Hi, we are going to POR in June. We purchased a package directly through Disney, and also purchased the Travel Guard insurance. We are to drive from PA to FL for a 6 night stay.

Found out yesterday my grandmother has cancer. We're not sure if this will impact our trip. We are devastated, but we don't have all of the diagnosis yet.

Will this be covered under trip interruption? No one would really give me a clear answer at Disney or at TravelGuard.

Thanks for anyone that may have some knowledge or insight about this.

So sorry to hear about your grandmother. We have purchased TravelGuard through WDW many times. Have used for Hurricanes only. This is a pdf copy of the policy from last Summer. Not sure if it includes trip interruption for extended family. Hope all works out.

So sorry to hear...hope everything works out well. You can also check with the credit card company used, as they sometimes include travel insurance. I would think that travel insurance would certainly only cover the people on the itinerary. Good luck.

I am surprised that Disney didn't offer to postpone your trip for a later date. I would think that they would at least do some sort of credit system for you to come at a later date.

They are likely being ambiguous as you don't have a specific claim yet. Once you know the specifics, you can ask detailed questions and get pointed answers (they don't want to lock themselves into generalities that can be used against them in court).

However on TravelGuard's website is a link for "10 Reasons to Purchse". One of them says:

If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you must cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?

This is most like your situation, so if you purchased the right insurance, you would likely be covered and receive a refund if you need to cancel. It depends on the policy you purchased and whether this would count as a pre-existing condition.

thank you all for the posts. we used disney gift cards to book our vaca. i seem to think we would be ok, not sure if we want to cancel just yet, just a lot of things going on in the past few days. please keep us in your prayers. thanks again sorry for the quick note and lack of capitalization

I would not cancel until you have more info. Many people with cancer are cured or live for many years. My mom lived for 9 1/2 years after a grim diagnosis. Thoughts & prayers to you.
