1) I agree, the actual bag check is pretty useless. It's just the first part of the "show".
2) There are many, many security measures you will never know about or see (thankfully). The parks are self-contained - they are as safe as you could possibly be in public (and private, unless you lock yourself in a bunker).
3) This really isn't a rag on the OP, but she seems to have spent WAY too much time thinking about this - I know the media and government want to scare you with all the "terror, terror!" warnings (the "color coded threat level" is nothing but a mass hysteria building device), but you really need to step back and think about the big picture. You have much more of a chance of getting struck by lightning then you do being a victim of a terrorist attack on US soil. We all know the possibilities - but there comes a point when you just have to realize that the chances of it happening to you are infinitely small.
