Just wondering if Canadians are allowed to apply. I haven't been able to find a link that allows us to change it from US to Cdn. I hold other US cards, strange that Disney wouldn't allow it.

thanks in advance !

I wish they would clue into this... Would be a huge market to a lot of people I know.

Not sure, but I think it may be a legal issue. Our credit card industry regulations not the same as those Disney adheres to in the US.

yeah I think credit cards have to be issued by a bank registered to do business in canada.

I thought the Disney Visa was through Chase bank? Chase also issues the Amazon Visa and Sears MasterCard - both of which you can get in Canada (and are great because they don't charge you a conversion fee when you make USD purchases).

They are issued through the Canadian subsidiary of JP Morgan Chase. Disney would have to make a deal with the Canadian Chase Bank, and it probably would still be difficult because Disney doesn't have much Canadian business and no Canadian head office. The Amazon and Sears cards are for the Canadian businesses (Amazon.ca and Sears Canada). The Marriott card is their other big US name, but Marriott also has a bunch of hotels in Canada, and probably a Canadian head office.

Banking regs prevent US issuers from providing cards directly to Canadians, and there are restrictions around Canadian banks setting up affinity arrangements with non-Canadian companies.

Anyone know tricks for an American living in Canada or dual citizen? I have a US bank account but not a US address. Would be nice to have!

We are not experts on this matter but there are many Canadian that want US address for online shopping and shipping purposes.

These guys offer Canadians a US mailing address for shipping.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I know that trick. Haven't yet used it though I was more thinking in order to get the visa I'd need a physical US address it says.. And I'd anyone had luck getting one with a Canada address who was American but living in Canada.

I would talk to your US bank and see if they can offer you one if you just want any Visa. You probably had a US address when your account was setup.

Assuming you also have a US SSN and will have a presence with the US Credit Bureaus (Transunion et al), you might have a chance of getting a US card like the Disney card, but most of the Credit Card companies would be aware of the mail-forwarders and have those addresses blocked. You credit rating is not shared across borders, so US banks can't check your Canadian history, nor can Canadian banks check US history.

I used to work for a US based card issuer's Canadian bank, and know it can be very difficult, but not impossible, for foreign residents to get out of country credit on either side of the border.

Thanks, I do have several US credit cards, I only moved to Canada 2 1/2 years ago and so most my life was spent in the US.... only this month was able to get a Canadian credit card... Took so long starting from nothing, add to that I recently quit my job and I was looking at waiting a long time...but, I want the Disney one specifically, to earn the rewards it offers.

They did check our US history when we got a mortgage here, and subsequently I got bumped due to having 6 small student loans they couldn't verify quick enough. My US history is stellar. Maybe I can call Disney directly and ask. Doesn't hurt. Which is why getting my own cc here was important. If something happens to my husband I am in trouble come mortgage renewal. Goodbye 30 year loans. Lol.

Thanks again.

Actually, Disney won't have any say. It is the issuer (Chase) who gets to decide. You may have a pretty good chance without even making a call. Chase tends to be a FICO lender (the only thing that really matters is your credit score). If you have trusted family (parents or siblings) in the US apply using their address. As long as the lender can easily validate that they are looking at YOUR credit bureau (i.e. with your SSN), and you have a good score with some recent activity on your existing cards, they will probably approve without really caring what the address is. Once you have the card, you can look into switching the address to your current one. The rules aren't about Canadians not having US cards, it's about American banks marketing and doing business in Canada.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any recent credit card activity, not in a year. Our last Disney trip, so that raises a good point as to how good the numbers are now, what inactivity does to it, I am a previous chase card holder, we closed it.

Actually, Canadians CAN get the Disney VISA card. It doesn't so much have anything to do with 'being' Canadian as living in Canada. You can apply BUT you have to be able to put a mailing address in the US. And I believe it has to be an address that you have used for a certain amount of time. I know several people who live in Canada, and have the card. They have proper mailing addresses in the US. The bill gets send there, they pick it up, and pay it like any other regular bill.

If you are not in the position (geographically) to have a US mailbox, then it would be very difficult to get one. I am in the process of getting the card. I have recently received a mailbox and will be applying in the next several months.

True, but remember that the lender will also check your credit bureau/score. That is primarily what the credit decision is based on. You need a US address for mailing, but it is unlikely that an application will be approved if there is no credit profile available in the US. Note also that credit granting has become much more restricted since the economic downturn.

Was thinking about this but it sounds like a lot of trouble. Thanks for all the info. :)
