Hello All,
Me wife, brother in law and sister, are all planning to go to WDW September 2010,
we stayed offiste in feb 09 and had a hire car for 2 weeks, no problem getting round etc,
we were contemplating staying at a WDW hotel and using disney transportation, buses/monorail etc etc
If we was to do this, how would we venture out to Universal and Seaworld parks? Would have to hire a car or is there a bus etc????
Please advise best you can
thanks as always:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

I do believe there is a Mears bus that can pick you up and the cost is around $15.00 person. I am not 100% sure on the details. I know someone on the board can help you.

We did this in Feb. I don't remember the exact price but all you need to do is call them 24 hours before you're looking to go and they'll set it up.

Have you considered splitting your trip in two? I found this to be the more cost effective way when we honeymooned there in 2006. We stayed on-site for our Disney days, then moved off-site for our Universal days. We saved a lot by not keeping a rental car the days we wouldn't be needing it.

This is what we are doing - thinking of staying at universal proerpty for the Fast pass that is tied to your hotel key

I agree with the others, if you can consider staying onsite for the Disney portion of your stay and then elsewhere for the rest. The Loews hotels at Universal are great places to stay and you do get front of the line privileges. There are also hotels close to Sea World if you want to be close to the Sea World park.

mears shuttle should be about $17 per person.

a cab will run about $50-$70 roundtrip

I go to Universal on every WDW trip. I don't bother changing accommodations; I simply drive up to Universal, which takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

I always hire a car for the duration of my stay when I go to Orlando. However, you can also hire a car for only a portion of your stay if you like; there are several places in and around WDW to hire cars. The most convenient is the Disney Car Care Center, located in the Magic Kingdom area just outside the MK car park.

At the CCC, you can rent from Alamo or National, two of the better national chains in the US. If you hire a car from there, they will send a shuttle bus to your resort to pick you up when it's time to get your car, but you have to call ahead and arrange it. This service is free.

You also have the option of using a taxi for each of your trips off-site, but taxi fares and tips can add up quickly, and if you do 2 trips to Universal and one to SeaWorld, you may find that the fares have cost you more than hiring a car for a few days.

As I said, I prefer to hire a car for my entire stay, not only for my off-site excursions, but for the convenience and massive time savings I get from self-driving. I also enjoy going off-site for shoppipng and dining, and for film processing in the pre-digital days. If you don't travel with a laptop, it's a good idea to go off-site to have your pics burned to CD at Walgreens, rather than payng the extortionist prices at WDW.

I know there is a direct Lynx bus (http://www.golynx.com/) from Disney to Sea World. You can also take the bus to Universal, but you do need to switch buses somwhere. I cannot vouch for the Lynx service as I have never used them, maybe someone on the board has experience with them.

If you do half and half, I'd recommend doing the first half in Universal and the second half in WDW.

Whenever I visit the two on the same day I feel like something's missing at Universal. If you visit those parks first then you won't get that feeling...it will build up to disney instead of (in my case) build down to Universal.

I also stay elsewhere for my Universal visit.

For me, I don't want to be paying to stay on-site at Disney and go elsewhere. I just do not feel like I am getting my money's worth if I do that.

I can do what I want to at both Universal parks in a day, so I usually go into Orlando a couple of days before Disney and stay off site somewhere, do Universal one day, and just hang around another day.

True, a car or taxi would be less than a hotel, but it's the thought of paying for Disney and not being there that just doesn't sit with me well.

This is true, unless you're a DVC member. If you are a DVC member then you've already paid for the points.
