Disney/USO Split?

OK, so I have bitten the bullet and extended my trip in Orlando by 2 days (much to my wallet's chagrin, and that's the max possible), so we now have an 8-day timeframe. Originally, I was going to do 4 days WDW/2 days USO, so now I was kinda assuming I would spend the extra 2 days at WDW for a 6/2 split. But I'm starting to wonder if I should do a 5/3 split, and would love feedback. A few things about us that may be relevant:
  • We're going to WDW first, then Universal. We go to DLR annually every year at Christmas (and will have been there in January), so it's not like this is a once in a lifetime Disney trip of any variety. That being said, Anaheim is our home park and I don't expect to venture to Orlando very often. We're not spending a ton of time on ADRs (just a few); we're ride focused! We open and close parks with a break in between if necessary.
  • My twin daughters will be 12 years old at the time of our trip and are Harry Potter freaks, but also love Disney.
  • We are going to stay at POFQ for the Disney part and switch to HRH at Universal (so we will have the express passes at USO). We will be renting a car.
  • We arrive at about 4:30 pm on a Sunday and depart very early in the am on the Tuesday of the following week. I was thinking I'd do DS the evening we arrive by taking the boat from POFQ. Our trip dates are May 8-17.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
:thanks:

We did 3 days on our first Universal trip in March. I really liked having the 3 days, because we could spend one afternoon swimming at Royal Pacific. We spent the other days riding stuff to our hearts content. There's a ton of stuff at the HP parts, but the other parts of the parks are not to be missed either, like Minions, Springfield, Seussland, and Marvel area. We didn't even get to do the Nickelodeon, Jurassic Park, or Popeye areas. We did get to ride the main HP rides at least 3 times. We will do 2.5-3 days on our next trip. You can do it in 2 though and still not feel cheated. We will probably spend 5.5-6 days at WDW on our next trip. So, I vote for 5 WDW/3 Uni.

I wonder if I should 5.5/2.5 - get up early that sixth day at WDW and do a morning at a park, and the head to USO and do the late afternoon/evening there?

We might do that. Although, I am thinking we will have to do US first. I prefer to do it last, since it's so much more relaxing than Disney. We usually do a breakfast at 1900 Park Fare our last day at WDW, so we don't always go to the park. You should be able to do it though. It would be hard to get to US first thing in the morning if you weren't staying there the night before, so I think splitting the day between the two works well. I wouldn't do the HP stuff until much closer to closing though, since the Express Pass doesn't work on Forbidden Journey, Gringott's, or Hogwart's Express. You can always shop and play with wands earlier. You could do the Express Pass stuff when you get there. Keep in mind though, that the US parks close earlier than MK. They are more like Epcot or DHS for closing times. They also open later, usually 9am.

We did the US/WDW split on our trip last year but we did US first. We stayed at HRH as well and it is awesome.....it is close enough to the parks that you can walk or take the boat.

We did our first 2 days at US then headed over to WDW for the remained of our trip and felt the 2 days was plenty. Then once we got to WDW DS fell in love with coasters after getting up enough courage to ride RnR. We had a free 3rd day on our ticket still from a promotion Universal offered when we booked So we headed back to US/IoA for another day on on a down day at WDW so he could ride all the big coasters like Hulk, Dueling Dragons and Rip Ride Rockit multiple times.

We were there just before Diagon Alley opened (we could see it behind the walls pretty much finished) so with that now open I would say go to Us/IoA for 3 days if your kids love HP.

We did a split stay last May. If you tour open to close (and have early entry and express pass from staying onsite) then I think 2 full days at Universal will be enough. Crowds were very manageable last year when we went during that same week. The weekend was a bit busier during peak day times but we never waited that long (30 minutes max at noon for Transformers) and we didn't have express pass like you will. You will be able to get a lot done if you stay all day at the parks so with a third day you might find yourselves just re-riding some of you faves. Last year there was a promotion in May online buy 2 days, get 3rd day free. It's hard not to want to use all days if you have them! Universal was a nice change in pace from Disney and the Harry Potter areas are unlike anything at Disney. Since you are big fans plan to spend a far amount of time doing the rides and exploring all the details. Maybe consider taking a 1/2 day off at either Disney or Universal to just enjoy the pools and resorts. Have fun!

5/3 sounds good.

Our first Orlando trip we had 10 days total at WDW parks and then ended up with half day, two full days, and what was supposed to be 1/4 day but ended up being almost 3/4 day at Uni. We fell madly in love with Universal.

I wouldn't. Because if you're like us, you'll love Uni so much that you'll then regret that half day at WDW.

Plus, the hours at Uni are much much shorter, in general, than at WDW, so by the time you get over there you'll have missed quite a lot of the day.

I'd do 5/3. That way, you won't be rushed at IoA/US, but you'll also have a chance to sample the Disney parks. When we did split stays, we did 4/2, but that was before the Harry Potter attractions. And before we were priced out of doing both. We did 6 days at IoA/US on our last trip there two years ago and weren't bored - and will do 6 days there at our next trip coming up soon. On the other side of things, we had 8 Disney days last year on a trip and that was wonderful too. So, I don't think you can pick too many days for either. You'll have fun no matter what you pick!

We're also doing 8 days between WDW and Universal. You should definitely be able to do Universal in 2 days with the express pass but WDW should be fine in 5 days too.

We're going in January 20-28 (really 9 days but we don't do anything on our Sabbath) and are currently planning on 5 days in WDW and 2 in Universal. Our last day we leave as a toss up to go to the park we most want to do again. It will probably be Universal simply because we already have the extra day (5th day) in WDW to catch whatever we missed on our first 4.

