Last year I purchased Disney stocks through TD when they were at a low. I bought $1000 usd worth and they are now fluctuating around $1700-$1800 usd in value. But what I didn’t know is TD is charging me about $28 every 3 months. So it is costing me around $100/yr. I don’t know if I should be leaving them in with that or if I should be taking them out and moving them. I mainly just wanted to own Disney stock lol. But I don’t understand how they grow over the years and if I should leave them. Where does everyone have theirs, and could someone maybe explain if there is another way they grow other than just the current market value? I worked in finance so I have a pretty good grasp on most aspects. I just find this information difficult to find and I didn’t work in stocks. Thanks!

TD Direct Investing, if you don't have a minimum balance in your household ($15K? $25K?) or make a minimum amount of trades per quarter (I think it's 3?), they charge you a fee. I think it's $25, but maybe then it's $25+HST.

There's ways to eliminate it. Other than by simply being an active investor or increasing your balance, you can do what I do which is have a $100 monthly contribution to my TDDI account. There's no fee as long as you have an auto-contribution setup. (Has to be set up that way, not simply manually contributing $100/mo).

If you want "free" brokerage options though there is a lot of competition these days. From QuestTrade down to the "free trade" companies like WealthSimple.

I believe that they will also waive the fee if you have a registered account open with them (e.g., RRSP, TFSA, etc.)

I use Wealth Simple and tried to buy as it looked to be an available stock just recently but it is not eligible for settlement via CDS currently. I dont know if QuestTrade's would be an option though.

I did consider wealth simple as well. I will need to contact TD to see what options there are to make the account free. I am a mature student in university, so I may not be able to put much into the investing account monthly. But I could open a TFSA cause I do have savings. My husband also works for TD Insurance so I don’t know if there is an employee rate. I used to as well years ago, but I cannot recall if there is or not.
Thank you for the responses!

Not going to lie some months I've pulled $100 out the day after it goes in! Doesn't count against you as long as the monthly deposit's been made.

Even in a TFSA you don't really "lose" the contribution room by withdrawing since it gets added back the next year, so in my case, maybe yours, it just saves the activity fee with no downside.

I use Questrade and there is just a flat fee for every transaction, and that is it. Minimum $1000 account balance. And Disney is definitely available there. I know because I keep looking at it thinking how stupid I was for NOT buying any stocks back in April 2020. LOL
