Disney via I-75 vs. I-65?

We drive to WDW from Louisville. On our last trip we really struggled with the construction on I-75, especially on the way home. What usually is a 13.5 hour trip took us about 16.

DW and I are doing an empty-nester trip in 2 weeks, and I'm toying with the idea of taking I-65 to Montgomery, then US 82 from Montgomery to Tifton, GA and catching I-75 there. Per Google Maps it adds 50 miles and about 50 minutes to our trip, but IMHO it would be worth it if it helps us skip the choke points we faced on our last trip.

Has anyone ever tried that route before? If so, what are your thoughts on doing that vs. just taking I-75 and hoping for the best?

There have been numerous discussions of this subject before on here and there are fans of both the I-65 and I-75 routes. The Tifton routing is less-mentioned though. Most of the discussions have travelers taking US 231 from Montgomery south to Dothan and Cottondale, picking up I-10 there. Southbound you arrive in Florida far earlier in the trip so it "seems" like you're making great progress even though you still have plenty of miles to go. The I-65 routing avoids Atlanta which can be a big plus.

My suggestion if you (or a family member) are AAA, get 'TripTiks' for both possibilities. They'll highlight possible construction/tie ups. It's possible you'll run into construction on I65 if you go that route.

Now, you don't say where you hit construction before, but what if you take 65 to Nashville, I20(?- maybe I24)) to Chattanooga, then 75 south? Just a thought.

sam, sorry for that--it was in Georgia, south of Macon. We do take the Nashville/Chattanooga/Atlanta route to get to 75.

Good point about construction on 65, too. I'll get TripTiks for both & see how they look.

We just did the drive from Louisville to WDW using the I-75 route. Construction was not that bad. We hit traffic in Nashville going down (rush hour). Lost about an hour there. Hit some traffic in Atlanta due to a Baseball game getting out. Forgot about that :)

We drove home straight thru on Friday - we hit traffic due to wrecks in Atlanta & Chatt. But other than that - it was not that bad.

Many thanks for the insight from all, and especially my fellow Louisvillian. I think we'll take 75 like we always do. We'll be traveling on weekend days so we shouldn't have much trouble due to rush hour.

Just did I-75 from Lexington and I didn't hit any traffic on the way down 2 weeks ago or on the way up. Very easy drive except for one thunderstorm. Atlanta was no problem at all (~5PM on Saturday both times). The only major construction was in southern GA but that wasn't even bad (still 2 lanes open).