I would do three days because you may miss the shows at UOR. USF especially has several shows in it that are amazing like Celestina Warbeck and The Fountain of Fair Fortune. It also gives you time to not feel so rushed on the last day. On the last day of my four trip in February, I got to see a couple of things I had missed because of the extra time I had.

We did a similar split trip a few weeks ago - 6 days WDW and 3 days USO. Between the overwhelming heat, some issues with our hotel, and my general disappointment with USO I was feeling a little trapped by the end of our stay. Express pass is awesome, and gets you on things so quickly that you can finish all the attractions in a park by lunch time if you take advantage of early entry, depending on crowd levels. If you're going at a very busy time, 3 days might be needed, but we were able to do everything in two days. Honestly we probably could have done everything at least once in one long touring day if we pushed ourselves. As I said, my impressions are definitely biased by unpleasant weather and issues at Royal Pacific where we stayed, but I ended up feeling a little ripped off. Disney is expensive - but I never feel regret at the money I spend there. I can't say the same for Universal. I'm glad we tried it, but I really wished we would have just stayed at Disney and saved the extra money.

That's a shame. I hope it didn't ruin the entire trip. Did you discuss the issues at Royal Pacific with management, so at a minimum maybe others would not have the same problems? Do you mind telling us what the issues were? It's fine if you don't want to discuss it. I know we had a great time and felt it was very good value for the money, but every person and trip is different. I hope you give it another chance sometime.

While we were checking in the woman at the counter made a hushed phone call to someone, and upon hanging up said something along the lines of "Ok, because of construction your water will be shut off on Tuesday from 10:30 - 3, but you'll have access to the restroom in the club lounge" (we were staying club level) and I was sort of taken aback but initially accepted it. After chatting with the lady at the tickets counter and purchasing express passes for HHN, we went over to concierge and asked about changing to a room that wouldn't be affected by the shut off, but all they could offer was a 2 queen room and I really wanted to keep our king. Never was I offered any sort of discount or even much of an apologetic comment. So, the next day we went to the parks and came back to take an afternoon nap, and our room wasn't cleaned yet. Annoying, but understandable. We waited in the club lounge for housekeeping to finish, where there was terrible construction noise. (To be fair, they had a club area set up by the pool as well so we could have gone down there - but I was looking to escape the 90 degree weather).

We go back to our room to lie down, and again - some horrible jackhammer sort of noise. I went down to the front desk again, and was able to switch to a king room in a different tower where there would be no noise. The girl helping us this time was wonderful. She also made a note on our reservation so we got early housekeeping service. We did receive a little container of chocolates with a printed card as apology for the construction. Another day I was awoken from a nap by housekeeping screaming at each other down the hall - literally screaming. It was more the collective effect of all these little things adding up - and it got to the point where I couldn't be bothered to call and complain anymore. I'm not a complainer usually, and felt like if I piped up once again it would be like 'Oh god it's this guy again'.

As I said, it was hot and miserable weather, and I was pretty tired out as we were at the end of our trip. I'm definitely somewhat biased. Part of it too is that I was SO EXCITED to try out USO, and to stay club level at a nice hotel. I saved it for the end of our trip so I wouldn't be so bummed to leave Disney. For me it just didn't measure up - neither the resort, or the parks. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from going. I just feel like if I'm paying $300+ for a hotel room, I shouldn't be told I won't be able to you-know-what in my own bathroom for the majority of the day. I shouldn't be awoken by screeching staff. Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread, but I did want to answer your question. The wall of text above suggests I'm still quite salty about the experience. :)

@Travis B
I agree that is unacceptable. I can understand your distaste. We won't stay at the Poly after getting stuck with construction. Disney did refund some of our money, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I am sorry that happened to you. I don't think very many hotels handle construction well. It's good to let people know. They may still be doing construction when the OP arrives, and this could give her a heads up about it and possibly avoiding it. I know they were remodeling when we were there in March, but it wasn't near us. I don't know when it will be finished

Yikes @Travis B - that's quite an experience! We are currently booked at RPR but I was going to switch to HRH upon a recommendation from a friend and then also the construction, so this makes me lean that way even more. Club level for my dates is $408/night for HRH, which is steep. Hoping a discount will come out? But I definitely agree that I wouldn't want to spend $300+/night for an experience like that.

I think it is a relatively low crowds time that we're going - I'm getting the sense that 2 days might be enough in low season if we have express pass and get there right at opening, but that 3 would be better if it were high season or if we wanted to spend a bit of time poolside....

You might look for a Cheap Tickets/Orbitz discount code.

I did one day at USO and that wasn't enough. I'd do a 5/3 split. One day for Island of Adventure, one day for the other park, and the third day to flex in and out. I didn't get nearly enough done my first trip and that was before the Diagon Alley expansion and the Simpsons Land implementation.

Truthfully you don't need to decide now. Get the two day ticket and upgrade if you want the extra day. It's $10 more (and there are often 3rd day free deals). At that time of year I'd think 2 days is sufficient but if you want to re-ride a lot of things or see lots of the shows, you might want an extra day. I've usually done 1 day in both parks (had several old unexpiring tickets that let me do that for a lot of trips) and I saw probably 75% of what I would have wanted to do in both parks in 1 day (including re-riding most coasters and HP rides several times).

Undercover tourist has the buy 2 get the 3rd day free ticket right now. So - I'd get the three days either way.
