Disney-themed basement

For the last 7 years, our basement has been decorated in the Scattered Mickey pattern. We've updated various pieces through the years but the colors have remained the same. We had coordinating bedding, bathroom accessories and even the dishes in the wetbar are Scattered Mickey. We also had lithographs from various Disney movies hung on the walls, along with some special prints we picked up while at the parks. Our walls were yellow on the bottom, red on the top with a bright white trim. We had a black leather sofa/loveseat/chair set which we accented with Mickey ears and hands throw pillows.

Well, thanks to a pipe bursting on the main level and flooding two floors of our home, we will be redecorating. I'd like to keep the same theme, especially since we already have all of the decor, but I'm not sure I want to use the same colors on the wall. We're thinking of letting DS 15 move into the basement bedroom, and he hangs out in the rec room a lot with his friends so we don't want him to be embarrassed by the "Disney basement". On the other hand, our 3 year old and 1 year old twins loved the bright colors on the walls.

I'm looking for suggestions on what to do with the walls - I don't really want plain white, and I'd like to put the lithographs back on the walls, minus the ones that we damaged. Thanks in advance!

You might want to take a look at some of the Disney Hotels, particularly the Disneyland Hotel in California. They are able to keep it Disney without being over the top Disney.

Without knowing what colors you have in the room, I can't give the best advice on color. I will say that if you're unsure, you could keep the walls a neutral color (not necessarily white) and use bright accent colors to add a pop to the room. Take a look at the Mickey Mouse Penthouse Suite at the Disneyland Hotel.

Could do red or black walls, with highlights , so it wouldn't seem dark?

You could do all yellow walls and then use the same prints etc... without the red maybe it wouldn't seem as Disneyish.

You basically described our basement room, only we have yellow on top and red on the bottom with a Mickey wallpaper border in the middle. We have all black furniture in the room as well. It's my favorite room in the house!

Our basement has a not too over the top Disney theme. We have pennants and lithographs on the wall, a few Disney toss pillows in the chairs, and a bookcase with WDW pictures and books. The walls are a bright blue, which is how they were when we bought the house. I wouldn't want the color upstairs, but it works for the basement.

Grey is a very 'in' color in wall paint, and Is a neutral.

One thing I did around my house was to add hidden Mickeys in the paint. I used regular paint on the wall, then got high gloss enamel and used a Mickey template to get the shape. The enamel doesn't change the color of the paint, but if you look at it from the right angle, you can see a glossy Mickey.

I love this idea.

We just remodeled our basement with a disney theme! I painted the walls a light grey and the bottom 1/2 I did a diamond pattern in black. I had my husband build the wall out at 4 ft high and install a shelf for my treasures. I painted that red. I do think I went over the top with our pictures and such but I love it!!!! If I can figure out how to post pictures I will !

The entire basement has to be gutted (part of the ceiling collapsed and what didn't collapse had to be pulled down) so we'll be starting over with new wetbar cabinetry, carpet, furniture...etc. I have a blank slate to start over. DH and I were talking about it last night - we thought about maybe solid red with some type of Mickey border. I think I remember seeing something with Mickey Mouse and some ribbons of black film behind him or something - I need to look around and see what's available. Although I like the idea of gray paint since it's a bit more neutral and the hidden Mickey idea is really neat too! If I can figure out how to post a picture of how the basement used to look I will.

This isn't exactly the route you're going, but our basement playroom is a Disney Pirate/Neverland theme.

The top half of the wall is a sandy beige color, & the bottom is a sage-y green. We have a non-themed pirate border (pirate ships, treasure maps, treasure trunks, etc.) that hangs in between.

Among other stuff, we have the Disney PotC ride print along w/ the metal jail keys & a PotC lamp. We also have a Peter Pan ("Off to Neverland") print & a Tinkerbell quote on the wall. I mod-podged some PotC & Peter Pan book pages onto 2 different wood slabs for some additional "wall art".

On the wall going down the stairs into the room, we have some other Disney prints.

It works well w/ our 2 older children plus w/ our younger DS.

Grey is what I painted our Disney bathroom. Lots of black, red, yellow, white in the towels, shower curtain and accessories. But the room could easily be transformed into a spa type retreat room (like for reselling) if need be.

Our basement is actually themed to our college colors (purple and gold). But most people don't really pick up on it, because the gold is actually a pale autumn wheat color, and very neutral. We do have a small accent wall, that is very royal purple.

So that's the way I think, "what color would work well with the bright themed colors, but isn't bright and themed itself?"

We did this in the girls' bathroom and LOVE it!
