardless of how the deposit is paid. Make sure you find the promo with the $200 gift card when you apply. Good luck!

The Disney Visa regular or premier gives you 6 months at no interest for WDW packages and DCL cruises.

The deposit when paid with the DVR, qualifies for the 6 months zero interest as long as it's over $100. Any payments towards the cruise you may do prior to PIF, also qualify and of course the full PIF amount. Each payment will get its own 6 months.

You may also prepay tips by calling DCL or have the TA do it prior to PIF and then this also qualifies for the zero interest. I believe you can also add additional funds (as OBC) and they would also qualify for the zero interest - this would be good if you plan some port adventures.

Folio balance will not qualify for the zero interest however. All DCL charges will give you 1% in Disney Rewards points for the regular card, and 2% for the Disney Visa Premier.

The rewards points can be used as payment towards the folio charges or the cruise itself.

I remember seeing something about the ability to cash in for airline travel with the Disney premium card (we have it), but can't remember the details or how it works. I think you buy the ticket and transfer the "rewards" somehow. Could be worth looking into further. Not familiar with limitations, we use it on the cruises as on board ship credit. :-)

Thanks everyone!

I will go ahead and pay my deposit with my other card. I'm going to hold off on the Disney Visa until I see an offer for the $200, which is soon I hope!

I saw the $200 offer on the bottom of the DCL website today. It was a $200 credit with $500 in purchases. The link says you can use it today if you're approved. I hope you get it!

Yes. With the Premier card you can use your reward points to pay off an airline ticket charged to the card. That's currently the only way to use reward points to pay the credit card balance.

Otherwise, the points can be transferred to a 'Rewards Card' which is just like a Disney Gift card, and can only be used at Disney resorts and stores (and DCL). Note that the points expire after about 5 years, but the rewards card expires within two years so careful when transferring.

Another thing to note is some of the other benefits

* The premier card is now considered a Disney Visa Signature card - you get discount on movie tickets at Fandango and great pricing on extended warranty for electronics for example
* You get early access to some Broadway shows and WDW promotions
* You get a free 5x7 print with characters at Epcot - you can do this every day

Thank you so much! I've been on the DCL website all day researching our cruise and never even saw this. I just applied, was approved, and it let me pay for the deposit using my new Disney Visa! So, I've already charged $500 and will be receiving the $200 statement credit!

How does this work? I haven't seen this benefit before.

  Awesome! Glad you found it. Sometimes those types of ads don't show up for everyone.

Has anyone used the Disney Visa offer for the Aladdin show in NY? I've read the rewards page & called the number listed but I can't get any details. The guy that answered the phone had no idea. What are the premium seats and what's the cost of the package? Or is the price the same for the seats regardless and they throw in some souvenirs to get you to upgrade to the expensive seats? Anyone taken advantage of this offer?

I haven't called about it, but it looks like you can book online using a Promo code = the first 4 digits of your card number. Enter it into the Promo box on the seating map, and then you have to purchase a "premium" seat (which looked to be about $199 under the package when I played with it). It indicates to pick up the VIP package at the New Amsterdam Theatre box office (and show your card). Presumably that's where you get the lanyard, photograph, and probably a coupon for the drink cup. I would think you can book it over the phone, but you'll have to provide the Promo code.

Enjoy the show!

Just so you know; I had applied for the Disney Visa but hadn't received it when the deposit was due. I called the cruise line and the agent extended my deposit due date by 3 more days so I could put the full amount on the card. (But he also said that they could refund the deposit later if I hadn't gotten the card by then.)
