Disney Sweethearts Doll collection from the 90's

Back when American Girl dolls were popular Disney Stores released a series of dolls named Disney Sweethearts and they were cute. The dolls consisted of Mindy a blonde doll and Penny who was a brunette doll or blonde doll and they were the size of American Girl dolls and came with a Disney inspired outfit and a pin. There were many types of fashions for the Disney Sweethearts dolls ranging from vacation wear to Disney Princess costumes that could also fit American Girl dolls. There was gonna be two new dolls added to the Disney Sweethearts line but were never released. Was Disney trying to copy American Girl dolls with these Disney Sweethearts Dolls as well as the Our Generation Dolls at Target?
