Disney Showcase announcements today!

Apparently there was a showcase at the Kodak theatre today where Disney officially announced the upcoming production of Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp...AND he came out on stage in full Pirate gear with a Lone Ranger mask. They did announce that he would play the Lone Ranger but made no official announcement for Pirates 4 but the costume said a lot!!!

You know, when I was a kid and Tim Burton did Pee Wee, Batman and Scissorhands, those were funky, freaky Tim Burton flicks that I totally appreciated. But this guy really needs to stop remaking other people's movies. That's all he does -- Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, now Alice and even Dark Shadows in 2010. C'mon, man. Get back to Ed Wood and Big Fish. Be original.

I don't know what bothers me more -- reading that they will pull a Lucas and Spielberg on Pirates 4, a la Indy IV (just let it die already) or that other link on the site that says Will Smith may be cast as Captain America. Somebody pulled the fire alarm in Hollywood, because no one is working at their desk!

And the Lone Ranger? Really? Here's a little known factoid: That stunt in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indy goes under the truck and comes out the other end? That exact same stunt was performed in The Legend of the Lone Ranger, 1981. The stunt was even done by the same stuntman though with less successful results, which is why the makers of ROTLA "borrowed" it for their movie which was released only a few months later. Little bit of trivia for you.

I'm really looking forward to seeing "Alice" - isn't this the one that is supposed to be based on the twisted American McGee Alice video game? It's going to be interesting to see what Burton and Depp can do with it!

As for Lone Ranger, it's hard for me to imagine Depp playing that role, but he is such a chameleon that I'm sure he'll do a good job.

I am looking forward to both "Alice in Wonderland" and "Lone Ranger". I think Johnny Depp is one of the best actors around today and can't wait to see his performance as the characters in those movies. I am also looking forward to "TRON 2", it has been years since I have seen the original, but I'm sure I have time to re watch it before the new one is released.
