Disney & Universal or Just Disney?

We've been to both parks and enjoy them both, but what they offer is very different. With your kids ages I would stick to Disney and plan to do Universal when they're older and tall enough to ride everything.

If you do decide to do a split stay and are going to stay in one of their on-site deluxe hotels (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock or Royal Pacific) do Universal at the end of your trip. The first trip that we did a split stay and did Universal first my children were spoiled with the express pass. They really hated standing in line at Disney (and we went when the lines weren't bad, less than 15-20 min).

Has anyone ever stayed off Disney to go to both?

I have stayed off property and gone to both (Holiday Inn on US 192 across from Old Town). Did 3 Disney days & 2 Universal days. Didn't return to the room on Universal days, got there for 9am park opening & ate dinner in Citywalk. One of the cheaper ways to do it.

I am thinking we will do Universal in a couple years. DD (7.5) is just barely 48". She likes big rides... but only so big - she did ToT last time, but doesn't really want to do it again. She didn't want to go on the bigger coasters at our local amusement park. She LOVES Harry Potter though. So my preliminary plan is to go in a couple year, paired with KSC/Cocoa Beach/maybe a cruise. Someday...
