How do you all feel about this Disney buying Marvel... Mickey along side the X-Men... I am not sure how I feel about it yet.

well I hope we don't see these Marvel characters at any of the parks in WDW.
Can you imagine the Hulk and Tinkerbell side by side at a parade ?

Of course, the Marvel dudes would make for a fun character meal; maybe if they did that at one of the hotels I guess I could live with that.

I love Marvel (& comics in general) and I'm not too worried about Disney overintegrating the brand with its own classic lineup as Disney already owns a lot of diverse media, but I am very curious about what this will mean for Universal.

Yes I wonder if Universal will have to change IOA to remove Marvel land... My guess would be the Marvel characters would fit best at DHS, I would hate to see them in the MK parade next to Mickey Minne and the Princeses.

I'm sure they have some licensing contract that'll allow them to keep the theming for now, but who knows when that agreement is up or what other weird consequences pop up when Universal is featuring Disney owned franchises in their parks.

Great point, I guess we will all just have to wait and see. :goodvibes

That's true but I can't see Universal paying Disney a licensing fee for too long. I think a definately rethemeing of Marvel Super Hero Island will be in the works at some point. Believe it or not...Disney and Universal DO work together but I just have a feeling in my gut that we may see a different theme someday...not sure when though.

a little piece about the parks, from the story.

When CNBC asked about theme park plans, Iger added: "Marvel characters have already proved strong when it comes to theme park attraction. We believe there are a lot of opportunities around the world. Not in every one of our parks, because there are existing agreements that we obviously have to honor, but in a number of places for us to use the Marvel characters to basically help us grow our theme park business and better entertain people."

Trust me - Disney will suck the financial blood out of US to continue to run these rides.

Disney is all about sucking the $$$ blood out of people. Ask staff who are suffering through massive layoffs January - March .....especially after "Fellow Castmember Bob" took a $38 million bonus a skant few weeks earlier.

It's all about $$$ at the expense of everything else. Yes, they are no different than any other big business....but don't kid yourselves....if Disney could make $$$ from it, they would snatch the baby bottle out of your son's mouth.

No matter what kind of negative spin you put on it, Disney just hit paydirt by purchasing Marvel and cornering the market on males ages 13 to 30. After 3-5 years, when the various contracts with other studios run out, Disney will take over the brand completely and having spent $4 billion will look like the deal, er, steal of the century.

Disney knows when to spend money and when to save it for more worthy prospects. They took a bath on go.com, Ovitz and DCA, but they incorporated the first in an innovative way, got rid of the second, and they're fixing the third quite nicely. Likewise, some CMs hold a position that is tripled and quadrupled with employees, and are therefore subject to layoffs. Others have non-essential jobs that don't deserve medical insurance. Personally, I'd hate to be married to anyone who had either threat hanging over their head, but that's just me. Disney must be doing something right -- they just keep growing and growing and growing... :)

Contract was written so US maintains rghts to the specific Marvel rides (spiderman, etc). UNLESS they shut down the ride. Now they can shut it down for maintenance but if they close/shutter the ride for any reason.....they cannot bring it back later without paying "Uncle Walt" lots of $$$.

That little contract tidbit did not surprise me at all.

Happily, after 31 years, my DH is a comfortable/essential employee of Uncle Walt's little business. That doesn't mean, however, that we do not feel horrible for anyone who is laid off or loose their medical benefits.

There is no question that Disney will continue to make $$$ and continue to abuse their castmembers doing it (and find cost-cutting in Resorts and Parks which will trouble those of us who truly LOVE Disney). It's how big business remains big now a-days.

I was lucky enough to be standing in line at BTMRR 4 1/2 years ago to meet the gentleman who became my husband. He and I will continue to be a champion for anyone who needs help and support.

Not everyone working for "Fellow Castmember Bob" is as heartless as their leaders are. Most of us actually care for our co-workers and Disney guests and want the best for everyone.

The deal with US rans a tad longer than 3-5 years. Look it up

Oh, I'm sure you're right. No real jobs were eliminated, just redundancies

Others have non-essential jobs that don't deserve medical insurance.

Where is your compassion, your humanity? We all saw and heard a lot of similar mindless buffoonery at town hall meetings across the country recently

I did look it up, and I am right, thank you. The other point I made, which you carefully omitted, was that as soon as the deal gets finalized, Disney will start collecting revenue from Universal. Twist the truth any way you want. Universal just got pwned.

Oh, I'm sure you're right. No real jobs were eliminated, just redundancies

Once again, I am right, and most of those jobs were suggested layoffs that many of the employees accepted with generous terms and packages. Look it up. ;)

I agree, and most of that mindless rhetoric came from our current leader who is digging a deeper grave (see $9 trillion deficit) for this country. People wanted change and they got it, but nobody said it would be change for the better.

Disney FTW!!!

I am old school. Keep the old and Disney. Get rid of the new. I am showing my age now. The problem with this picture is that no progress would happend. The Disney parks would die. It is up to me to accept the changes I cannot change. Sometimes changes are good. :confused3

*Prays to God that this is just a bad, mixed up nightmare.* :scared1:
