Are the salads any good?? LOL- I wouldn't know- I've NEVER gotten one, but I want to try to lose some weight this summer- Disney's not a good start, eating out every night- I was hoping for something filling AND tastey!! Any suggestions, fellow weight-watchers??

As you can see my my signature, we've done a good bit of healthy eating at WDW, while trying to lose our combined 160 pounds. What it involved was austerity and determination.

Salads, however, and especially entree salads, are notoriously poor ways of trying to lose weight. For example, McDonald's Crispy Bacon Ranch Salad has more fat and calories and just as much cholesterol as a Big Mac. As a matter of fact, all of the salads at McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's or Taco Bell fail at least three of five standard health metrics, and all except two (both at Wendy's) fail at least four of five metrics. The salads on the menus at WDW are wonderful meals. However, as typically prepared, they are unlikely to be healthy choices, just as the salads at the fast-food restaurants mentioned above aren't healthy choices.

Our favorite salad at WDW is the Hollywood Brown Derby's Cobb Salad. However, the original recipe had about 630 calories and 44 grams of fat, and we know everything has been "super-sized" since then!

While we were losing weight (it took nearly 18 months), we focused on seafood. HMR taught us that most white fish has about 25% of the calories of the same amount of beef; about 50% of the calories of the same amount of chicken. However, we had to be vigilant to get the chefs to prepare the fish dry, instead of drowning it in oil, and of course, we never ate fried fish. (Even the "good" oil has lots and lots of calories.) Oven-fried or battered and backed are just about as bad. HMR's rule of thumb is that any of these standard preparation methods for fish end up multiplying the calories by a factor of four.

We also would eat vegetarian meals. Vegetables have even fewer calories than fish (though most of the vegetarian choices typically available at restaurants have very little protein, which is an essential nutrient to prepare your body for weight-loss maintenance, so just going veggie isn't a panecea). With pure veggie dishes, we were a bit more laid back about the amount of oil, but still wouldn't accept anything with too much oil. This meant that the standard vegetarian dishes on the menu were not acceptable. We had to negotiate something special with the chef in each case. (Spoodles was especially accommodating.)

Counter-service restaurants were generally off-limits. What I think is interesting is that one of my mainstays of the few counter-service meals we did eat while we were losing weight -- baked potato with mustard (I thought of the baked potato as an oddly shaped knish!) -- doesn't seem to be as available any more. A quick Google search of the menus on Deb Wills' website didn't yield any counter-service restaurants still serving them. :(

I'm sure there are other alternatives now. There is a lot more fruit available now.

I suspect we could start a thread on the W.I.S.H. Board that'll yield up a lot of great options. Sorry to say, though, that the idea of trying to eat healthy be just eating salads is not going to be a constructive approach.

I don't know if you an order this as a meal but when we went to the castle for dinner we got a salad with our meal. Now i am one who orders vinegar an oil when i eat salad but decided when in disney.....it was delicious!!!! :rolleyes1 I even wrote disney to ask for the dressing reciepe!!! It was honey shaollot dressing. I wanted to lick the plate!!!!! :p

The caesar salad is good, but the dressing is VERY STRONG. So partway through I usually get a bit tired of it. So remember that - very strong caesar dressing! CS salads are just okay, nothing too great, but not bad. CRT has a yummy BLT salad now that I think is better than the BD Cobb! But that's just my opinion.

the one way i've found of cutting calories when eating salad is to ask for the dressing on the side... it's an old ww trick to dip your fork in the dressing then stab the salad... you use significantly less dressing than if you poured it on or stabbed the salad first then dipped in dressing... and you don't lose any flavor!

another "healthy" approach to eating is remove half the bread from any sandwich, preferably the half w/the mayo/sauce on it... you can save hundreds of calories that way and not feel even remotely "deprived!" also, substituting an extra veggie for the rice or potato is helpful...

last but not least, share meals... esp the biggies w/appys, desserts, etc... and drink water, seltzer or diet soda rather than sugary soda or juice...

good luck! :flower:

Yes, sharing meals was a life saver for my waistline. As far as the salads, well, I found that it's mostly iceberg lettuce with stuff on it. Bleh.

Every time I've asked @ counter serves (think ceasar salad); i've been told they're pre-mixed w/dressing & they can't offer it "on the side".

Since the lines are always long, don't want to make a fuss but, has anyone had any success?

Caesar salad is often pre-made (because a lot of people like how the dressing wilts the salad). With most any other salad you would more options.

I have found that the side salads you get at counter services places are just ok. They are in a plastic bowl and you get a packet of dressing. Good, usually nice and cold, but nothing to write home about. I had a pretty good Caesar salad at Mama Melroses and Le Cellier, and also at Alfredos. The one at 50s Prime Time was with chicken and that was good also.

eew! wilted salad:bitelip: must be a regional preference? IMO, WDW's is just swimming in dressing, can't imagine the calorie/fat count. Thanks - will check out the other varieties. Not too keen on the "chef salads" with all the salty/fatty luncheon meat thrown in either. Whatever happend to a nice lo-cal salad or raw veg. & dip?

After a week in WDW I'm so sick of chicken fingers & fries....they're everywhere.

I love the salad at Flame Tree BBQ and it is healthy. They also have similar salads at the Mara at AKL that are fantastic.

The one at Flame Tree is simply mixed greens and veggies, grilled chicken and a viniagrette dressing. Its SO good!

I always get a side of cheese fries with it so I'm sure that counteracts the healthiness of the salad :rotfl2:

Cobb Salad at Brown Derby...all the way :thumbsup2

I think the calorie monster there are the blue cheese and bacon. Maybe you can get it on the side.

There's also the dressing; lots of hidden calories there. Also, avocado, while not as much of a killer as blue cheese, is still pretty high in calories.

I liked the salad at the Plaza Restaurant in MK. It had strawberries on it and a vinegarette, maybe some walnuts or pecans too. I've also gotten Ceasar Salad at the CS restaurants with the dressing on the side, along with grilled chicken. I thought it was pretty good for the price and location. The veggie chili at Columbia Harbor House is a nice choice for a WW dish-- lots of fiber and veggies, obviously.

I like:
the Colony Salad at LTT, with the dressing on the side and
the Beef Tenderloin salad on the Lunch menu @ Le Cellier, dressing on the side and
the fruit plate @ Flame Tree BBQ.

The best way that DH and I save calories is to share CS meals. One meal is always enough to share. With a family of 5, we usually order 3 meals and have plenty for everyone.

We really enjoy the chicken salad at Columbia Harbor House. It is mixed greens with chicken chunks, feta, pineapple and pecans. Sounds like an odd combination, but it is delicious and big enough to share!

We also carry small Brita sippy-type bottles that have a filter built in. We fill them with ice from the CS places (they will give you a free cup of ice if you ask). We then add water from the bubblers and they stay cold for a few hours. We save $$ and calories from soda or lemonade and have a drink even if waiting in line. We have never been denied entrance to an attraction while carrying one on a shoulder strap.

I think the secret to a tasty low cal salad is balsamic vinegar (no oil) rather than proper dressing.... I don't think it is easy to get hold of baslamic vinegar at disney though

has a GREAT oriental salad. We LOVE that place (and the price). :cool1:

YES! Earl of Sandwich is awesome. The Original Roast Beef and all american turkey sandwich is THE BEST !! DH liked it so much he wanted to be a franchisee ! :rotfl2:
