I have a son with Down Syndrome and we are going on a 10 trip to Disney on Oct. 28. On an email list I belong to for parents of multiplies with Down Syndrome(my Down's son is one of triplets), a mom said she had just gone to Disney. She said they got a "Disney Red Card" from guest services and it allowed them to not wait in lines for rides. I have searched around and I can not find anything about this card. So I thought if it exists, the DIS would know about it! So does anyone have information on it or has used it? What are the criteria to get one?

You are looking for the Guest Assistance Card GAC. On the disABLITIES FAQs thread the 6th entry explains the GAC. It does a very good job of explaining what it is and isn't. If you have specific questions please ask there is always someone here with great info,

::yes::
just echoing what Nanajo wrote.

I also wanted to add that the card is not intended or allowed to let someone bypass the lines. The only card that allows front of the line access is exclusively for children on a "Wish" trip. Otherwise you will need to let the CM know what your needs are. If it's a stamina issue, they will advise that you rent a wheelchair. If it's a child who tires easily you might want to think about having one. ---Kathy

Thanks for the info. I am not sure if we will get one or not. I think he will be ok in the lines if he can sit down on the ground or my husband can hold him. But we will see how our first day goes and decide after that.

You can also think of the GAC as "insurance". If you get one, it will be immediately available if there is need for it. If there is no need, you can just keep it in a purse.

I would agree that it's a good idea to get one "just in case". Is your child small? If so and he can use a stroller you can ask that you be able to bring it in the queue lines. As the lines are usually moving he'd be unable to sit on the ground to rest and I'd worry about someone bumping into him. ---Kathy

My son also has Down Syndrome and wants to sit everywhere. If he is young enough I would also suggest you request a GAC to be able to use your stroller as a wheelchair. I wish I had known that back in the day. It would have made it so much easier to just move him through the lines like that, and he would have been much happier as well.
